A Nested PCR technique for direct identification of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) was developed. Two methods for proviral DNA extraction and two pairs of primers were evaluated. The method for amplification was standardized and its specificity was determined by the restriction endonucleases digestion of PCR products. Antibodies specific to FIV were determined using a commercial kit. Thirty heparinized blood samples obtained from cats with and without clinical signs consistent with FIV infection were analyzed. In 17 of the samples antibodies specific to FIV and proviral DNA were detected. The PCR technique proved sensitive and specific. It could be useful in the presence of doubtful serologic results and to detect provirus in cats with recent infections.

Two hundred and sixty faecal samples obtained with rectal swabs from dogs were studied for Campylobacter isolation. The samples were placed on Preston broth and incubated at 43° C for 12 h under a microaerophilicatmosphere. Then, they were seeded on Skirrow agar and incubated under the same conditions for 48 h. Campylobacter species were identified by conventional methods (morphological, biochemical and culturaltest), Lior's biotypes and protein profiles were examined by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, underreducing conditions. The prevalence of thermo-tolerant Campylobacter species was 7.3%. Fifteen out of 19 Campylobacter jejuni biotype II isolates were used in electrophoresis. Strain 1522 was employed asreference strain. Analysis of the protein profiles of the electrophoretic banding patterns presented goodcorrelation with biochemical tests. All isolates presented a protein band greater than 40-46 Kd and minordifferences in mobility of 40-50 Kd. Four strains lacked the flagellin (62-64 Kd band). The fact that proteinelectrophoresis presented heterogeneity among strains of the same species and biotypes reinforces theirimportance as discriminative methods of epidemiological value.Facultad de Ciencias Veterinaria

Two new complexes [Cu(Imz)4Cl2][Cu(Imz)4Cl] 2(2-OH-Hip)2 (1) and [Co(2-OH-Hip)(Imz)3] H2O (2) (with Imz¼Imidazol and 2-OH-Hip¼2-hydroxyhippuric acid) were prepared and characterized. The molecular structures and the solution and solid state behavior of the complexes were investigated. Complex 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21=c with a ¼ 16:880ð1Þ, b ¼ 8:046ð1Þ, c ¼ 24:683ð1Þ A, b ¼ 107:88ð1Þ , and Z ¼ 2, while complex 2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca with a ¼ 11:712ð2Þ, b ¼ 15:741ð4Þ, c ¼ 22:254ð4Þ A, and Z ¼ 8. The [Cu(Imz)4Cl2][Cu(Imz)4Cl]2(2-OH-Hip)2 solid consists in two distinct monomeric Cu(II) complexes: one of them is neutral octahedral [Cu(Imz)4Cl2] and the other, charged square basis pyramida [Cu(Imz)4Cl]þ. The 2-hydroxyhippuric acid, which here acts as a counter ion, is deprotonated at its carboxylic group. Cobalt(III) ion in [Co(2-OH-Hip)(Imz)3] H2O is at the center of an octahedral environment, coordinated to three Imidazol ligands and to a triply deprotonated 2-hydroxyhippuric acid molecule acting as a tridentate ligand. Aqueous solution equilibrium of the quaternary system Cu2þ/2-OH-Hip/Imz/Hþ was studied by potentiometric titrations.Centro de Química Inorgánic

Phylogenetic analysis of the long terminal repeat of feline immunodeficiency viruses from Japan, Argentina and Australia

The nucleotide sequences of the long terminal repeat of five Japanese, five Argentine and three Australian isolates of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) were determined and compared with those of isolates previously described. The results revealed that the Japanese isolates were found to cluster with nucleotide sequence similarity of 95.6%–99.4%. The Australian isolates also clustered with nucleotide sequence similarity of 97.2%–99.4%. The Argentine isolates formed two groups; the LP9 isolate is closely related to the Japanese isolates, whereas the LP1, LP3, LP20 and LP24 isolates are distant from both the Japanese and Australian isolates. From these results, FIV can be divided into three groups, namely: (I) the Californian, Australian and British isolates; (II) the Japanese isolates and one Argentine LP9 isolate; (III) the other Argentine isolates.

One hundred and thirty six canine mammary carcinomas and their satellite lymph nodes were histological and histochemically studied. The aim of the present work was to assess the presence of carcinomatous emboli and the tumour angiogenic activity, the latter through the identification of VEGFR-2 (vascular endothelial growth factor receptor -2) and the counting of microvessels. The relation between the presence of emboli and angiogenesis and its impact on the status of the lymph nodes was established. Significant differences were found between tumours with and without emboli and their ability to cause metastasis in the lymph nodes. The extent of angiogenesis was higher in tumours that had demonstrated carcinomatous emboli and/or metastasis.Sociedad de Ciencias Morfológicas de La Plat
