Aisteach: Jennifer Walshe, Heritage, and the Invention of the Irish Avant-Garde

Recent debates in heritage and archive studies have centred around the question of intangibility and how best to faithfully conserve and document dynamic cultural practices. This article explores the way in which composer Jennifer Walshe’s project Aisteach, a fictional archive of the Irish avant-garde, interrogates questions of authenticity, exoticisation, commodification, misrepresentation and marginalisation in heritage discourse, both tangible and intangible. Drawing upon art theory, philosophy, heritage and archive studies, it is argued that by contesting the binary underpinning of evaluative cultural heritage discourse, Aisteach instead advances a form of cultural production occupying a liminal space between inclusion and exclusion, past and present, fact and fiction.

Cooperative Gating and Spatial Organization of Membrane Proteins through Elastic Interactions

    Get PDF
Biological membranes are elastic media in which the presence of a transmembrane protein leads to local bilayer deformation. The energetics of deformation allow two membrane proteins in close proximity to influence each other's equilibrium conformation via their local deformations, and spatially organize the proteins based on their geometry. We use the mechanosensitive channel of large conductance (MscL) as a case study to examine the implications of bilayer-mediated elastic interactions on protein conformational statistics and clustering. The deformations around MscL cost energy on the order of 10 kT and extend ~3nm from the protein edge, as such elastic forces induce cooperative gating and we propose experiments to measure these effects. Additionally, since elastic interactions are coupled to protein conformation, we find that conformational changes can severely alter the average separation between two proteins. This has important implications for how conformational changes organize membrane proteins into functional groups within membranes.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 63 references, submitted to PLoS Computational Biolog

The XBOX 360 and Steganography: How Criminals and Terrorists Could Be Going Dark

    Get PDF
Video game consoles have evolved from single-player embedded systems with rudimentary processing and graphics capabilities to multipurpose devices that provide users with parallel functionality to contemporary desktop and laptop computers. Besides offering video games with rich graphics and multiuser network play, today\u27s gaming consoles give users the ability to communicate via email, video and text chat; transfer pictures, videos, and file;, and surf the World-Wide-Web. These communication capabilities have, unfortunately, been exploited by people to plan and commit a variety of criminal activities. In an attempt to cover the digital tracks of these unlawful undertakings, anti-forensic techniques, such as steganography, may be utilized to hide or alter evidence. This paper will explore how criminals and terrorists might be using the Xbox 360 to convey messages and files using steganographic techniques. Specific attention will be paid to the going dark problem and the disjoint between forensic capabilities for analyzing traditional computers and forensic capabilities for analyzing video game consoles. Forensic approaches for examining Microsoft\u27s Xbox 360 will be detailed and the resulting evidentiary capabilities will be discussed. Given the ubiquitous nature of computing, individuals now have nearly 24-7 access to the internet. People are not just going online through traditional means with a PC anymore, they are now frequently using nontraditional devices such as cell phones, smart phones, and gaming consoles. Given the increased use of gaming consoles for online access, there is also an increased use of gaming consoles to commit criminal activity. The digital forensic community has been tasked with creating new approaches for forensically analyzing gaming consoles. In this research paper the authors demonstrate different tools, both commercial and open source, available to forensically analyzing gaming consoles, specifically the Xbox 360. Used Xbox 360 gaming consoles were purchased online through popular auction sites for the purpose of this research. Keywords: Digital Forensics, Identity Theft, Xbox 360 Gaming Console, Cyber Crim

Identity Theft and Used Gaming Consoles: Recovering Personal Information from Xbox 360 Hard Drives

Traditionally, when individuals wanted online access they connected their PCs to the internet. Now, non-traditional devices such as cell phones, smart phones, and gaming consoles serve as common means of online access. Gaming consoles, just like PCs need proper sanitization processes to help fight identity theft. Individuals understand you cannot simply throw away a computer that has your personal data on it without some sort of sanitization process; gaming consoles are no different. Simply returning your console back to “factory state” will not do the trick, you need to take things one step further. In this research paper the authors aim to bring awareness to the gaming public, researchers and practitioners that improperly discarding used consoles without proper sanitization practices can inadvertently release personal data which can result in identity theft. The researchers will demonstrate through a case study how easy it is to steal an identity through a discarded Xbox. Finally, the researchers will demonstrate how gamers can sanitize their game consoles when upgrading their systems to ensure their identity is not at risk when the used device is retired

Wet Corn Gluten Feed Levels for Steam-flaked Corn Based Finishing Diets

A finishing trial was conducted to evaluate level of wet corn gluten feed in steam-flaked corn based finishing diets. Feed efficiency and daily gain were similar among all levels (10, 20, 25, 30, and 35%, DM basis) of inclusion of Sweet BranÂź wet corn gluten feed evaluated in this trial. These data indicate wet corn gluten feed is similar in energy content to steam-flaked corn based on animal performance

Session 2-1-A: A Longitudinal Study of Alberta Electronic Machine Gamblers

Outline of the LLLP What is the LLLP? Launched in 2006 the LLLP is a five age cohort, four data collection wave longitudinal study that examines the incidence and determinants of gambling and problem gambling. The study was guided by four broad research questions: 1.What are the normal patterns of continuity and discontinuity in gambling and problem gambling behavior? 2.What bio-psychological variables and behavior patterns are most predictive of current and future responsible and problem gambling? 3.Are there distinct sub-groupings of gamblers and problem gamblers with different trajectories and predictors? 4.What etiological model of problem gambling is best supported by the longitudinal findings
