    Validity of a two-item physical activity questionnaire for assessing attainment of physical activity guidelines in youth

    Background: As physical activity is important for health and well-being, it is essential to monitor population prevalence of physical activity. Surveillance is dependent on the use of valid and reliable measurement tools. The PACE+ questionnaire is used globally in youth and has acceptable reliability; however it has not been validated in a European sample. The purpose of this study is to validate this instrument in a sample of 10-18 year old Irish youth. Methods: Participants (n=419, 45.7 % male) completed the PACE+ two-item questionnaire and were asked to wear an Actigraph accelerometer for eight consecutive days. Freedson cut-points were used to estimate moderate to vigorous physical activity from accelerometer counts. Analyses compared self-report and accelerometry data in participants with (1) ≥5 and (2) seven valid accelerometer days. Calculations were performed for the whole sample, and were stratified by sex and school level (primary; post-primary). Results: Spearman correlations between self-reported physical activity levels and accelerometry derived minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day were small (r=0.27; seven valid days) to moderate (r=0.34; ≥5 valid days). Higher correlations were found in older participants (post-primary r=0.39; primary r=0.24) and females (r=0.39; males r=0.27) using ≥5 valid days. The agreement level was high (68-96 %). The accuracy of classifying those not meeting the guidelines (specificity) was moderate to high (59-100 %). Conclusions: The PACE+ self-report instrument has acceptable validity for assessing non-achievement of the adolescent physical activity recommendations. The validity is higher in females and increases with age. The continued use of the tool is recommended and will allow for comparability between studies, tracking of physical activity over time including trends in youth population prevalence

    Strategically using public housing assets could transform our middle suburbs

    ‘Greyfields’ in the Australian context have been defined as those ageing but occupied tracts of inner and middle ring suburbia that are physically, technologically and environmentally failing. The research sought to test the potential of an innovative design based approach to create coordinated precincts in these suburbs involving the coordinated redevelopment of multiple, non-contiguous public housing lots (rather than relying on the ‘default’ option of incremental market based development of in-fill housing and piecemeal selling off of public housing properties). Recent public housing investments (under the Social Housing Initiative) were typically planned with job creation in mind rather than innovative housing outcomes, but innovations were still apparent. Innovations were generally simple such as improvements to parking arrangements and interfaces of private dwellings with common areas and public spaces and arrangements for tenancy mix and social diversity. Innovations were often more apparent when governments partnered with Community Housing Organisations who could access alternative land and funding sources, offer design and delivery expertise and facilitate mixed tenancy outcomes. Innovation also was more likely when there was a ‘champion’ for design quality, relaxation of selected planning controls, and project alignment with existing urban renewal strategies. The Department of Human Services (Victorian Government) was found to have existing housing assets in sufficient number (more than 6500 DHS properties) in well-located areas of Melbourne’s middle suburbs that were clustered in ways broadly suitable for coordinated precinct redevelopment. Preliminary investigations suggest the same in Sydney and Brisbane. The coordinated precinct approach could offer an effective model for redeveloping dispersed public housing assets. Integrated redevelopment can achieve substantial increases in dwelling yield—design scenarios developed in this study delivered two to four times the number of dwellings when compared to business-as-usual dual occupancy outcomes. A precinct design approach is potentially more efficient because it allows for non-uniform, flexible siting of higher density buildings, effective program mixes, efficient parking arrangements and a variety of households and tenure types to be accommodated across a neighbourhood.     CFHTLenS: Co-evolution of galaxies and their dark matter haloes

    Galaxy-galaxy weak lensing is a direct probe of the mean matter distribution around galaxies. The depth and sky coverage of the CFHT Legacy Survey yield statistically significant galaxy halo mass measurements over a much wider range of stellar masses (108.7510^{8.75} to 1011.3M10^{11.3} M_{\odot}) and redshifts (0.2<z<0.80.2 < z < 0.8) than previous weak lensing studies. At redshift z0.5z \sim 0.5, the stellar-to-halo mass ratio (SHMR) reaches a maximum of 4.0±0.24.0\pm0.2 percent as a function of halo mass at 1012.25M\sim 10^{12.25} M_{\odot}. We find, for the first time from weak lensing alone, evidence for significant evolution in the SHMR: the peak ratio falls as a function of cosmic time from 4.5±0.34.5 \pm 0.3 percent at z0.7z \sim 0.7 to 3.4±0.23.4 \pm 0.2 percent at z0.3z \sim 0.3, and shifts to lower stellar mass haloes. These evolutionary trends are dominated by red galaxies, and are consistent with a model in which the stellar mass above which star formation is quenched "downsizes" with cosmic time. In contrast, the SHMR of blue, star-forming galaxies is well-fit by a power law that does not evolve with time. This suggests that blue galaxies form stars at a rate that is balanced with their dark matter accretion in such a way that they evolve along the SHMR locus.     Health-Related Quality of Life and Suicidal Behaviors in Primary Care Patients: Conditional Indirect Effects via Interpersonal Needs and Depressive Symptoms

    Suicide is a public health problem and complex relationships exist between intrapersonal suicide risk factors and interpersonal risk factors. Health-related quality of life (HRQL) may interact with difficulties with interpersonal relationships and psychopathology. We examined thwarted interpersonal needs and depressive symptoms as potential mediators on the association between HRQL and suicidal behaviors. It was hypothesized that thwarted interpersonal needs would mediate the association between HRQL and suicidal behavior, and that this mediating effect would be dependent on the moderating effect of depressive symptoms. It was hypothesized that thwarted interpersonal needs and then depressive symptoms would sequentially mediate the association between HRQL and suicidal behavior. The mediating roles of thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness on the association between HRQL and suicidal behaviors were supported. Moderated-mediation results were not significant. Serial mediations analyses were partially supported. Our findings suggest the importance of considering both interand intrapersonal factors on suicidal behavior

    CFHTLenS: A Weak Lensing Shear Analysis of the 3D-Matched-Filter Galaxy Clusters

    We present the cluster mass-richness scaling relation calibrated by a weak lensing analysis of >18000 galaxy cluster candidates in the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS). Detected using the 3D-Matched-Filter cluster-finder of Milkeraitis et al., these cluster candidates span a wide range of masses, from the small group scale up to 1015M\sim10^{15} M_{\odot}, and redshifts 0.2 z\lesssim z\lesssim 0.9. The total significance of the stacked shear measurement amounts to 54σ\sigma. We compare cluster masses determined using weak lensing shear and magnification, finding the measurements in individual richness bins to yield 1σ\sigma compatibility, but with magnification estimates biased low. This first direct mass comparison yields important insights for improving the systematics handling of future lensing magnification work. In addition, we confirm analyses that suggest cluster miscentring has an important effect on the observed 3D-MF halo profiles, and we quantify this by fitting for projected cluster centroid offsets, which are typically \sim 0.4 arcmin. We bin the cluster candidates as a function of redshift, finding similar cluster masses and richness across the full range up to zz \sim 0.9. We measure the 3D-MF mass-richness scaling relation M200=M0(N200/20)βM_{200} = M_0 (N_{200} / 20)^\beta. We find a normalization M0(2.70.4+0.5)×1013MM_0 \sim (2.7^{+0.5}_{-0.4}) \times 10^{13} M_{\odot}, and a logarithmic slope of β1.4±0.1\beta \sim 1.4 \pm 0.1, both of which are in 1σ\sigma agreement with results from the magnification analysis. We find no evidence for a redshift-dependence of the normalization.
