    Community-Based Assessment of People with Chronic Diseases and Conditions Worsening the Severity of COVID-19 in Addis Ababa City Administration

    AbstractBackground: the COVID-19 pandemic stayed in a sporadic form for a long time after introducing the coronavirus in the country, later appearing in clusters within communities. During such sporadic and clustered spread of the disease, the government of Ethiopia started identifying suspects through active surveillance for COVID-19. This study aimed to describe people who have chronic illnesses that could be underlying conditions for increased severity of COVID-19.Methods: A survey was conducted in May 2020 using active community-based case surveillance in 30 randomlyselected woredas in Addis Ababa City. Data were collected from each household member by assessing for general conditions and diseases expected to increase their risk of suffering higher severity from COVID-19. Data were stored in M.S. Excel and analyzed using SPSS-version 26 for windows. Descriptive analysis was conducted to know the proportion of persons with chronic diseases, and thus the population with a higher risk of suffering more severity from COVID-19 by place, person, and time. The results are presented using tables and graphs as appropriate.Results: The point prevalence of flu-like syndrome was 51.9 per 100,000 persons, and the prevalence was higher among older people. The study showed that 11,600 per 100,000 households have at least a member with chronic diseases that worsen the severity of COVID-19 morbidity. The survey also found 6,939 and 5,140 households per 100,000 households have diabetes mellitus and hypertension, respectively, and about 1950 per 100,000 households were with bronchial asthma. Nearly a quarter of the households have people with two or more chronic diseases that worsen their risk of facing a more severe course of COVID-19 than it would be for people without those underlying conditions.Discussion: High proportion of households have people with chronic diseases that worsen their risk of suffering a more severe course of COVID-19 than it would be for people without those underlying conditions. The Ministry of Health should devise and implement mechanisms to safeguard people with chronic diseases from contracting the diseases. [Ethiop. J.     A survey of knowledge and attitudes relating to cervical and breast cancer among women in Ethiopia

    Background Breast cancer and cervical cancer are the two leading cancers among women in Ethiopia. This study investigated knowledge and attitudes related to these two types of cancer among women in 4 zones of Ethiopia. This is the first study employing a validated questionnaire to investigate knowledge and attitudes relating to breast and cervical cancer in Ethiopia. Methods A community based cross-sectional study was conducted from September to November 2015 in the North Shewa zone (Amhara region), Gamo Gofa zone (Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ region) and zones 1 and 3 (Afar region) of Ethiopia. A total of 799 women aged 18 years and older participated in the survey. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the association of possible predictors with breast and cervical cancer knowledge. Results A total of 799 women aged 18 years and older participated in the survey. Of the women interviewed, 63.0% had heard of breast cancer and 42.2% had heard of cervical cancer. Among those who had heard of breast cancer, 21.3% (107/503) had heard of breast cancer screening and 1.4% of women aged 40 years and older had undergone at least one breast screening examination. Fewer than half of the participants provided the correct response to questions related to risk factors for breast and cervical cancer. Among those who had heard of cervical cancer, 41.5% (140/337) had heard of cervical cancer screening and 3.3% had undergone at least one cervical cancer screening examination. Women with primary and higher levels of education were more likely to have heard of breast cancers (OR = 3.0; 95% CI: 2.1–4.2; p < 0.001) and cervical cancer (OR = 1.9; 95% CI: 1.4–2.6; p < 0.001). From the overall attitude score, the majority of the women were found to have negative attitudes towards breast cancer (67.4%) and cervical cancer (70.6%). Conclusions This study found that the overall knowledge of risk factors for breast cancer and cervical cancer among women was low. Lack of cancer awareness, and lack of education in general, are the most potent barriers to access and care, and should be addressed through multi-faceted strategies including peer-education, mass media and other community-based interventions

    Detection of infectious bronchitis virus 793B, avian metapneumovirus, Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Mycoplasma synoviae in poultry in Ethiopia

    A survey was conducted into respiratory infectious diseases of poultry on a chicken breeder farm run by the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR), located in Debre Zeit, Ethiopia. Oropharyngeal swabs were collected from 117 randomly selected birds, and blood was taken from a subset of 73 of these birds. A combination of serological and molecular methods was used for detection of pathogens. For the first time in Ethiopia, we report the detection of variant infectious bronchitis virus (793B genotype), avian metapneumovirus subtype B and Mycoplasma synoviae in poultry. Mycoplasma gallisepticum was also found to be present; however, infectious laryngotracheitis virus was not detected by PCR. Newcastle disease virus (NDV) was not detected by PCR, but variable levels of anti-NDV HI antibody titres shows possible exposure to virulent strains or poor vaccine take, or both. For the burgeoning-intensive industry in Ethiopia, this study highlights several circulating infectious respiratory pathogens that can impact on poultry welfare and productivity
