Classe de Mathématiques, réalité et communication
This study focuses on an inquiry-based teaching experience in mathematics, with 5th grade students in which we have established a strong connection with reality and intensified student’s ability to communicate, while promoting problem solving and mathematical reasoning. Mathematics lessons are organized into four phases: (i) Launching the task for students; (ii) Development of the task; (iii) Discussion of the task; and (iv) Systematization of mathematical learning. To prepare task discussion, the teacher implements a “gallery of tasks” through which students have their first contact with their colleague’s resolutions: they can ask questions and make comments in the presented sheets. This article presents the results of a lesson on percentages, in which students worked on the task entitled “Discount at Bit- @ - Byte”. The analysis of this task and the results of similar tasks of reality made throughout the school year shows that the inquiry-based teaching allows improvements in mathematics, namely learning concepts and capabilities such as reasoning, communication and problem solving
Pelvic aspiration in the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis)
The pelvis of crocodilians is highly derived in that the pubic bones are isolated from the acetabulum and are attached to the ischia via moveable joints. We examined the possible role of this unusual morphology in lung ventilation by measuring ventilation, abdominal pressure and the electrical activity of several abdominal and pelvic muscles in the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis). We found that the activity of two pelvic muscles, the ischiopubis and ischiotruncus muscles, was correlated with inspiration; these muscles rotate the pubes ventrally and thereby increase abdominal volume. During expiration, contraction of the rectus abdominis and transversus abdominis rotates the pubes dorsally. We suggest that this mechanism facilitates diaphragmatic breathing by creating space for caudal displacement of the viscera during inspiration. Because birds also use a dorso-ventral movement of the pelvis to effect ventilation, some form of pelvic aspiration may be plesiomorphic for archosaurs.</jats:p
Ventilation and gas exchange during treadmill locomotion in the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis)
A number of anatomical characters of crocodilians appear to be inconsistent with their lifestyle as sit-and-wait predators. To address this paradoxical association of characters further, we measured lung ventilation and respiratory gas exchange during walking in American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis). During exercise, ventilation consisted of low-frequency, large-volume breaths. The alligators hyperventilated severely during walking with respect to their metabolic demands. Air convection requirements were among the highest and estimates of lung P(CO2) were among the lowest known in air-breathing vertebrates. Air convection requirements dropped immediately with cessation of exercise. These observations indicate that the ventilation of alligators is not limited by their locomotor movements. We suggest that the highly specialized ventilatory system of modern crocodilians represents a legacy from cursorial ancestors rather than an adaptation to a lifestyle as amphibious sit-and-wait predators.</jats:p
Training practices, speed and distances undertaken by Thoroughbred racehorses in Victoria, Australia
BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal injuries (MSI) in racehorses are commonly due to bone fatigue, a function of the number of cycles (strides) and the magnitude of load applied to the limb. These parameters can be estimated using speed and distance, with greater than 6000 m/month at a gallop (>14 m/s), in combination with canter distances greater than 44,000 m/month, reported to increase fracture risk. Despite their importance, there are limited data on the distances and speeds horses are exposed to during training. OBJECTIVES: Estimate training volume at different speeds undertaken by Australian Thoroughbred racehorses. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Registered trainers (n = 66) in Victoria, Australia were surveyed. Questions were designed to assess the full training workload from initial pre-training to training performed to achieve and maintain race fitness, as well as information on rest periods. Descriptive analyses were stratified by trainer- and horse-level factors, with assessment of variance within and between groups. Cluster analyses were used to identify similar workload intensity groups. RESULTS: Horse-level factors (age, targeted race distance) were associated with workload (younger<older, sprinters<stayers). Trainer categorisation did not influence workload, but there was significant variation in volume of total gallop exercise between trainers (median gallop distance 8000 m/month [IQR 6400-12,000]). Cluster analyses identified four workload programmes (medians): low-intensity (4800 m/month), medium-volume (8000 m/month), medium-volume with a higher proportion of high-speed workouts (12,800 m/month) and high-volume programmes (19,200 m/month), with 23, 50, 17 and 9% of trainers predominately training racehorses under each of the respective programmes. Horses 3-years and older were rested twice yearly for 6.3 (95% CI 5.7, 6.8) weeks, with more experienced trainers resting horses for shorter periods (P = 0.03). MAIN LIMITATIONS: Possible selection bias, subjective reporting of workloads by trainers. CONCLUSIONS: Australian Thoroughbred training programmes include high volumes of galloping with more than half exceeding previously reported risk levels for MSI
