Environmental risk assessment in a contaminated estuary: an integrated weight of evidence approach as a decision support tool
Environmental risk assessment of complex ecosystems such as estuaries is a challenge, where innovative
and integrated approaches are needed. The present work aimed at developing an innovative integrative
methodology to evaluate in an impacted estuary (the Sado, in Portugal, was taken as case study), the
adverse effects onto both ecosystem and human health. For the purpose, new standardized lines of
evidence based on multiple quantitative data were integrated into a weight of evidence according to a
best expert judgment approach. The best professional judgment for a weight of evidence approach in the
present study was based on the following lines of evidence: i) human contamination pathways; ii)
human health effects: chronic disease; iii) human health effects: reproductive health; iv) human health
effects: health care; v) human exposure through consumption of local agriculture produce; vi) exposure
to contaminated of water wells and agriculture soils; vii) contamination of the estuarine sedimentary
environment (metal and organic contaminants); viii) effects on benthic organisms with commercial
value; and ix) genotoxic potential of sediments. Each line of evidence was then ordinally ranked by levels
of ecological or human health risk, according to a tabular decision matrix and expert judgment. Fifteen
experts scored two fishing areas of the Sado estuary and a control estuarine area, in a scale of increasing
environmental risk and management actions to be taken. The integrated assessment allowed concluding
that the estuary should not be regarded as impacted by a specific toxicant, such as metals and organic
compounds hitherto measured, but by the cumulative risk of a complex mixture of contaminants. The
proven adverse effects on species with commercial value may be used to witness the environmental
quality of the estuarine ecosystem. This method argues in favor of expert judgment and qualitative
assessment as a decision support tool to the integrative management of estuaries. Namely it allows
communicating environmental risk and proposing mitigation measures to local authorities and population
under a holistic perspective as an alternative to narrow single line of evidence approaches, which

The pulsating DA white dwarf star EC 14012-1446: results from four epochs of time-resolved photometry
The pulsating DA white dwarfs are the coolest degenerate stars that undergo
self-driven oscillations. Understanding their interior structure will help to
understand the previous evolution of the star. To this end, we report the
analysis of more than 200 h of time-resolved CCD photometry of the pulsating DA
white dwarf star EC 14012-1446 acquired during four observing epochs in three
different years, including a coordinated three-site campaign. A total of 19
independent frequencies in the star's light variations together with 148
combination signals up to fifth order could be detected. We are unable to
obtain the period spacing of the normal modes and therefore a mass estimate of
the star, but we infer a fairly short rotation period of 0.61 +/- 0.03 d,
assuming the rotationally split modes are l=1. The pulsation modes of the star
undergo amplitude and frequency variations, in the sense that modes with higher
radial overtone show more pronounced variability and that amplitude changes are
always accompanied by frequency variations. Most of the second-order
combination frequencies detected have amplitudes that are a function of their
parent mode amplitudes, but we found a few cases of possible resonantly excited
modes. We point out the complications in the analysis and interpretation of
data sets of pulsating white dwarfs that are affected by combination
frequencies of the form f_A+f_B-f_C intruding into the frequency range of the

Open-circuit dissolution of platinum from the cathode in polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolysers
Platinum is the state-of-the-art catalyst for hydrogen evolution in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolysers; however, its stability has only been characterized to a limited extent in situ. This study measures platinum dissolving from the cathode during intermittent operation of a 3-electrode PEM electrolyser cell, using a differential pulse voltammetry technique that provided detection limits for platinum of less than 2 ng L−1. Water samples were periodically taken during on-off current cycling, and during periods of open-circuit voltage (OCV) platinum dissolution was detected when the cathode potential rose above 0.85 V NHE due to diffusion of oxygen from the anode. This reached a maximum dissolution rate at the highest cathode potential of 1.02 V NHE, and gradually decayed over a 90 h period. The average total amount of platinum dissolved per 90 h OCV period was estimated to be 152 ng cm−2 or 0.005% of the initial electrode catalyst mass. The dissolution mechanism was predicted to be the same as that occurring in PEM fuel cell cathodes, although being kinetically hindered in PEM electrolysers by the slow diffusion of oxygen from the anode to the cathode
Friction and wear behaviour of bacterial cellulose against articular cartilage
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a natural and biocompatible material with unique properties, such as high water holding capacity, ultra-fine fibre network and high strength that makes it an attractive material for the repair of articular cartilage lesions. However, data on the tribological properties of BC is very scarce, particularly if natural articular cartilage is involved in the contact. In this work, unmodified BC pellicles were grown from Gluconacetobacter xylinus in order to be used as tribological samples against bovine articular cartilage (BAC) in the presence of phosphate buffered saline (PBS). The tribological assessment of the sliding pairs was accomplished using reciprocating pin-on-flat tests at 37ºC. The reciprocating sliding frequency and stroke length were kept constant at 1 Hz and 8 mm, respectively. Contact pressures ranging from 0.80 to 2.40 MPa were applied. The friction coefficient evolution was continuously monitored during the tests and the release of total carbohydrates into the lubricating solution was followed by means of the phenol-H2SO4 method as an attempt to evaluate wear losses. The morphology of worn surfaces was characterized by SEM/EDS and the main wear mechanisms were identified. Low friction coefficient values (~ 0.05) combined with the preservation of the mating surfaces (BC and BAC) indicate the potential of BC to be used as artificial cartilage for articular joints.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

Magnetoliposomes based on magnetite nanoparticles
In this work, magnetic nanoparticles of magnetite were prepared by soft chemical methods, using different surfactants as templating media. Diagnosing Stagnant Gas Bubbles in a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Water Electrolyser using Acoustic Emission
The use of acoustic emission as a low-cost, non-destructive, and operando diagnostic tool has been demonstrated for a range of electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices, including polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolysers (PEMWEs) and fuel cells. In this work, an abrupt change in acoustic regime is observed during operation of a PEMWE as the current density is increased from 0.5 to 1.0 A cm^{-2}. This regime change is marked by a sudden drop in the number of acoustic hits, while hit duration, amplitude, and energy increase significantly. It is found that the change in acoustic regime coincides with a significant extension of the stagnant bubble region in the flow channels of the PEMWE, observed with high-speed optical imaging. These results demonstrate that acoustic emission can be used effectively as an operando diagnostic tool to monitor bubble formation (two-phase flow conditions) in PEMWEs, facilitating rapid testing or prototyping, and contributing to operational safety
