Achieving Both Ultrahigh Electrical Conductivity and Mechanical Modulus of Carbon Films: Templating-Coalescing Behavior of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube in Polyacrylonitrile
Promoting the feasibility of carbon films as electrode applications requires sufficient performances in view of both electrical and mechanical properties. Herein, carbon films with ultrahigh electrical conductivity and mechanical modulus are prepared by high temperature carbonization of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) nanocomposites. Achieving both performances is ascribed to remarkable graphitic crystallinity, resulting from the sequential templating???coalescing behavior of concentrated SWNT bundles (B-CNTs). While well-dispersed SWNTs (WD-CNTs) facilitate radial templating according to their tubular geometry, flattened B-CNTs sandwiched between carbonized PAN matrices induce vertical templating, where the former and latter produce concentric and planar crystallizations of the graphitic structure, respectively. After carbonization at 2500 ??C with the remaining WD-CNTs as microstructural defects, the flattened B-CNTs coalesce into graphitic crystals by zipping the surrounding matrix, resulting in high crystallinity with the crystal thicknesses of 27.4 and 39.4 nm for the (002) and (10) planes, respectively. For comparison, the graphene oxide (GO) containing carbon films produce a less-ordered graphitic phase owing to irregular templating, despite the geometrical consistency. Consequently, PAN/B-CNT carbon films exhibit exceptional electrical conductivity (40.7 ?? 104 S m???1) and mechanical modulus (38.2 ?? 6.4 GPa). Thus, controlling the templating???coalescing behavior of SWNTs is the key for improving final performances of carbon films
Membrane-Bound Methyltransferase Complex VapA-VipC-VapB Guides Epigenetic Control of Fungal Development
Epigenetic and transcriptional control of gene
expression must be coordinated in response to
external signals to promote alternative multicellular
developmental programs. The membrane-associated
trimeric complex VapA-VipC-VapB controls a
signal transduction pathway for fungal differentiation.
The VipC-VapB methyltransferases are tethered
to the membrane by the FYVE-like zinc finger protein
VapA, allowing the nuclear VelB-VeA-LaeA complex
to activate transcription for sexual development.
Once the release from VapA is triggered, VipCVapB
is transported into the nucleus. VipC-VapB
physically interacts with VeA and reduces its nuclear
import and protein stability, thereby reducing the
nuclear VelB-VeA-LaeA complex. Nuclear VapB
methyltransferase diminishes the establishment of
facultative heterochromatin by decreasing histone 3
lysine 9 trimethylation (H3K9me3). This favors activation
of the regulatory genes brlA and abaA, which
promote the asexual program. The VapA-VipCVapB
methyltransferase pathway combines control
of nuclear import and stability of transcription factors
with histone modification to foster appropriate differentiation
responses

Misorientation-angle-dependent electrical transport across molybdenum disulfide grain boundaries
Grain boundaries in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides have unique atomic defect structures and band dispersion relations that depend on the inter-domain misorientation angle. Here, we explore misorientation angle-dependent electrical transport at grain boundaries in monolayer MoS2 by correlating the atomic defect structures of measured devices analysed with transmission electron microscopy and first-principles calculations. Transmission electron microscopy indicates that grain boundaries are primarily composed of 5–7 dislocation cores with periodicity and additional complex defects formed at high angles, obeying the classical low-angle theory for angles <22°. The inter-domain mobility is minimized for angles <9° and increases nonlinearly by two orders of magnitude before saturating at ∼16 cm2 V−1 s−1 around misorientation angle≈20°. This trend is explained via grain-boundary electrostatic barriers estimated from density functional calculations and experimental tunnelling barrier heights, which are ≈0.5 eV at low angles and ≈0.15 eV at high angles (≥20°)
Ticks Collected from Selected Mammalian Hosts Surveyed in the Republic of Korea During 2008-2009
A tick survey was conducted to determine the relative abundance and distribution of ticks associated with selected mammals in the Republic of Korea (ROK) during 2008-2009. A total of 918 ticks were collected from 76 mammals (6 families, 9 species) captured at 6 provinces and 3 Metropolitan Cities in ROK. Haemaphysalis longicornis (54.4%) was the most frequently collected tick, followed by Haemaphysalis flava (28.5%), Ixodes nipponensis (7.6%), Ixodes pomerantzevi (4.8%), Ixodes persulcatus (4.6%), and Haemaphysalis japonica (0.1%). Adults (57.0%) and nymphs (28.7%) of Ixodes and Haemaphysalis spp. were collected most frequently from medium or large mammals in this survey, while few larvae (14.3%) were collected. Hydropotes inermis was the most frequently captured mammal (52.6%), with a 16.4 tick index and 5 of 6 species of ticks collected during this survey. H. longicornis (69.7%) was the predominant tick collected from H. inermis, followed by H. flava (22.2%), I. persulcatus (6.1%), I. nipponensis (1.8%), and H. japonica (0.2%)
