Geometry of polycrystals and microstructure
We investigate the geometry of polycrystals, showing that for polycrystals
formed of convex grains the interior grains are polyhedral, while for
polycrystals with general grain geometry the set of triple points is small.
Then we investigate possible martensitic morphologies resulting from intergrain
contact. For cubic-to-tetragonal transformations we show that homogeneous
zero-energy microstructures matching a pure dilatation on a grain boundary
necessarily involve more than four deformation gradients. We discuss the
relevance of this result for observations of microstructures involving second
and third-order laminates in various materials. Finally we consider the more
specialized situation of bicrystals formed from materials having two
martensitic energy wells (such as for orthorhombic to monoclinic
transformations), but without any restrictions on the possible microstructure,
showing how a generalization of the Hadamard jump condition can be applied at
the intergrain boundary to show that a pure phase in either grain is impossible

Adaptive FE-BE Coupling for Strongly Nonlinear Transmission Problems with Coulomb Friction
We analyze an adaptive finite element/boundary element procedure for scalar
elastoplastic interface problems involving friction, where a nonlinear
uniformly monotone operator such as the p-Laplacian is coupled to the linear
Laplace equation on the exterior domain. The problem is reduced to a
boundary/domain variational inequality, a discretized saddle point formulation
of which is then solved using the Uzawa algorithm and adaptive mesh refinements
based on a gradient recovery scheme. The Galerkin approximations are shown to
converge to the unique solution of the variational problem in a suitable
product of L^p- and L^2-Sobolev spaces.Comment: 27 pages, 3 figure
Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) and wind farms: a case study in the Dutch North Sea
The rapid increase in development of offshore wind energy in European waters has raised concern for the possible environmental impacts of wind farms. We studied whether harbour porpoise occurrence has been affected by the presence of the Dutch offshore wind farm Egmond aan Zee. This was done by studying acoustic activity of porpoises in the wind farm and in two reference areas using stationary acoustic monitoring (with T-PODs) prior to construction (baseline: June 2003 to June 2004) and during normal operation of the wind farm (operation: April 2007 to April 2009). The results show a strong seasonal pattern, with more activity recorded during winter months. There was also an overall increase in acoustic activity from baseline to operation, in line with a general increase in porpoise abundance in Dutch waters over the last decade. The acoustic activity was significantly higher inside the wind farm than in the reference areas, indicating that the occurrence of porpoises in this area increased as well. The reasons of this apparent preference for the wind farm area are not clear. Two possible causes are discussed: an increased food availability inside the wind farm (reef effect) and/or the absence of vessels in an otherwise heavily trafficked part of the North Sea (sheltering effect
Convergence of simple adaptive Galerkin schemes based on h − h/2 error estimators
We discuss several adaptive mesh-refinement strategies based on (h − h/2)-error estimation. This class of adaptivemethods is particularly popular in practise since it is problem independent and requires virtually no implementational overhead. We prove that, under the saturation assumption, these adaptive algorithms are convergent. Our framework applies not only to finite element methods, but also yields a first convergence proof for adaptive boundary element schemes. For a finite element model problem, we extend the proposed adaptive scheme and prove convergence even if the saturation assumption fails to hold in general
Demonstration of PLOTs from the EuroPLOT project
The EuroPLOT project (2010-2013) has been funded to explore the concept of persuasive design for learning and teaching. It has developed Persuasive Learn-ing Objects and Technologies (PLOTs), manifested in two tools and a set of learning objects that have been tested and evaluated in four different case studies. These PLOTs will be shown in this demonstration, and the participants can try them out and experience for themselves the impact of persuasive technology that is embedded in these PLOTs. This will be one authoring tool (PLOTMaker) and one delivery tool (PLOTLearner). Furthermore, there will be learning objects shown which have been developed for those four different case studies. All of these PLOTs have already been tested and evaluated during case studies with real learners
Direct Detection of Products from the Pyrolysis of 2-Phenethyl Phenyl Ether
The pyrolysis of 2-phenethyl phenyl ether (PPE, C_6H_5C_2H_4OC_6H_5) in a hyperthermal nozzle (300-1350 °C)
was studied to determine the importance of concerted and homolytic unimolecular decomposition pathways.
Short residence times (<100 μs) and low concentrations in this reactor allowed the direct detection of the
initial reaction products from thermolysis. Reactants, radicals, and most products were detected with
photoionization (10.5 eV) time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PIMS). Detection of phenoxy radical, cyclopentadienyl
radical, benzyl radical, and benzene suggest the formation of product by the homolytic scission of
the C_6H_5C_2H_4-OC_6H_5 and C_6H_5CH_2-CH_2OC_6H_5 bonds. The detection of phenol and styrene suggests
decomposition by a concerted reaction mechanism. Phenyl ethyl ether (PEE, C_6H_5OC_2H_5) pyrolysis was also
studied using PIMS and using cryogenic matrix-isolated infrared spectroscopy (matrix-IR). The results for
PEE also indicate the presence of both homolytic bond breaking and concerted decomposition reactions.
