Generalization of Einstein-Lovelock theory to higher order dilaton gravity
A higher order theory of dilaton gravity is constructed as a generalization
of the Einstein-Lovelock theory of pure gravity. Its Lagrangian contains terms
with higher powers of the Riemann tensor and of the first two derivatives of
the dilaton. Nevertheless, the resulting equations of motion are quasi-linear
in the second derivatives of the metric and of the dilaton. This property is
crucial for the existence of brane solutions in the thin wall limit. At each
order in derivatives the contribution to the Lagrangian is unique up to an
overall normalization. Relations between symmetries of this theory and the
O(d,d) symmetry of the string-inspired models are discussed.Comment: 18 pages, references added, version to be publishe
A Relativistic Mean Field Model for Entrainment in General Relativistic Superfluid Neutron Stars
General relativistic superfluid neutron stars have a significantly more
intricate dynamics than their ordinary fluid counterparts. Superfluidity allows
different superfluid (and superconducting) species of particles to have
independent fluid flows, a consequence of which is that the fluid equations of
motion contain as many fluid element velocities as superfluid species. Whenever
the particles of one superfluid interact with those of another, the momentum of
each superfluid will be a linear combination of both superfluid velocities.
This leads to the so-called entrainment effect whereby the motion of one
superfluid will induce a momentum in the other superfluid. We have constructed
a fully relativistic model for entrainment between superfluid neutrons and
superconducting protons using a relativistic mean field model
for the nucleons and their interactions. In this context there are two notions
of ``relativistic'': relativistic motion of the individual nucleons with
respect to a local region of the star (i.e. a fluid element containing, say, an
Avogadro's number of particles), and the motion of fluid elements with respect
to the rest of the star. While it is the case that the fluid elements will
typically maintain average speeds at a fraction of that of light, the
supranuclear densities in the core of a neutron star can make the nucleons
themselves have quite high average speeds within each fluid element. The
formalism is applied to the problem of slowly-rotating superfluid neutron star
configurations, a distinguishing characteristic being that the neutrons can
rotate at a rate different from that of the protons.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PR
Pointed Hopf Algebras with classical Weyl Groups
We prove that Nichols algebras of irreducible Yetter-Drinfeld modules over
classical Weyl groups supported by are
infinite dimensional, except in three cases. We give necessary and sufficient
conditions for Nichols algebras of Yetter-Drinfeld modules over classical Weyl
groups supported by to be finite dimensional.Comment: Combined with arXiv:0902.4748 plus substantial changes. To appear

Cosmic Vortons and Particle Physics Constraints
We investigate the cosmological consequences of particle physics theories
that admit stable loops of superconducting cosmic string - {\it vortons}.
General symmetry breaking schemes are considered, in which strings are formed
at one energy scale and subsequently become superconducting in a secondary
phase transition at what may be a considerably lower energy scale. We estimate
the abundances of the ensuing vortons, and thereby derive constraints on the
relevant particle physics models from cosmological observations. These
constraints significantly restrict the category of admissible Grand Unified
theories, but are quite compatible with recently proposed effects whereby
superconducting strings may have been formed close to the electroweak phase
transition.Comment: 33 pages, 2 figures, RevTe
Late acceleration and crossing in induced gravity
We study the cosmological evolution on a brane with induced gravity within a
bulk with arbitrary matter content. We consider a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker
brane, invariantly characterized by a six-dimensional group of isometries. We
derive the effective Friedmann and Raychaudhuri equations. We show that the
Hubble expansion rate on the brane depends on the covariantly defined
integrated mass in the bulk, which determines the energy density of the
generalized dark radiation. The Friedmann equation has two branches,
distinguished by the two possible values of the parameter \ex=\pm 1. The
branch with \ex=1 is characterized by an effective cosmological constant and
accelerated expansion for low energy densities. Another remarkable feature is
that the contribution from the generalized dark radiation appears with a
negative sign. As a result, the presence of the bulk corresponds to an
effective negative energy density on the brane, without violation of the weak
energy condition. The transition from a period of domination of the matter
energy density by non-relativistic brane matter to domination by the
generalized dark radiation corresponds to a crossing of the phantom divide

Quasi Regular Polyhedra and Their Duals with Coxeter Symmetries Represented by Quaternions I
In two series of papers we construct quasi regular polyhedra and their duals
which are similar to the Catalan solids. The group elements as well as the
vertices of the polyhedra are represented in terms of quaternions. In the
present paper we discuss the quasi regular polygons (isogonal and isotoxal
polygons) using 2D Coxeter diagrams. In particular, we discuss the isogonal
hexagons, octagons and decagons derived from 2D Coxeter diagrams and obtain
aperiodic tilings of the plane with the isogonal polygons along with the
regular polygons. We point out that one type of aperiodic tiling of the plane
with regular and isogonal hexagons may represent a state of graphene where one
carbon atom is bound to three neighboring carbons with two single bonds and one
double bond. We also show how the plane can be tiled with two tiles; one of
them is the isotoxal polygon, dual of the isogonal polygon. A general method is
employed for the constructions of the quasi regular prisms and their duals in
3D dimensions with the use of 3D Coxeter diagrams.Comment: 22 pages, 16 figure
Alignments of the Dominant Galaxies in Poor Clusters
We have examined the orientations of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in
poor MKW and AWM clusters and find that, like their counterparts in richer
Abell clusters, poor cluster BCGs exhibit a strong propensity to be aligned
with the principal axes of their host clusters as well as the surrounding
distribution of nearby (< 20/h Mpc) Abell clusters. The processes responsible
for dominant galaxy alignments are therefore independent of cluster richness.
We argue that these alignments most likely arise from anisotropic infall of
material into clusters along large-scale filaments.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Growth of a transplantable lymphoma and its modification in mice infected with the inducing virus.
The growth of a transplantable lymphoma was examined in normal mice and in mice previously infected with the lymphoma-inducing virus (ULV). Normal BALB/c mice respond to a footpad injection of X-irradiated lymphoma cells (ULMC) with popliteal lymph node (PLN) enlargement; mice previously infected with ULV do not. 106 viable ULMC injected into the footpads of ULV-infected mice grew progressively, and the animals died with disseminating malignant lymphoma. In contrast, this dose of cells injected into normal animals evoked strong host responses in the foot and draining lymph node, and no progressive growth of the lymphoma occurred. This increased susceptibility of the ULV-infected animals was also observed when ULMC were injected s.c. into the back or i.m. into the calf muscle, but not after s.c. injection of an unrelated 3-methylcholanthrene-induced sarcoma. Resistance to tumour growth after i.v. injection of ULMC is clearly ineffective, since 10 cells can grow and kill the animal, and in this case no increased susceptibility of ULV-infected animals was observed

Measurement of CP Violation at the without Time Ordering or
I derive the expressions for the CP-violating asymmetry arising from
interference between mixed and direct decays in the Upsilon(4S) system, for the
case in which only one of the B decay times is observed, integrating over the
decay time of the other B. I observe that neither the difference of the decay
times Delta t, nor even their time-ordering, need be detected. A technique for
measurement of the CP-violating weak decay parameter sin(2beta) is described
which exploits this observation.Comment: 9 pages postscript, also available through
