This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary inclusion of plant feedstuff mixture (PFM) pre-treated by solid-state fermentation (SSF) on the physiological responses of European seabass. For that purpose, two diets were formulated to contain: 20% inclusion level of non-fermented plant ingredients mixture (20Mix) and 20Mix fermented by A. niger in SSF conditions (20Mix-SSF). Seabass juveniles (initial body weight: 20.9 ± 3.3 g) were fed the experimental diets, reared at two different temperatures (21 and 26 °C) and subjected to weekly salinity oscillations for six weeks. Growth performance, digestive enzyme activities, humoral immune parameters, and oxidative stress indicators were evaluated. A reduction in weight gain, feed intake, and thermal growth coefficient was observed in fish fed the fermented diet (20Mix-SSF). Salinity oscillation led to an increase in weight gain, feed efficiency, daily growth index, and thermal growth coefficient, regardless of dietary treatment. Higher rearing temperatures also increased daily growth index. No dietary effect was observed on digestive enzymes activities, whereas rearing temperature and salinity oscillation modulated digestive enzyme activities. Oxidative stress responses were significantly affected by experimental diets, temperature, and salinity conditions. Catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities showed an interactive effect. Fish reared at 21 °C showed higher enzymatic activity when fed the 20Mix-SSF. Conversely, fish reared at 26 °C showed higher GPx activity when fed the 20Mix diet. Fish reared at 26 °C showed reduced peroxidase and lysozyme activities, while salinity fluctuation led to increased lysozyme activity and decreased ACH50 activity. ACH50 activity increased in fish fed the 20Mix-SSF. Overall, the dietary inclusion of PFM fermented by A. niger was unable to mitigate the impact of environmental stress on physiological performance in European seabass. In fact, fermented feed caused an inhibition of growth performances and an alteration of some physiological stress indicators. This work was funded by the Ocean3R project (NORT-01-0145-FEDER-000064), supported by the North Portugal Regional Operational Program (NORT2020), under the PORTUGAL 2020 Partnership Agreement and through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Combined effects of temperature and dietary lipid level on body composition, growth, and freshness profile in european seabass, dicentrarchus labrax

    Get PDF
The effects of increasing temperature and dietary lipid level on the body composition, growth performance, and freshness profile of the European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were evaluated through a fish trial lasting 56 days. Findings demonstrated that fish reared at 24 °C presented a lower lipid level and a higher daily growth index than those reared at 20 °C. On the other hand, the sea bass condition index did not change among treatments. Additionally, sensory analysis (the Quality Index Method) and microbiological analysis revealed that fish reared at 24 °C showed better freshness conditions than those at 20 °C. Nevertheless, the dietary lipid level did not have any influence on fish freshness conditions. Therefore, our data suggest that the increase in temperature to 24 °C is beneficial for the growth and freshness profile of this particular species in aquaculture.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This work presents the results about the fabrication and characterization of thin films of NiFe and NiFeCo alloys. The attempts to construct the planar fluxgate are also presented. Galvanostatic electrodeposition using an electrolytic solution containing Ni and Fe was used: NiSO4 (0,7 mol/l); NiCl2 (0,02 mol/l); FeSO4 (0,03 mol/l); H3BO3 (0,4 mol/l) and C7H5O3NS.2H2O (0,016 mol/l). The auxiliary electrode was made on Ni for the NiFe films, while another one made on Co was used for the NiFeCo films. Films were deposited on copper substrates using current densities form 4 up to 28 mA/cm2, and total deposition time of 40 and 60 minutes. Structural characterization was performed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (surface and cross-section); Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, and Xray Diffraction. Magnetic characterization was performed using two methods: the Vibrating Sample Magnetometry and magnetometry using a SQUID (Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices) sensor. NiFe films grow with crystalline planes oriented along the (110) e (200) directions; the amount of each material reach constant values for current densities above 15 mA/cm2 (even though there is always more Ni). The point of minimum magnetic coercivity (58,4 A/m) also occurs for this current density, where films 1 ?m-thick are obtained for a total deposition time of 40 minutes. An asymmetry is observed for magnetic fields applied parallel and perpendicular to the surface of the films. NiFeCo films grow with crystalline planes oriented along the (111) and (200) directions; the amount of Ni remains constant (about 70%) for the whole current density range. The amount of Fe decreases with increasing current density, while the amout of Co shows the opposite behavior. They have equal values for current densities of about 15mA/cm2, where the minimum coercivity of 81A/m is achieved. For higher current densities the coercivity remains constant. For the current density of 15mA/cm2, 6 ?m-thick films are obtained for a total deposition time of 40 minutes. The magnetic asymmetry is smaller than for the case of the NiFe films. According to the obtained data, we believe that NiFeCo is a better candidate for the fabrication of planar magnetic fluxgate sensors. Initial tests for the fabrication of a prototype are also presented

