Magnetic relaxation studies on a single-molecule magnet by time-resolved inelastic neutron scattering

Time-resolved inelastic neutron scattering measurements on an array of single-crystals of the single-molecule magnet Mn12ac are presented. The data facilitate a spectroscopic investigation of the slow relaxation of the magnetization in this compound in the time domain.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, REVTEX4, to appear in Appl. Phys.

Real deal or no deal? A comparative analysis of raw milk cheese regulation in Australia and France

Australia’s regulatory framework has resulted in the standardisation of cheese production based on pasteurisation. Up until early 2015, regulations effectively prohibited raw milk cheese-making in Australia and thus stifled artisanal on-farm production. Although the introduction of Food Standards Australia New Zealand Standard 4.2.4 has allowed the production of certain hard, low-moisture raw milk cheeses, the new standard is rigid and does not encourage new entrants into the emerging raw milk cheese consumer market. This article compares the Australian system with the French raw milk cheese regulation and production system, and argues that its approach in encouraging and supporting small farmhouse artisanal traditional raw milk cheese is beneficial to both producer and consumer, and has not resulted in any significant health risks. The Australian approach amounts to a missed opportunity to encourage the emergence of a value-added industry with local and export potential, and is at odds with important movements in food policy, such as recognition of the value of localism and terroir

The Role of Endocarditis, Myocarditis and Pericarditis in Qualitative and Quantitative Data Analysis

The current study is the first scientometric analysis of research activity and output in the field of inflammatory disorders of the heart (endo-, myo- and pericarditis). Scientometric methods are used to compare scientific performance on national and on international scale to identify single areas of research interest. Interest and research productivity in inflammatory diseases of the heart have increased since 1990. The majority of publications about inflammatory heart disorders were published in Western Europe and North America. The United States of America had a leading position in terms of research productivity and quality; half of the most productive authors in this study came from American institutions. The analysis of international cooperation revealed research activity in countries that are less established in the field of inflammatory heart disorder research, such as Brazil, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia. These results indicate that future research of heart inflammation may no longer be influenced predominantly by a small number of countries. Furthermore, this study revealed weaknesses in currently established scientometric parameters (i.e., h-index, impact factor) that limit their suitability as measures of research quality. In this respect, self-citations should be generally excluded from calculations of h-index and impact factor

Use of municipal solid waste and Marble residue in the manufacturing of bricks and roofing tiles

The substitution of ceramic clays for other wastes, in this case municipal solid waste (MSW) and marble residue rich in calcium carbonate, in the production of traditional ceramics could give rise into cost savings due to the utilization and recycling of wastes as a secondary raw material. Total Spanish municipal solidwastes (MSW) production exceeds 21 million tons per year, of which 28.1% and 6.2% are treated in compost and incineration plants, respectively (Tayibi et al., 2007). On the other hand, in Spanish natural stone industry, about 70% of the processing wastes are being disposed locally

Polyethyleneiminomethyl phosphonic acid (PEI-MP) radiolabeled with technetium-99m as a potential new radiopharmaceutical for diagnosis of bladder cancer

    Get PDF
Introduction: The polymer PEI-MP (polyethyleneiminomethyl phosphonic acid) might be labelled with 99mTc. It was initially synthesized for palliative therapy of bone metastases after convenient radiolabelling, however in biodistribution studies performed with different PEI-MP/radionuclides, was obvious that the bladder wall was a target organ [1-3], demonstrating a certain selectivity to bladder cells, and so, to bladder cancer cells. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of 99mTc-PEI-MP for diagnosis of bladder carcinoma, evaluating in vitro and in vivo the biokinetics and biodistribution of 99mTc-PEI-M

Bartonella and Coxiella infective endocarditis in Brazil: molecular evidence from excised valves from a cardiac surgery referral center in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1998 to 2009

    Get PDF
SummaryPCR was used to detect Coxiella burnetii and Bartonella spp in heart valves obtained during the period 1998–2009 from patients operated on for blood culture-negative endocarditis in a cardiac surgery hospital in Brazil. Of the 51 valves tested, 10 were PCR-positive; two were positive for Bartonella and one for C. burnetii

Infection of cardiac implantable electronic devices is one of the most dangerous complications, and the main treatment approach is the removal of cardiac implantable electronic device from the body. We present a case of successful lead removal of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator infection at which right ventricular lead had giant vegetation material. We performed percutaneous debulking of giant right ventricular lead vegetation by percutaneous approach under the realtime intracardiac echocardiography visualization because of the high risk of pulmonary artery embolization of giant infectious material and poor lung and general condition of the patient.
