Inversion of 2 wavelength Lidar data for cloud properties
The inversion of the lidar equation to derive quantitative properties of the atmosphere has continued to present considerable difficulty. The results of a study in which Klett's procedure was utilized for the analysis of cloud backscatter measurements made simulataneously at two ruby lidar wavelengths (694nm,347nmm) are presented. With one lidar system a cloud is probed at the two wavelength and the backscatter measured simulataneously by separate receivers. As a result two sigma profiles which should differ only because the wavlength dependence of the scattering. Experimental data presented to demonstrate the effects and the implications of the applications of the inversion method will be discussed
Determination of cloud microphysical properties by laser backscattering and extinction measurements
The extinction and backscattering of 514 nm laser radiation in polydisperse water droplet clouds was studied in the laboratory. Three cloud size distributions with modal diameters of 0.02, 5.0, and 12.0 microns were investigated. The relationships between the cloud optical parameters (attentuation coefficient, sigma and volume backscattering coefficient, Beta (sub pi)) and the cloud water content, C, were measured for each size distribution. It was found that a linear relationship exists between sigma and C and between beta (sub pi) and C for cloud water content values up to 3gm/cubic m. The linear relationships obtained, however, have slopes which depend on the droplet size distribution. For a given water content both sigma and beta (sub pi) increase as the modal diameter decreases. The measured data are compared with existing theoretical analyses and discussed in terms of thie application to lidar measurements of atmospheric clouds. It is concluded that the empirical information obtained can serve as a basis for quantitative lidar measurements
The power spectrum of the flux distribution in the Lyman-alpha forest of a Large sample of UVES QSO Absorption Spectra (LUQAS)
The flux power spectra of the Lyman-alpha forest from a sample of 27 QSOs
taken with the high resolution echelle spectrograph UVES on VLT are presented.
We find a similar fluctuation amplitude at the peak of the ``3D'' flux power
spectrum at k ~ 0.03 (km/sec)^(-1) as the study by Croft et al. (2002), in the
same redshift range. The amplitude of the flux power spectrum increases with
decreasing redshift if corrected for the increase in the mean flux level as
expected if the evolution of the flux power spectrum is sensitive to the
gravitational growth of matter density fluctuations. This is in agreement with
the findings of McDonald et al. (2000) at larger redshift. The logarithmic
slope of the "3D" flux power spectrum, P_F(k), at large scales k < 0.03
(km/sec)^(-1), is 1.4 +- 0.3, i.e. 0.3 shallower than that found by Croft et
al. (2002) but consistent within the errors.Comment: 18 pages, 9 PS figures, 6 tables. Note that the k-values of the 1D

Triple-ionised carbon associated with the low-density neutral hydrogen gas at 1.7 < z < 3.3: the integrated N(HI)-N(CIV) relation
From the Voigt profile fitting analysis of 183 intervening CIV systems at 1.7
< z < 3.3 in 23 high-quality UVES/VLT and HIRES/Keck QSO spectra, we find that
a majority of CIV systems (~75%) display a well-characterised scaling relation
between integrated column densities of HI and CIV with a negligible redshift
evolution, when column densities of all the HI and CIV components are
integrated within a given (-150, +150) km/sec range centred at the CIV flux
minimum. The integrated CIV column density N(CIV, sys) increases with N(HI,
sys) at log N(HI, sys) = 14.0--15.5 and log N(CIV, sys) = 11.8--14.0, then
becomes almost independent of N(HI, sys) at log N(HI, sys) > 16, with a large
scatter: at log N(HI, sys) = 14--22, log N(CIV, sys) = C1 / (log(NHI, sys) +
C2) + C3, with C1 = -1.90+0.55, C2 = -14.11+0.19 and C3 = 14.76+0.17,
respectively. The steep (flat) part is dominated by SiIV-free (SiIV-enriched)
CIV systems. Extrapolating the N(HI, sys)-N(CIV, sys) relation implies that
most absorbers with log N(HI) < 14 are virtually CIV-free. The N(HI,
sys)-N(CIV, sys) relation does not hold for individual components, clumps or
the integration velocity range less than +-100 km/sec. It is expected if the
line-of-sight extent of CIV is smaller than HI and N(CIV, sys) decreases more
rapidly than N(HI, sys) at the larger impact parameter, regardless of the
location of the HI+CIV gas in the IGM filaments or in the intervening galactic