This work had the aim of the development of dosimetric systems based on Si special diodes, resistant to radiation damage to online monitoring of irradiation processing using 1.5 MeV electrons energy and for relative dosimetry and clinical electron beam scanning within an energy range of 6 MeV up to 21 MeV. The diodes used were produced by Float Zone standard (FZ), Magnetic Czochralski (MCz) and epitaxy growth (EPI) methods. In order to use the diodes as detectors, they were fixed on alumina base to allow the connection of the polarization electrodes and the signals extraction. After the diode assembly on the base, each one was housed in a black acrylic probe with aluminized Mylar® window and LEMO® connector. With the devices operating in photovoltaic mode, the integration of the current signals as a function of irradiation time allowed obtain the charge produced in the sensitive volume of each diode irradiated. The electron accelerator used for high doses irradiation was the DC 1500/25/4 JOB 188 of the 1.5 MeV installed at the Radiation Technology Center of the IPEN/CNEN-SP. The current profile as function of exposure time, the response repeatability, the sensitivity as function of absorbed dose and the dose response curve were studied for each device. In comparison to FZ diode, we observed a greater decrease in the sensitivity for MCz diode, and good repeatability in both cases. Also, the increasing of the charge with the absorbed dose was well fitted by a second order polynomial function. In the EPI diode characterization, this one exhibited repeatability better than CTA dosimeters applied routinely in radiation processing. The above results indicate the potential use of these radiation hardness Si diodes in online dosimetry to high doses applications. For low doses irradiation were used the linear accelerators KD2 and Primus, both manufactured by Siemens and located at Sirio-Libanês Hospital. The diodes responses were evaluated for electron beams within the energy range of 6 MeV up to 21 MeV. The following studies were carried out: the short-term repeatability, the dose-response curve as a function of absorbed dose, the charge sensitivity as function of electron beam energy, the percentage depth dose (PPD) and the dose transversal profile. Despite the response of the diodes FZ, MCz and EPI be slightly dependent on the electron beam energy, the dosimetric response was linear in all electron beam energy range studied. In addition to this, the EPI devices showed excellent agreement with simulation performed with Monte Carlo code and the measurements performed with MatriXX®, confirming that the devices can be used as dosimeters in radiotherapy for scanning purposes, dose distribution mapping, constancy monitoring of calibration factor and relative dosimetry

Dietary tributyrin supplementation enhances the immune and antioxidant responses of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) without changes in fish performance

Dietary supplementation with tributyrin (TBT), a source of butyric acid, has been shown to improve growth performance and health status when high levels of plant ingredients are included in aquafeeds. Here, we investigated the response of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to a plant-based diet supplemented with TBT aiming to improve fish performance and welfare. Juvenile rainbow trout (19.0 ± 0.19 g, mean ± SEM) were divided into 12 tanks (210 L, 40 fish/tank) connected to a RAS system and fed four experimental diets in triplicate to apparent satiety. Diets tested comprised a basal diet (CTR) including 10% fishmeal and 10% fish oil, plus 83% plant-derived ingredients (44% crude protein, 18% crude fat, gross energy 21.8 MJ kg 1) with increasing inclusion levels of TBT (55% purity), supplying 0.05% (TBT1), 0.1% (TBT2) and 0.2% (TBT4) of this compound. Fish performance was evaluated after 44 days. Following the growth trial, the effect of the diets on selected plasma innate immune and hepatic antioxidant parameters of trout was investigated at 3 h and 24 h after feeding. TBT supplementation had no significant impact on growth performance, feed efficiency, feed intake, or proximal composition in rainbow trout (P > 0.05). However, the plasma lysozyme activity was higher in fish fed the TBT2 diet than in those fed CTR or TBT4 diets after 3 h (P = 0.021). In addition, the plasma antiprotease activity in fish fed the TBT2 and TBT4 diets was higher than those fed the CTR diet after 24 h (P = 0.010 and 0.013, respectively). Catalase activity in the liver of trout fed the TBT4 diet was higher than in fish fed CTR or TBT2 diets after 3 h (P = 0.016 and 0.019). Results showed that effective levels of dietary TBT supplementation at 0.1% and 0.2% could result in improved immune and antioxidant responses in trout, respectively. Therefore, dietary TBT supplementation in this carnivorous species may result in enhanced welfare when high levels of plant-derived ingredients are used in aquafeeds

