Maximally Localized States in Quantum Mechanics with a Modified Commutation Relation to All Orders

We construct the states of maximal localization taking into account a modification of the commutation relation between position and momentum operators to all orders of the minimum length parameter. To first order, the algebra we use reproduces the one proposed by Kempft, Mangano and Mann. It is emphasized that a minimal length acts as a natural regulator for the theory, thus eliminating the otherwise ever appearing infinities. So, we use our results to calculate the first correction to the Casimir Effect due to the minimal length. We also discuss some of the physical consequences of the existence of a minimal length, culminating in a proposal to reformulate the very concept of "position measurement"

Quality control and productivity in oak timber - from forest to the primary processing

    Get PDF
Oak timber is valuated for its beauty, good mechanical properties and natural durability and may have multiple uses. An understanding of the factors that affect oak timber quality is essential. It is important to have quality control of physical, mechanical and technological wood characteristics in order to define the better primary processing and end-use. Silviculture may significantly impact wood quality and final stand value. Specific prescriptions will depend on species, site conditions, desired end product and management options. An appropriate silviculture with optimized technological operations allows a well use of wood even with small diameters. Adequate wood classification is required in order to optimize industrial processes and improve product quality. Quality criteria and procedures for round and sawtimber are referenced

Occupational safety & ergonomics training of future industrial engineers: a project-based learning approach

    Get PDF
As industries push for continuous technological innovation, the need to balance work demands and human capabilities and to ensure the workers' safety is now more pressing than ever. Therefore, the training of future industrial engineers must promote the development of different skills, including in the Occupational Safety & Ergonomics (OS&E) domain. Based on this assumption, Project-Based Learning (PjBL) is an active learning methodology where students develop projects in teams as a means of building effective professional skills and knowledge. The current study aims at evaluating the impact of PjBL in effective learning on OS&E, based on the participants' perceptions. PjBL has been applied in the 7th semester of the Integrated MSc in Industrial Engineering and Management at a Portuguese University. In the last years, different companies in the northern region of Portugal have participated in this PjBL, welcoming the students to develop the projects. The current study included a documental analysis that was also developed, considering the final technical reports developed by the students during a scholar semester. In addition, a questionnaire for data collection was developed and applied to the participants. The sample (n=64) included university students who participated in the referred PjBL, their teachers, and the supervisors of the companies where the Project was developed. Globally, the participants' perceptions reveal that the PjBL participants attribute a positive evaluation to this learning methodology, concerning the development of technical (on OS&E) and transversal skills.FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia(UIDB/00319/2020

The coder is a generic device where exist a big types diversity. In base digital systems, the coder is a device that codifies the active input position in a number, normally, binary natural. If we have N inputs they are codified with n bits, N=

Coder and Decoder of Block 3B4B with Auxiliary Channel

    Get PDF
This work presents the coder and decoder of block 3B4B with auxiliary channel. The coder 3B4B converts an input 3 bits word in an output 4 bits word. It transmits an equal number of 1’s and 0’s to provide a DC constant component. It increases the transitions number, improves the system quality and security. The objective is also to improve the system potentialities with an auxiliary channel to monitor the communication (alarm). The main channel is real, but the auxiliary channel is fictitious.
