Le De duodecim patriarchis ou Beniamin minor de Richard de Saint-Victor. Description et essai de classification des manuscrits

J. Châtillon had been preparing for a long time the critical edition of the De duodecim patriarchis, or Beniamin minor, a spiritual opuscule by Richard of Saint-Victor 1 1 73 (P. L. , 196, 1-64), but he died (29-IX-1988) before finishing this work. We think it would be useful, so as to make the research go on, to publish the description and the classification of the many extant manuscripts, which part of the planned edition had been almost carried out. The book of Richard of Saint-Victor has not too much suffered from his wide diffusion. Most of the variants we notice are slight and rarely modify the meaning of the text. However, it appears that Beniamin minor has been transmitted in two different states : the oldest division, having twenty-one paragraphs, the length of which is very unequal, another one, which is more recent, having eighty-six or eighty-seven chapters. Both of them go back to Richard himself. Some manuscripts show both distributions.Depuis de nombreuses années, Jean Châtillon préparait l'édition critique du De duodecim patriarchis ou Beniamin minor, opuscule spirituel célèbre de Richard de Saint- Victor (P. t., 196, 1-64), mais la mort (29 septembre 1988) l'a empêché de mener à terme ce travail. Afin de faciliter la poursuite des recherches, il a semblé utile de publier la description, à peu près achevée par l'auteur, des nombreux manuscrits du traité. Celui-ci n'a pas trop souffert de sa vaste diffusion manuscrite : les variantes relevées n'affectent pas, sauf de rares exceptions, la signification du texte. Cependant, l'ouvrage a été transmis sous deux formes différentes qui paraissent remonter toutes deux à Richard de Saint- Victor : l'une en vingt et un paragraphes de très inégale longueur ; l'autre, postérieure, en quatre-vingt-six ou quatre-vingt-sept chapitres munis d'un titre.