Quantum mechanical calculations using CBS-QB3 were conducted, and the results were used with transition
state theory (TST) to estimate the rate constants for the different reaction pathways. The results are consistent
with the experimental measurements and suggest that the concerted retro-ene and Maccoll reactions are
dominant at low temperatures (below 1000 °C), whereas the contribution of the C_6H_5C_2H_4-OC_6H_5 homolytic
bond scission reaction increases at higher temperatures (above 1000 °C)
Nanosecond laser texturing for high friction applications
AbstractA nanosecond pulsed Nd:YAG fibre laser with wavelength of 1064nm was used to texture several different steels, including grade 304 stainless steel, grade 316 stainless steel, Cr–Mo–Al ‘nitriding’ steel and low alloy carbon steel, in order to generate surfaces with a high static friction coefficient. Such surfaces have applications, for example, in large engines to reduce the tightening forces required for a joint or to secure precision fittings easily. For the generation of high friction textures, a hexagonal arrangement of laser pulses was used with various pulse overlaps and pulse energies. Friction testing of the samples suggests that the pulse energy should be high (around 0.8mJ) and the laser pulse overlap should be higher than 50% in order to achieve a static friction coefficient of more than 0.5. It was also noted that laser processing increases the surface hardness of samples which appears to correlate with the increase in friction. Energy-Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) measurements indicate that this hardness is caused by the formation of hard metal-oxides at the material surface

Knowing loved ones' end-of-life health care wishes: Attachment security predicts caregivers' accuracy.
Objective: At times, caregivers make life-and-death decisions for loved ones. Yet very little is known about the factors that make caregivers more or less accurate as surrogate decision makers for their loved ones. Previous research suggests that in low stress situations, individuals with high attachment-related anxiety are attentive to their relationship partners' wishes and concerns, but get overwhelmed by stressful situations. Individuals with high attachment-related avoidance are likely to avoid intimacy and stressful situations altogether. We hypothesized that both of these insecure attachment patterns limit surrogates' ability to process distressing information and should therefore be associated with lower accuracy in the stressful task of predicting their loved ones' end-of-life health care wishes. Method: Older patients visiting a medical clinic stated their preferences toward end-of-life health care in different health contexts, and surrogate decision makers independently predicted those preferences. For comparison purposes, surrogates also predicted patients' perceptions of everyday living conditions so that surrogates' accuracy of their loved ones' perceptions in nonstressful situations could be assessed. Results: Surrogates high on either type of insecure attachment dimension were less accurate in predicting their loved ones' end-of-life health care wishes. It is interesting to note that even though surrogates' attachment-related anxiety was associated with lower accuracy of end-of-life health care wishes of their loved ones, it was associated with higher accuracy in the nonstressful task of predicting their loved ones' everyday living conditions. Conclusions: Attachment orientation plays an important role in accuracy about loved ones' end-of-life health care wishes. Interventions may target emotion regulation strategies associated with insecure attachment orientations
Prophylactic Acupuncture Treatment during Chemotherapy in Patients with Breast Cancer – Results of a Qualitative Study nested in a Randomized Pragmatic Trial
Background: In a randomized controlled trial, compared with standard care alone in breast cancer, acupuncture as a prophylactic treatment did not show better quality of life or fewer side effects of chemotherapy (NCT01727362 [clinicaltrials.gov]). The aim of the qualitative part of this mixed methods study was to better understand the subjective perspectives of the patients regarding quality of life during chemotherapy and the perceived effects of acupuncture.
Methods: In a nested retrospective qualitative study, semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with 5 responders and 5 non-responders (defined by the outcome of the primary parameter FACT-B) who were randomly selected from both study arms. The interviews were digitally recorded, pseudonymized, transcribed, and then deductively and inductively analyzed according to Qualitative Content Analysis using MAXQDA® software.
Results: A total of 20 patients were included in the qualitative part of the study. In both groups, most women stated that their quality of life was surprisingly better than what they had expected before starting the chemotherapy. All patients of the acupuncture group experienced the acupuncture treatments as relaxing and beneficial, mentioning a friendly setting, and empathic attitude of the therapist. Most of these patients stated that the acupuncture treatment reduced chemotherapy-induced side effects. The patients reported that acupuncture was supportive for coping with the disease in a salutogenic way. For all patients, finding strategies to cope with life-threatening cancer and the side effects of chemotherapy was essential, for example, keeping a positive attitude toward life, selecting social contacts, and staying active as much as possible.
Conclusions: Patients in the acupuncture group reported positive effects on psychological and physical well-being after receiving the study intervention. For all patients, having coping strategies for cancer seemed to be more important than reducing side effects. Therefore, further studies should focus more on coping strategies and reducing acute side effects
