Vascular Tissue Engineering: Recent Advances in Small Diameter Blood Vessel Regeneration
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality around the globe. The development of a functional and appropriate substitute for small diameter blood vessel replacement is still a challenge to overcome the main drawbacks of autografts and the inadequate performances of synthetic prostheses made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET, Dacron) and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE, Goretex). Therefore, vascular tissue engineering has become a promising approach for small diameter blood vessel regeneration as demonstrated by the increasing interest dedicated to this field. This review is focused on the most relevant and recent studies concerning vascular tissue engineering for small diameter blood vessel applications. Specifically, the present work reviews research on the development of tissue-engineered vascular grafts made of decellularized matrices and natural and/or biodegradable synthetic polymers and their realization without scaffold
Promoting beneficial and inhibiting undesirable biofilm formation with mangrove extracts
The extracts of two mangrove species, Bruguiera cylindrica and Laguncularia racemosa, have been analyzed at sub-lethal concentrations for their potential to modulate biofilm cycles (i.e., adhesion, maturation, and detachment) on a bacterium, yeast, and filamentous fungus. Methanolic leaf extracts were also characterized, and MS/MS analysis has been used to identify the major compounds. In this study, we showed the following. (i) Adhesion was reduced up to 85.4% in all the models except for E. coli, where adhesion was promoted up to 5.10-fold. (ii) Both the sum and ratio of extracellular polysaccharides and proteins in mature biofilm were increased up to 2.5-fold and 2.6-fold in comparison to the negative control, respectively. Additionally, a shift toward a major production of exopolysaccharides was found coupled with a major production of both intracellular and extracellular reactive oxygen species. (iii) Lastly, detachment was generally promoted. In general, the L. racemosa extract had a higher bioactivity at lower concentrations than the B. cylindrica extract. Overall, our data showed a reduction in cells/conidia adhesion under B. cylindrica and L. racemosa exposure, followed by an increase of exopolysaccharides during biofilm maturation and a variable effect on biofilm dispersal. In conclusion, extracts either inhibited or enhanced biofilm development, and this effect depended on both the microbial taxon and biofilm formation step
What's behind your eosinophilic myocarditis? A case of Churg–Strauss syndrome diagnosed during acute heart failure
Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) is a rare multisystem disorder; cardiac involvement may include eosinophilic myocarditis. A 67-year-old woman presented with 1-week history of dyspnoea and orthopnoea. She had a history of adult-onset asthma and peripheral eosinophilia. The investigations showed T-wave inversion on lateral leads, peripheral eosinophilia, elevated troponin and BNP values, and severe biventricular systolic dysfunction with diffuse hypokinesia and apical akinesia. Computed tomography excluded coronary disease and showed bilateral basal ground-glass opacities, air-space consolidation, and bilateral reticular-nodular pattern. Cardiac magnetic resonance findings were compatible with active myocardial inflammation. An endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) confirmed the diagnosis of eosinophilic myocarditis, and a therapy with oral corticosteroids and heart failure medications was started
The IDENTIFY study: the investigation and detection of urological neoplasia in patients referred with suspected urinary tract cancer - a multicentre observational study
Objective
To evaluate the contemporary prevalence of urinary tract cancer (bladder cancer, upper tract urothelial cancer [UTUC] and renal cancer) in patients referred to secondary care with haematuria, adjusted for established patient risk markers and geographical variation.
Patients and Methods
This was an international multicentre prospective observational study. We included patients aged ≥16 years, referred to secondary care with suspected urinary tract cancer. Patients with a known or previous urological malignancy were excluded. We estimated the prevalence of bladder cancer, UTUC, renal cancer and prostate cancer; stratified by age, type of haematuria, sex, and smoking. We used a multivariable mixed-effects logistic regression to adjust cancer prevalence for age, type of haematuria, sex, smoking, hospitals, and countries.