Efficacy and Long-Term Follow Up of Combination Therapy with Interferon Alpha and Ribavirin for Chronic Hepatitis C in Korea
Combination therapy with interferon alpha (IFN-α) and ribavirin for 24 or 48 weeks according to HCV genotype has improved the overall sustained virological response (SVR) rates to approximately 40%. The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term efficacy of combination therapy with IFN-α and ribavirin for chronic hepatitis C in Koreans. One hundred thirty-eight patients with chronic hepatitis C who received this combination therapy between 1995 and 2003 were analyzed retrospectively. All patients were treated with IFN-α 3-6 million units three times weekly in combination with 900-1200 mg/day of ribavirin for 24 weeks. The overall SVR rate was 41.3%. Patients were followed up for a median of 41 months (range, 12-105 months) after completion of therapy. In all of the SVR patients (57 patients), SVR was conserved during the follow-up period. None of the patients progressed to decompensated liver disease or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, 5 of the 81 non-SVR patients (6.2%) progressed to decompensated liver disease or HCC. In conclusion, combination therapy with IFN-α and ribavirin shows good long-term efficacy in patients with chronic hepatitis C in Korea, one of the highest endemic areas of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection
Prospective Validation of FibroTest in Comparison with Liver Stiffness for Predicting Liver Fibrosis in Asian Subjects with Chronic Hepatitis B
Liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and FibroTest (FT) are frequently used as non-invasive alternatives for fibrosis staging to liver biopsy. However, to date, diagnostic performances of Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) test, which consists of hyaluronic acid, aminoterminal propeptide of procollagen type-III, and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases-1, have not been compared to those of LSM and FT in Asian chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients.Between June 2010 and November 2011, we prospectively enrolled 170 CHB patients who underwent liver biopsies along with LSM, FT, and ELF. The Batts system was used to assess fibrosis stages.Areas under receiver operating characteristic curves (AUROCs) to predict significant fibrosis (F≥2), advanced fibrosis (F≥3), and cirrhosis (F = 4) were 0.901, 0.860, and 0.862 for ELF, respectively; 0.937, 0.956, and 0.963 for LSM; and 0.896, 0.921, and 0.881 for FT. AUROCs to predict F≥2 were similar between each other, whereas LSM and FT had better AUROCs than ELF for predicting F≥3 (both p<0.05), and LSM predicted F4 more accurately than ELF (p<0.05). Optimized cutoffs of ELF to maximize sum of sensitivity and specificity were 8.5, 9.4, and 10.1 for F≥2, F≥3, and F = 4, respectively. Using suggested ELF, LSM and FT cutoffs to diagnose F1, F2, F3, and F4, 91 (53.5%), 117 (68.8%), and 110 (64.7%) patients, respectively, were correctly classified according to histological results.ELF demonstrated considerable diagnostic value in fibrosis staging in Asian CHB patients, especially in predicting F≥2. However, LSM consistently provided better performance for predicting F≥3 and F4
Induction chemotherapy in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma of the paranasal sinus and nasal cavity: A role in organ preservation
Background/Aims: The role of induction chemotherapy (IC) for eyeball preservation has not been established in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) of the paranasal sinus and nasal cavity (PNSNC). Periorbital involvement frequently leads to eyeball exenteration with a margin of safety. We evaluated the treatment outcomes, including survival and eyeball preservation, of patients who received IC for HNSCC of the PNSNC. Methods: We reviewed 21 patients diagnosed with HNSCC of the PNSNC who were treated with IC. We analyzed response, eyeball preservation rate, and overall survival. Results: Tumors were located in the paranasal sinus (n = 14) or nasal cavity (n = 7). Most patients had stage T4a (n = 10) or T4b (n = 7) disease. More than half of the patients received a chemotherapy regimen of docetaxel, fluorouracil, and cisplatin (n = 11). Thirteen patients (61.9%) achieved a partial response after IC and 15 patients (71.4%) achieved T down-staging. Among 17 patients with stage T4 disease, which confers a high risk of orbital exenteration, 14 (82.4%) achieved preservation of the involved eye. The 3-year overall survival (OS) rate of patients who achieved a partial response to IC was 84.6%. The 3-year OS rate of patients with stable disease or disease progression after IC was 25.0% (p = 0.038). Conclusions: IC could be considered for down-staging patients with advanced T-stage disease. It could also be a reasonable option for eyeball preservation in locally advanced HNSCC of the PNSNC.
