AbstractIntroductionSmall cell lung cancer (SCLC) is the most aggressive type of lung cancer. The surgical treatment is possible only in a few and defined occasions. The association between SCLC and a solitary fibrous tumor of pleura (SFTP) is extremely rare.Case presentationA 56 year-old man had a lung lesion (size 16 mm) FDG-avid (SUV 7.9) within upper lobe of right lung. No lymph adenopathy or other distant lesion were found. The pathological results of FNAB showed the presence of malignant cells inconclusive for a definitive diagnosis. Following thoracotomy, the exploration of pleural cavity showed an unexpected lesion (size. 3 cm) originating from parietal pleura and not radiologically seen. The intraoperative diagnosis was solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura. Then, an upper right lobectomy was achieved. The histological findings of the lung tumor diagnosed to be a SCLC (p-stage: T1N0M0). An adjuvant treatment was started. At 20 months after the procedure, no recurrence was found.ConclusionSurgery as part of multimodality treatment may be indicated in the treatment of SCLC in the early stage (T1N0M0). However, before proceeding to attend tumor resection an exploration of pleural cavity is mandatory in order to exclude any pleural involvement

Effects of single or combined water deficit and aphid attack on tomato volatile organic compound (VOC) emission and plant-plant communication

Plants release a broad spectrum of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The composition of the released VOC blend is dependent on the physiological status and, consequently, is affected by biotic and abiotic stresses. Stress-related VOCs can be perceived by different organisms, including natural enemies of herbivores and neighboring plants. Here, the responses of tomato plants (emitters) to single or combined abiotic (water stress) and biotic (aphid attack) stresses, and the effect of VOC released by emitters on neighboring unstressed plants (receivers), have been investigated. Emissions of α-pinene and methyl salicylate from plants exposed to single or combined stress, and of camphene from plants exposed to water or combined stress were significantly higher than in unstressed plants. In receivers, only the release of methyl salicylate increased when companion emitters were stressed. The expression of genes related to VOC biosynthesis and plant defense responses was unaffected or declined in water-stressed emitters, and was generally higher in receivers than in emitters. The gene coding for methyl salicylate biosynthesis was particularly active in aphid-attacked emitters and in receivers that were conditioned by the infested emitters. In addition, VOCs emitted by stressed plants induce VOC emission in unstressed receivers, and this increases attraction of parasitic wasps, which may improve protection against aphid attacks under conditions of reduced water availability

We present an extreme rare case of extramedullary nasal plasmacitoma that arise from nasal septum. The mass surgically removed was analyzed by a pathologist who diagnosed an extramedullary nasal plasmacytoma. The patient did not present systemic involvement. A short cycle of radiotherapy was performed after the surgery. At 9-month follow-up, the patient is recurrence free

A case of multicentric low-grade neuroendocrine breast tumor with an unusual histological pattern

Neuroendocrine features are detectable in carcinomas of the breast either as scattered cells, that are recognized by their expression of neuroendocrine cell markers. Instead, pure breast carcinomas with neuroendocrine features (NEBC) are very rare and represent <1% of all breast cancer. Usually NEBC may be well or poorly differentiated and more frequent in older woman. These tumors showed variable histological pattern but a common feature is represented by expression of neuroendocrine markers. Here we report a case of a primary multicentric low-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast presented because of its rarity and for the unusual tubular and cribriform pattern resembling a well-differentiated conventional breast carcinoma. The tumor was treated with left quadrantectomy with concomitant wide excisional biopsy of other two nodules and lymph node sentinel biopsy. No recurrence was observed during 1-year follow-up. Because of its rarity and variability of morphologic features, there exist diagnostic challenges for pathologists to differentiate primary NEBC to some conventional breast carcinomas and to the breast metastasis from neuroendocrine tumor of the lung or gastrointestinal tract. It is important to be able recognize this tumor in order to avoid potential misdiagnosis and improper management of afflicted patients

The use of cover film with good transmittance to UV radiation could allow the production of fruit and vegetables enriched in these compounds. The influence of different cover films on the content of phenolic compounds, flavonoids and carotenoids was tested in tomato fruits of two commercial cv (Solanum lycopersicum L, cv and cv Optima Caramba). Fruits ripened in the presence of UV radiation showed an enrichment in phenols and flavonoids, with consequent increase of the antioxidant activity, and an opposite trend for the carotenoids. The research also showed virtually no change between fruits ripened in the tunnels installed the year before the trial, suggesting a reduction in the ability of shielding UV during the two seasons

The spread of multidrug resistant (MDR) Salmonella strains, along the poultry supply chain, can represent a relevant threat to human health. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella spp. isolated from poultry meat for human consumption. Between 2019 and 2021, 145 samples were analyzed according to ISO 6579-1:2017. The strains isolated were identified by using biochemical-enzymatic assays and serotyping, according to the Kauffmann-White-Le Minor scheme. The antibiotic susceptibility tests were determined using the Kirby-Bauer method. Forty Salmonella spp. strains were isolated and serotyping showed Salmonella Infantis to be predominant. 80% of the isolated strains were MDR and identified as S. Infantis. This study confirms the circulation of MDR Salmonella isolated from poultry meat and highlights the predominance of the S. Infantis serovar, which represents an emerging risk factor under the One Health holistic approach

Targeted therapy of human glioblastoma via delivery of a toxin through a peptide directed to cell surface nucleolin

Targeted anticancer therapies demand discovery of new cellular targets to be exploited for the delivery of toxic molecules and drugs. In this perspective, in the last few years, nucleolin has been identified as an interesting surface marker to be used for the therapy of glioblastoma. In this study, we investigated whether a synthetic antagonist of cell-surface nucleolin known as N6L, previously reported to decrease both tumour growth and tumour angiogenesis in several cancer cell lines, including glioblastoma cells, as well as endothelial cells proliferation, could be exploited to deliver a protein toxin (saporin) to glioblastoma cells. The pseudopeptide N6L cross-linked to saporin-S6 induced internalization of the toxin inside glioblastoma cancer cells. Our results in vitro demonstrated the effectiveness of this conjugate in inducing cell death, with an ID50 four orders of magnitude lower than that observed for free N6L. Furthermore, the preliminary "in vivo" study demonstrated efficiency in reducing the tumour mass in an orthotopic mouse model of glioblastoma This article is protected by copyright.
