    Predicting frictional losses generated by piston connecting-rod big end journal bearing for an internal combustion engine

    The aim of the study is to investigate the tribological behaviour of the connecting-rod big end journal bearing under dynamic loading for a full engine cycle.In this study, a numerical analysis is used for solving the 2-D Reynolds equation based on Reynolds boundary condition. The 2-D Reynolds solution was derived by using a combination of approaches, namely finite difference method, Newton-Raphson method, and Taylor expansion series. Then, the formulated 2-D mathematical model is used to ascertain the tribological behaviour for both rigid and deformable bearing assumptions.For low loading conditions, the simulation results from both rigid and deformation models have only shown minor differences, demonstrating correlation with existing analytical and experimental results. However, once the loading capacity is increased, the simulation results from the deformation model assumption is shown to be much closer to the experimental results obtained from real engine analysis.In short, an elastic journal bearing assumption in simulating such tribological conjunction is believed to be more practical and reliable for real engine practices as compared to a rigid journal bearing assumption

    BackgroundMajor depressive disorder (MDD) is an independent risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD), and influences the occurrence and prognosis of cardiovascular events. Although there is evidence that antidepressants may be cardioprotective after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) comorbid with MDD, the operative pathophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. Our aim was therefore to explore the molecular mechanisms of escitalopram on myocardial apoptosis and the expression of Bax and Bcl-2 in a rat model of depression during myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R).MethodsRats were divided randomly into 3 groups (n = 8): D group (depression), DI/R group (depression with myocardial I/R) and escitalopram + DI/R group. The rats in all three groups underwent the same chronic mild stress and separation for 21 days, at the same time, in the escitalopram + DI/R group, rats were administered escitalopram by gavage (10 mg/kg/day). Ligation of the rat¿s left anterior descending branch was done in the myocardial I/R model. Following which behavioral tests were done. The size of the myocardial infarction was detected using 1.5% TTC dye. The Tunel method was used to detect apoptotic myocardial cells, and both the Rt-PCR method and immunohistochemical techniques were used to detect the expression of Bcl¿2 and Bax.ResultsCompared with the D and DI/R groups, rats in Escitalopram + DI/R group showed significantly increased movements and sucrose consumption (P < .01). Compared with the DI/R group, the myocardial infarct size in the escitalopram + DI/R group was significantly decreased (P < .01). Compared with the D group, there were significantly increased apoptotic myocardial cells in the DI/R and escitalopram + DI/R groups (P < .01); however compared with the DI/R group, apoptotic myocardial cell numbers in the escitalopram + DI/R group were significantly decreased (P < .01). Compared with the DI/R group, there was a down-regulated Bax:Bcl-2 ratio in the escitalopram + DI/R group (P < .01).ConclusionsThese results suggest that in patients with AMI comorbid with MDD, there is an increase in pro-apoptotic pathways that is reversed by escitalopram. This suggests that clinically escitalopram may have a direct cardioprotective after acute myocardial infarction

    Three Dimensional Measurements of Asphaltene Deposition in a Transparent Micro-Channel

    This study describes a novel experimental approach to directly measure the thicknesses of asphaltene deposits in micro-channels. The thickness of the asphaltene deposit is estimated using a visualization technique based on 3D digital microscopy. The working fluid is a mixture of n-heptane and dead oil. Induced by the addition of n-heptane, the asphaltenes present in crude oil phase separate at ambient temperature to form aggregates of asphaltene-rich phase. Part of the asphaltene aggregates deposit on the walls of the transparent micro-channel. A two-dimensional profile of the deposit across the channel at selected axial sections is measured. The influences of injection mixture volume on the growth of the thickness of deposited asphaltenes is investigated using two experimental conditions, (i) varying elapsed time at constant flow rate and (ii) increasing the flow rate at a constant elapsed time. In both cases the deposit thickness of asphaltene (δ) increases with the total injection volume (V). The experimental results obtained in this work provide new insights into the deposition process at the micro-scale level, which can be used to facilitate the development of more accurate numerical model for this applicatio

    Off-policy Q-learning: set-point design for optimizing dual-rate rougher flotation operational processes

    Rougher flotation, composed of unit processes operating at a fast time scale and economic performance measurements known as operational indices measured at a slower time scale, is very basic and the first concentration stage for flotation plants. Optimizing operational process for rougher flotation circuits is extremely important due to high economic profit arising from the optimality of operational indices. This paper presents a novel off-policy Q-learning method to learn theoptimal solution to rougher flotation operational processes without the knowledge of dynamics of unit processes and operational indices. To this end, first, the optimal operational control (OOC) for dual-rate rougher flotationprocesses is formulated. Second, H∞ tracking control problem is developed to optimally prescribe the set-points for the rougher flotation processes. Then, a zero-sum game off-policy Q-learning algorithm is proposed to find theoptimal set-points by using measured data. Finally, simulation experiments are employed to show the effectiveness of the proposed method

    Modeling of Two-Phase Flow with Deposition in Vertical Pipes

    Deposition is found in many engineering processes, such as the asphaltene deposition in oil pipelines/wellbores, and biological and chemical foulings in pipes or heat exchangers. These deposition processes usually occur in a two-phase flow environment. This study develops a model for two-phase flow with deposition in vertical pipes. The model consists of three modules: Fluid Transport, Particle Transport, and Particle Deposition. The Fluid Transport module predicts the fluids’ velocities and pressure. The Particle Transport module calculates the particle distribution. The Particle Deposition module models the actual attachment of particles onto the wall. The model is verified against a few limiting cases with analytical solutions. Then, it is validated against experimental data for two-phase flow without deposition.     Prevalence of Campylobacter spp. in retailed ready-to-eat sushi

    The prevalence of Campylobacter spp. in retailed sushi were examined using the techniques of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in combination with most probable number (MPN) to quantify the bacteria in 150 samples obtained from three supermarkets. The average prevalence of Campylobacter spp. in retailed sushi was 26.6% with 32%, 16% and 32% from supermarket I, II and III, respectively. Campylobacter jejuni was found to be the predominant species in retailed sushi with 82.49% of all Campylobacter spp. positive samples. Campylobacter coli was not detected in all samples. The maximum MPN number of Campylobacter spp. in retailed sushi purchased from supermarket I, II and III ranged from 3.6-11.0 MPN/g, 9.4->1100 MPN/g and 27-1100 MPN/g, respectively. The isolation of C. jejuni from a variety of ready-to-eat retail sushi may indicate that these products can act as possible vehicles for the dissemination of food-borne campylobacteriosis
