Detection of π+π\pi^+\pi^-atoms with the DIRAC spectrometer at CERN

The goal of the DIRAC experiment at CERN is to measure with high precision the lifetime of the π+π\pi^+\pi^- atom (A2πA_{2\pi}), which is of order 3×10153\times10^{-15} s, and thus to determine the s-wave ππ\pi\pi-scattering lengths difference a0a2|a_{0}-a_{2}|. A2πA_{2\pi} atoms are detected through the characteristic features of π+π\pi^+\pi^- pairs from the atom break-up (ionization) in the target. We report on a first high statistics atomic data sample obtained from p Ni interactions at 24 GeV/cc proton momentum and present the methods to separate the signal from the background.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 1 tabl

Weight Loss and Mortality in Overweight and Obese Cancer Survivors: A Systematic Review

Background Excess adiposity is a risk factor for poorer cancer survival, but there is uncertainty over whether losing weight reduces the risk. We conducted a critical review of the literature examining weight loss and mortality in overweight or obese cancer survivors. Methods We systematically searched PubMed and EMBASE for articles reporting associations between weight loss and mortality (cancer-specific or all-cause) in overweight/obese patients with obesity-related cancers. Where available, data from the same studies on non-overweight patients were compared. Results Five articles describing observational studies in breast cancer survivors were included. Four studies reported a positive association between weight loss and mortality in overweight/obese survivors, and the remaining study observed no significant association. Results were similar for non-overweight survivors. Quality assessment indicated high risk of bias across studies. Conclusions There is currently a lack of observational evidence that weight loss improves survival for overweight and obese cancer survivors. However, the potential for bias in these studies is considerable and the results likely reflect the consequences of disease-related rather than intentional weight loss. There is a need for stronger study designs, incorporating measures of intentionality of weight loss, and extended to other cancers

On the relevance of the maximum entropy principle in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics

    No full text
At first glance, the maximum entropy principle (MEP) apparently allows us to derive, or justify in a simple way, fundamental results of equilibrium statistical mechanics. Because of this, a school of thought considers the MEP as a powerful and elegant way to make predictions in physics and other disciplines, rather than a useful technical tool like others in statistical physics. From this point of view the MEP appears as an alternative and more general predictive method than the traditional ones of statistical physics. Actually, careful inspection shows that such a success is due to a series of fortunate facts that characterize the physics of equilibrium systems, but which are absent in situations not described by Hamiltonian dynamics, or generically in nonequilibrium phenomena. Here we discuss several important examples in non equilibrium statistical mechanics, in which the MEP leads to incorrect predictions, proving that it does not have a predictive nature. We conclude that, in these paradigmatic examples, an approach that uses a detailed analysis of the relevant aspects of the dynamics cannot be avoided