Results
Of the 11 059 patients assessed for eligibility, 10 896 were included from 110 hospitals across 26 countries. The overall adjusted cancer prevalence (n = 2257) was 28.2% (95% confidence interval [CI] 22.3–34.1), bladder cancer (n = 1951) 24.7% (95% CI 19.1–30.2), UTUC (n = 128) 1.14% (95% CI 0.77–1.52), renal cancer (n = 107) 1.05% (95% CI 0.80–1.29), and prostate cancer (n = 124) 1.75% (95% CI 1.32–2.18). The odds ratios for patient risk markers in the model for all cancers were: age 1.04 (95% CI 1.03–1.05; P < 0.001), visible haematuria 3.47 (95% CI 2.90–4.15; P < 0.001), male sex 1.30 (95% CI 1.14–1.50; P < 0.001), and smoking 2.70 (95% CI 2.30–3.18; P < 0.001).
Conclusions
A better understanding of cancer prevalence across an international population is required to inform clinical guidelines. We are the first to report urinary tract cancer prevalence across an international population in patients referred to secondary care, adjusted for patient risk markers and geographical variation. Bladder cancer was the most prevalent disease. Visible haematuria was the strongest predictor for urinary tract cancer
Synthesis and characterization of ZnO nanostructures for application as gas sensors
Pure or doped ZnO nanostructured compounds that exhibit different morphologies have been identified as promising candidates for the detection of different types of toxic gases due to their electronic properties and high surface/volume ratio, which facilitates the adsorption of gaseous species on their surface. Studies have shown the performance of resistive sensors can be improved by the doping or presence of defects in the network or at the surface of the sensor material. The present doctoral thesis addresses the evaluation of ZnO and Zn1-xCoxO nanostructured films obtained by the polymeric precursor method, RF sputtering deposition and hydrothermal treatment and their application as O3, NO2 and CO gas sensors. Their long-range order structure investigated by the X-ray diffraction technique showed the addition of cobalt decreases the intensity of diffraction peaks. Measurements of X-ray absorption spectra at Co K-edge indicated Co atoms in the samples obtained by the RF sputtering technique and polymeric precursor method predominantly assume the 2+ and 3+ oxidation state. Measurements of electrical resistance were used in the evaluation of ZnO and Zn1-xCoxO nanostructured films sensing properties such as sensitivity, selectivity, response and recovery times under different concentrations of O3, CO and NO2 gases. The electrical resistance of the films exposed to those gases showed the three methodologies of synthesis effectively obtained samples to be applied as gas sensors. However, the sample obtained by the RF-sputtering deposition technique exhibited the best detection properties towards ozone gas and a forty-time higher response value, attributed to greater roughness and microstructural features. Zn1-xCoxO samples obtained by the polymeric precursor method exhibited higher sensitivity and a lower working temperature in relation to ozone gas. Such characteristics were attributed to a better catalytic activity promoted by the addition of Co ions and the presence of defects on the surface of the material, which favors the adsorption of oxygen molecules on the sample surface
As amostras foram caracterizadas por difração de raios X, análises...Climate changes are mainly due to the increasing CO2 atmospheric concentration caused by the burning of fossils fuels. In this context, researh and development of alternative sources of renewable energy have been encouraged for energy production. One of most promising alternative for energy production is Solar Energy, especially in countries with high incidence of solar radiation. Zinc oxide thin films usually have high transmittance in the visible range and low resistivity. This material has been studied as a candidate to replace In2O3:Sn(ITO) in applications such as electrodes in solar cells due of the righ cost of indium and its limited availability. Furthermore ZnO is chemically stable and non-toxic. In this work undoped zinc oxide thin films were deposited by the techniques of spin-coating, dip-coating and Electron beam evaporation (EBE). Resins of ZnO were synthesized by the polymeric precursor method using different zinc precursors (zinc acetate, oxide or nitrate) in order to study the structural and optical properties of thin films prepared by different techniques and using different precursors. The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction measurements (XRD), UV-vis spectra, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). All samples prepared by different deposition techiniques present transmition larger than 80% in the visble range and band gap of 3,28 eV. Also were obtained powder or ZnO synthesized using three different precursor in order to study the influence of precursor utilized in properties of material. The powder were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, field emission scanning microscopy (FE-SEM), thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Through these characterization techniques it was showed that the polymeric precursor... (Complete abstract click electronic access below