Interspecific differences in the physiological condition of native freshwater mussels in response to the invasive Asian clam Corbicula fluminea

    No full text
The Asian clam Corbicula fluminea has been widely introduced into aquatic ecosystems and may impact the physiological condition and survival of native freshwater mussels. However, very few studies have evaluated this issue quantitatively. To fill this gap, manipulative field experiments were performed to assess two possible mechanisms of impact on native mussels: (i) interspecific interactions, and (ii) C. fluminea die-offs. We assessed these effects by measuring the physiological condition through the analysis of glycogen content in the foot tissue of the native freshwater mussel species Anodonta anatina, Potomida littoralis, and Unio delphinus. Although with interspecific differences, our results suggest that C. fluminea can impact the physiological condition of native freshwater mussels. Anodonta anatina showed positive significant variations on glycogen content when subjected to high densities of live C. fluminea in contrast to the other native species studied, P. littoralis and U. delphinus, where no significances were observed. On the other hand, these native species do not seem be significantly impacted by the decomposition of C. fluminea resulting from a die-off. Overall, and contrary to our expectations, both experiments showed a positive (or no) effect of C. fluminea on the physiological condition of the three freshwater mussel species.VM, PC, and FC were supported by doctoral grants SFRH/BD/108298/2015, SFRH/BD/131814/2017 and SFRH/BD/119957/2016, respectively, from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology - FCT through POPH/FSE funds. Furlanetto KC, Bisca GW, Oldemberg N. Sant'Anna TJ, Morakami FK, Camillo CA, Cavalheri V, Hernandes NA, Probst VS, Ramos EM, Brunetto AF, Pitta F. Step counting and energy expenditure estimation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and healthy elderly: accuracy of 2 motion sensors. Arch Phys Med Rehabil 2010;91:261-7.Objective: To compare the accuracy of 2 motion sensors (a pedometer and a multisensor) in terms of step counting and estimation of energy expenditure (EE) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and in healthy elderly.Design: In this descriptive study, all participants wore both motion sensors while performing a treadmill walking protocol at 3 different speeds corresponding to 30%, 60%, and 100% of the average speed achieved during a six-minute walk test. As criterion methods, EE was estimated by indirect calorimetry, and steps were registered by videotape.Setting: Research laboratory at a university hospital.Participants: Patients with COPD (n=30; 17 men; mean age +/- SD, 67 +/- 8y; mean forced expiratory volume in the first second [FEV(1)] predicted +/- SD, 46% +/- 17%; mean body mass index [BMI] +/- SD, 24 +/- 4kg.m(2)) and matched healthy elderly (n=30; 15 men; mean age +/- SD, 68 +/- 7y; mean FEV(1) predicted +/- SD, 104% +/- 21%; mean BMI +/- SD, 25 +/- 3kg.m(2)).Interventions: Not applicable.Main Outcome Measure: Step counting and EE estimation during a treadmill walking protocol. Results: The pedometer was accurate for step counting and EE estimation in both patients with COPD and healthy elderly at the higher speed. However, it showed significant underestimation at the 2 slower speeds in both groups. The multisensor did not detect steps accurately at any speed, although it accurately estimated EE at all speeds in healthy elderly and at the intermediate and higher speeds in patients with COPD.Conclusions: In both patients with COPD and healthy elderly, the multisensor showed better EE estimates during most walking speeds than the pedometer. Conversely, for step counting, accuracy is observed only with the pedometer during the higher walking speed in both groups.Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq
