A Theoretical Approach for Determining Irregularities of the Bottom of the Tillage Layer Caused by Horizontal Axis Rotary Tillers

    Get PDF
Horizontal axis rotary tillers produce irregularities in the tillage depth when they are inappropriately operated and constructed. In such cases, mixing and breaking of soil throughout the tillage layer is not uniform and some untilled ridges will remain at the bottom determining the effect of design and operational characteristics on the height of the resultant ridges at the bottom of the tillage layer. In this study, a method based on the derived geometrical relationships between the rotary tiller operational parameters was developed to determine heights of ridges occurring at the bottom of the tillage layer. The ridge heights can be calculated for various combinations of blade peripheral speed, forward travel speed, rotor radius, and the number of blades on one side of a rotary tiller flange. This method allows for the investigation of effects of rotary tiller operational and constructional properties of horizontal axis rotary tillers on the ridge heights at the bottom of the tillage layers. The results obtained using this method show that the heights of ridges at the bottom of the tillage layer increase with increases in forward travel speed and decrease with increases in blade peripheral speed, rotor radius, and the number of blades on one side of a flange

Winding configurations for a six phase switched reluctance machine

    Get PDF
Winding configurations are investigated for a six phase, 12-10 switched reluctance machine having single tooth wound coils and being driven from a conventional three phase full bridge converter with the addition of six diodes. A new winding configuration is proposed and shown to develop more torque with less torque ripple than a conventional winding in this application. Finite element modelling is used to investigate the electromagnetic behaviour and compare the performance of different winding configurations. Initial experimental tests are described in verification of the modelling. The novel drive and new winding configuration offer significant advantages over a standard three phase machine and drive, giving increased mean torque with lower torque ripple and acoustic noise, as well as reduced converter complexity and potentially cost

Z3_3-graded differential geometry of quantum plane

In this work, the Z3_3-graded differential geometry of the quantum plane is constructed. The corresponding quantum Lie algebra and its Hopf algebra structure are obtained. The dual algebra, i.e. universal enveloping algebra of the quantum plane is explicitly constructed and an isomorphism between the quantum Lie algebra and the dual algebra is given.Comment: 17 page

Kinematic landslide monitoring with Kalman filtering

    No full text
International audienceLandslides are serious geologic disasters that threat human life and property in every country. In addition, landslides are one of the most important natural phenomena, which directly or indirectly affect countries' economy. Turkey is also the country that is under the threat of landslides. Landslides frequently occur in all of the Black Sea region as well as in many parts of Marmara, East Anatolia, and Mediterranean regions. Since these landslides resulted in destruction, they are ranked as the second important natural phenomenon that comes after earthquake in Turkey. In recent years several landslides happened after heavy rains and the resulting floods. This makes the landslide monitoring and mitigation techniques an important study subject for the related professional disciplines in Turkey. The investigations on surface deformations are conducted to define the boundaries of the landslide, size, level of activity and direction(s) of the movement, and to determine individual moving blocks of the main slide. This study focuses on the use of a kinematic deformation analysis based on Kalman Filtering at a landslide area near Istanbul. Kinematic deformation analysis has been applied in a landslide area, which is located to the north of Istanbul city. Positional data were collected using GPS technique. As part of the study, conventional static deformation analysis methodology has also been applied on the same data. The results and comparisons are discussed in this paper

The importance of carotid artery stiffness and increased intimamedia thickness in obese children

Background. Atherosclerosis that starts in childhood invariablyadvances during adulthood.Aim. We aimed to study the effect of obesity on main carotidartery intima-media thickness (CIMT) and arterial stiffness.Material and methods. A total of 78 children were studied fromOctober 2010 to February 2011. They were divided into obese (n=42,group 1) and normal (n=36, group 2). All children were subjectedto physical examination, routine biochemical and haematologicalanalysis, carotid ultrasonography and echocardiographicmeasurements. A detailed medical history was obtained. Bodymass index (BMI) was calculated by dividing participants’ weight inkilograms by the square of their height in metres. Stiffness index âwas calculated using blood pressure and diameter of the systolicand diastolic artery. Intima-media thickness was also measured.Results. The mean age of the obese and normal (control) groupswas 10.12±2.12 years and 9.78±1.78 years, respectively. Weight, BMI,and systolic and diastolic blood pressure values were significantlyhigher in the obese group (all p<0.001). In terms of arterial stiffnessand CIMT measurements, all parameters were higher in the obesegroup than the control (p<0.001). There was a relationship betweenthe degree of obesity and CIMT or stiffness index â. In addition, dilatation and hypertrophy levels in the left ventricle were higherin obese children.Conclusions. Obese children with risk factors for multipleatherosclerosis could have increased CIMT dimensions and, consequently, should be screened for these risks. UltrasonographicCIMT and arterial stiffness measurements can detect vasculardamage at an early stage of development in children withcardiovascular risk factors

A New Approach to Spin Glass Simulations

We present a recursive procedure to calculate the parameters of the recently introduced multicanonical ensemble and explore the approach for spin glasses. Temperature dependence of the energy, the entropy and other physical quantities are easily calculable and we report results for the zero temperature limit. Our data provide evidence that the large LL increase of the ergodicity time is greatly improved. The multicanonical ensemble seems to open new horizons for simulations of spin glasses and other systems which have to cope with conflicting constraints