Genome-wide association study of behavioural and psychiatric features in human prion disease.
Prion diseases are rare neurodegenerative conditions causing highly variable clinical syndromes, which often include prominent neuropsychiatric symptoms. We have recently carried out a clinical study of behavioural and psychiatric symptoms in a large prospective cohort of patients with prion disease in the United Kingdom, allowing us to operationalise specific behavioural/psychiatric phenotypes as traits in human prion disease. Here, we report exploratory genome-wide association analysis on 170 of these patients and 5200 UK controls, looking for single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with three behavioural/psychiatric phenotypes in the context of prion disease. We also specifically examined a selection of candidate SNPs that have shown genome-wide association with psychiatric conditions in previously published studies, and the codon 129 polymorphism of the prion protein gene, which is known to modify various aspects of the phenotype of prion disease. No SNPs reached genome-wide significance, and there was no evidence of altered burden of known psychiatric risk alleles in relevant prion cases. SNPs showing suggestive evidence of association (P<10(-5)) included several lying near genes previously implicated in association studies of other psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases. These include ANK3, SORL1 and a region of chromosome 6p containing several genes implicated in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. We would encourage others to acquire phenotype data in independent cohorts of patients with prion disease as well as other neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric conditions, to allow meta-analysis that may shed clearer light on the biological basis of these complex disease manifestations, and the diseases themselves
QSO 0130-4021: A third QSO showing a low Deuterium to Hydrogen Abundance Ratio
We have discovered a third quasar absorption system which is consistent with
a low deuterium to hydrogen abundance ratio, D/H = 3.4 times 10^-5. The z ~ 2.8
partial Lyman limit system towards QSO 0130-4021 provides the strongest
evidence to date against large D/H ratios because the H I absorption, which
consists of a single high column density component with unsaturated high order
Lyman series lines, is readily modeled -- a task which is more complex in other
D/H systems. We have obtained twenty-two hours of spectra from the HIRES
spectrograph on the W.M. Keck telescope, which allow a detailed description of
the Hydrogen. We see excess absorption on the blue wing of the H I Lyman alpha
line, near the expected position of Deuterium. However, we find that Deuterium
cannot explain all of the excess absorption, and hence there must be
contamination by additional absorption, probably H I. This extra H I can
account for most or all of the absorption at the D position, and hence D/H = 0
is allowed. We find an upper limit of D/H < 6.7 times 10^-5 in this system,
consistent with the value of D/H ~ 3.4 times 10^-5 deduced towards QSO
1009+2956 and QSO 1937-1009 by Burles and Tytler (1998a, 1998b). This
absorption system shows only weak metal line absorption, and we estimate [Si/H]
< -2.6 -- indicating that the D/H ratio of the system is likely primordial. All
four of the known high redshift absorption line systems simple enough to
provide useful limits on D are consistent with D/H = 3.4 +/- 0.25 times 10^-5.
Conversely, this QSO provides the third case which is inconsistent with much

Spectroscopic Analysis of H I Absorption Line Systems in 40 HIRES Quasars
We list and analyze H I absorption lines at redshifts 2 < z < 4 with column
density (12 < log(N_HI) < 19) in 40 high-resolutional (FWHM = 8.0 km/s) quasar
spectra obtained with the Keck+HIRES. We de-blend and fit all H I lines within
1,000 km/s of 86 strong H I lines whose column densities are log(N_HI/[cm^-2])
> 15. Unlike most prior studies, we use not only Lya but also all visible
higher Lyman series lines to improve the fitting accuracy. This reveals
components near to higher column density systems that can not be seen in Lya.
We list the Voigt profile fits to the 1339 H I components that we found. We
examined physical properties of H I lines after separating them into several
sub-samples according to their velocity separation from the quasars, their
redshift, column density and the S/N ratio of the spectrum. We found two
interesting trends for lines with 12 < log(N_HI) < 15 which are within 200-1000
km/s of systems with log(N_HI) > 15. First, their column density distribution
becomes steeper, meaning relatively fewer high column density lines, at z <
2.9. Second, their column density distribution also becomes steeper and their
line width becomes broader by about 2-3 km/s when they are within 5,000 km/s of

Possible evidence for an inverted temperature-density relation in the intergalactic medium from the flux distribution of the Lyman-alpha forest
We compare the improved measurement of the Lya forest flux probability
distribution at 1.7<z<3.2 presented by Kim et al. (2007) to a large set of
hydrodynamical simulations of the Lya forest with different cosmological
parameters and thermal histories. The simulations are in good agreement with
the observational data if the temperature-density relation for the low density
intergalactic medium (IGM), T=T_0 Delta^{gamma-1}, is either close to
isothermal or inverted (gamma<1). Our results suggest that the voids in the IGM
may be significantly hotter and the thermal state of the low density IGM may be
substantially more complex than is usually assumed at these redshifts. We
discuss radiative transfer effects which alter the spectral shape of ionising
radiation during the epoch of HeII reionisation as a possible physical
mechanism for achieving an inverted temperature-density relation at z~3.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS following

The effect of (strong) discrete absorption systems on the Lyman α forest flux power spectrum
We demonstrate that the Lyman alpha forest flux power spectrum of 'randomized' quasi-stellar object (QSO) absorption spectra is comparable in shape and amplitude to the flux power spectrum of the original observed spectra. In the randomized spectra a random shift in wave-length has been added to the observed absorption lines as identified and fitted with VPFIT. At 0.03 s km(-1) 15 contribute at large scales, k < 0.03 s km(-1). We further show that a fraction of &GSIM; 15 per cent of the mean flux decrement is contributed by strong absorbers at z &GSIM; 2.1. Analysis of the flux power spectrum which use numerical simulations with too few strong absorption systems calibrated with the observed mean flux may underestimate the inferred rms fluctuation amplitude and the slope of the initial dark matter power spectrum
