[1] Rellá, V. EFFECT OF NORMAL BODY FORCE ON FINGERING INSTABILITY OF A LIQUID SHEET DRIVEN BY SHEAR STRESS OR GRAVITY

ABSTRACT A thin liquid sheet driven by either gravity or shear force along a flat plate exhibits a long-wave fingering instability at the liquid front that leads to development of small rivulets of liquid penetrating into the unwetted part of the plate. Rivulet formation causes uneven surface wetting and degrades coating efficiency of the liquid film. The fingering instability occurs because thicker regions of the liquid sheet experience less resistance from the solid surface, and can hence move forward at a faster rate, than thinner regions of the sheet. As this process proceeds, mass conservation acts to make the thin regions of the sheet thinner in order to supply fluid for the thicker regions of the sheet to move forward. The current paper examines the effect on the fingering instability of a body force, such as gravity or centrifugal acceleration, oriented normal to the plate. The presence of a normal body force gives rise to a normal pressure gradient within the liquid sheet. When one region of the sheet becomes thinner than a neighboring region, the normal body force leads to a pressure force acting parallel to the plate that pushes fluid from the thick regions toward the thin regions of the sheet, thus inhibiting the fingering instability. The paper reports both a linear stability analysis of the fingering instability in the presence of a normal body force and a computational study of the effect of normal body force on rivulet development. INTRODUCTION The front of a liquid sheet driven along a flat plate by gravity or interfacial shear stress develops a ridge of liquid with larger sheet thickness than the liquid sheet as a whole. If this front is perturbed such that there exists a slight periodic variation in layer thickness along the ridge, an instability can develop such that the thicker regions of the ridge experience less resistance, and hence move forward at a faster rate, tha

Assessing the Challenges of Internally Displaced Persons in Times of Armed Conflict: The Case of Cameroon

    Get PDF
From time immemorial, humanity has been characterised by displacement which could be wilful or forceful. Forced displacement is caused by varied factors amongst which we have armed conflict and persons displaced from this are oftentimes plagued by challenges. Using observation and interviews with the help of the constructivist theory, its evident Cameroon struggling with a number of armed conflicts, has IDPs from these faced with challenges ranging from poverty, lodging, health, education, hate speech and so on which are consequences of their being displaced by armed conflict. These defies from findings are inherent to the conflict and at times related to the IDPs’ cohabitation with the host. Difficulties which explains the efforts made by the state and other actors to provide these IDPs with live saving skills for their survival, material assistance, lodging and many more; to remedy these challenges though more could be done in terms of ensuring proper cohabitation between the IDPs and their host, ensuring the resolution of the conflict responsible for the force displacement and safeguarding the protection of these IDPs from unscrupulous persons in the case of the IDPs of the Boko Haram Insurgency and the Anglophone conflict in Cameroon

Collective Action and Application of Tax Regulation in the Mining Industry in Development Countries: the Case of Cameroon

This paper highlights civil society actors involved in collecting and monitoring the tax obligations of mining companies in Cameroon. To achieve this goal, we used data collection from leaders or members of civil society companies through semi-structured interviews using a questionnaire developed for this purpose on the one hand and the tools of game theory and sociology of behavior on the other hand. The study shows that there are two civil society organization groups (CSOs) in the extractive sector: CSO leaders and CSO followers. They are all grouped together in the "Cameroon Coalition Publish What You Pay". They are characterized by a lack of specialization, a strong identity withdrawal and a lack of expertise in public finances because the promoters are recruited in various sectors of the working life. One could speak of an inadequacy training job and a game indefinitely repeated between the actors

Guiding Principle 28: The Unfulfilled Promise to End Protracted Displacement in Azerbaijan

    Get PDF
In 1998 internal displacement became a major focus of international concern with the adoption the Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement by the United Nations. This seminal document outlined the rights and protections of internally displaced persons (IDPs), as well as developing policy solutions for ending displacement. In the two decades since the adoption of the Guiding Principles, there has been an explosion of research into various case studies. This paper re-examines the case of Azerbaijan within a new theoretical framework. This paper uses the work of Walter Kalin, former UN Secretary-General on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons (2004-2010), and Phil Orchard, an eminent scholar of internal displacement, to argue that contrary to the reports of international organizations and other academic scholars, Azerbaijan has failed to make any significant progress in resolving its situation of protracted internal displacement, and has actively implemented policies which undermine a resolution to internal displacement. This paper further offers the case of Georgia as a policy contrast to Azerbaijan. This paper further asks the question of how the international community can better advocate for durable solutions in recalcitrant and reluctant states

    First bilingual issue

We are pleased to present to you this new bilingual issue of PISTES. In so doing, we want to make Francophone work in occupational health known in the Anglo-Saxon community. The translation of this issue was made possible due to a grant from the SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada) as well as to the contribution of some authors whom we wish to thank. This issue addresses several research topics related to people’s work and health. First, an article by Alain Garrig..
