Focusing Singularity in a Derivative Nonlinear Schr\"odinger Equation

We present a numerical study of a derivative nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with a general power nonlinearity, $|\psi|^{2\sigma}\psi_x$. In the $L^2$-supercritical regime, $\sigma>1$, our simulations indicate that there is a finite time singularity. We obtain a precise description of the local structure of the solution in terms of blowup rate and asymptotic profile, in a form similar to that of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with supercritical power law nonlinearity.Comment: 24 pages, 17 figure

Stability of Solitary Waves for a Generalized Derivative Nonlinear Schr\"odinger Equation

We consider a derivative nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with a general nonlinearity. This equation has a two parameter family of solitary wave solutions. We prove orbital stability/instability results that depend on the strength of the nonlinearity and, in some instances, their velocity. "Reading between the lines" : a grounded theory study of text-based synchronous online therapy : how practitioners establish therapeutic relationships online

This qualitative research study explored the therapeutic relationship in online therapy from a counselling psychology perspective. An overview of the different types of online therapy and a brief history of the field were given and the existing literature surrounding online therapy and the therapeutic relationship was critically reviewed. Through this, a need was identified for an understanding of how therapeutic relationships are established in online therapy, with a particular focus on therapy via instant messaging. Semi-structured interviews were conducted asking online therapy practitioners about their experiences of therapeutic relationships. The resulting data were analysed using the grounded theory method and a tentative model of the processes that influence the formation of a therapeutic relationship online was created. An important factor in the model was therapists’ development of skills in online communication, which serve to overcome the lack of a physical presence and non-verbal communication that hinder text-based interactions. Another key influence was the management of the therapeutic frame, which is challenged by the nature of the online setting. Also significant was a client’s rationale for choosing online therapy, which influences their ability to engage in a therapy relationship online. The implications of the findings for counselling psychology professional practice, training and research were discussed

The Whale, Ahab, and the Transgender Human Condition

What could possibly be the relationship between Moby-Dick and the transgender experience? Where lies Moby-Dick’s utility in the context of literary queer theory? Does Moby-Dick have something useful to say to a transgender person? A possible answer is that Moby-Dick may lay a foundation to a specific intellectual process that parallels the transgender human condition. Realizing oneself as transgender necessitates an understanding of gendered norms, applying those norms to oneself, recognizing a dissatisfaction toward that application, and then navigating these norms in a more suitable way. It requires an unavoidable drive to subvert gender constructs despite its consequences. While Ishmael navigates this intellectual process, too, I prefer to focus on Ahab. Ahab negotiates a similar intrapersonal intelligence to the transgender person through a shared sense of agency, rebellion, and self-constructed destiny. Understanding this connection necessitates understanding Moby-Dick as redefining tautological expectations--a disruption that parallels the necessary redefinition of the transgender self. I mean not to imply that Melville had any foresight or insight into the phenomena. I do not consider Moby-Dick a story about transgender people by any definition. I consider it a story that may have something to say to transgender people navigating circumstances similar to my own

Leads to Expanded Social Networks, Increased Civic Engagement and Divisions Within a Community: The Role of Dogs

Dogs play a distinct role in their impact on human relationships and processes because of the unique role they play in American society, existing in a liminal space of almost human. Both the level of emotional attachment and the requisite daily care make dogs important players in bringing humans in contact with one another and mediating human relationships. This study examines the role that dogs play in mediating relationships between and among humans. By analyzing 24 in-depth interviews, as well as Letters to the Editor, editorials, and other items in a local newspaper, and observing public meetings around dog usage at a local park, I identify a range of ways that dogs influence social relationships and processes, even for those who do not have dogs in their homes. On the positive side, Ifind that dogs act as tickets for people to socialize and develop relationships, they facilitate the diversification of social networks, and they act as an avenue to political participation. On the negative side, dog ownership and dog breeds can become the basis for clique formation, stereotypes, and boundary formation, serving as grounds for exclusion

Developing as a Student Peer Reviewer: Enhancing students’ graduate attributes of producing evaluative judgements and oral feedback communication

This research paper explores the processes and outcomes of a peer review system which was introduced to first-year students on a BA Education programme in 2016-17. Students completed a series of tasks linked to both their academic work and professional teaching placements. The scaffolded nature of these tasks aimed to develop the students’ skills, knowledge and confidence as novice peer reviewers. The students’ task responses, written reflections of the peer review process and interviews were analysed, to explore the potential value of producing and giving formative feedback to peers, alongside their perceptions and challenges of the peer review process. The potential sustainability of peer review, linked to its contribution in developing graduate attributes, was considered when peer review moved into the students’ professional context, with two themes emerging: forming evaluative judgements based on an understanding of quality, and peers communicating feedback that was timely, relevant, accurate and understood by the recipient

Application of data mining techniques for building simulation performance prediction analysis

Simulation exercises covering long periods (e.g.. annual simulations) can produce large quantities of data. The result data set is often primarily used to determine key performance parameters such as the frequency binning of internal temperatures. Efforts to obtain an understanding for reasons behind the predicted building performance are often only carried out to a limited extent and simulation is therefore not used to its full potential. This paper describes how data mining can be used to enhance the analysis of results obtained from a simulation exercise. It identifies clustering as a particular useful analysis technique and illustrates its potential in enhancing the analysis of building simulation performance predictions

Foundations in Wisconsin: A Directory [22nd ed. 2003]

This 22nd edition of Foundations in Wisconsin (2003) is the first produced by the new Marquette University John P. Raynor, S.J., Library. The directory is designed as a research tool for grantseekers interested in locating information on private, corporate, and community foundations registered in Wisconsin. Each entry in this new edition has been updated or reviewed to provide the most current information available. Most of the data was extracted from IRS 990-PF tax returns filed by the foundations. However, additional information was obtained from surveys, annual reports, and foundation Web sites. The economy has slowed the growth of Wisconsin foundations. While the number of active foundations grew to 1160 (up slightly from 1151 last year), other areas are showing decline. For the first time in 23 years of reporting, both grants and assets decreased rather than increased. Grants decreased by .6% as compared to last year’s increase of 7.7%. Assets declined by 6.3%, down from the .3% increase documented in 2002.
