Discovering emerging topics in textual corpora of galleries, libraries, archives, and museums institutions
For some decades now, galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAM) institutions have provided access to information resources in digital format. Although some datasets are openly available, they are often not used to their full potential. Recently, approaches such as the so-called Labs within GLAM institutions promote the reuse of digital collections in innovative and inspiring ways. In this article, we explore a straightforward computational procedure to identify emerging topics in periodical materials such as newspapers, bibliographies, and journals. The method is illustrated in three use cases based on public digital collections. This type of tools are expected to promote further usage by researchers of the digital collections

Evaluating the quality of linked open data in digital libraries
Cultural heritage institutions have recently started to share their metadata as Linked Open Data (LOD) in order to disseminate and enrich them. The publication of large bibliographic data sets as LOD is a challenge that requires the design and implementation of custom methods for the transformation, management, querying and enrichment of the data. In this report, the methodology defined by previous research for the evaluation of the quality of LOD is analysed and adapted to the specific case of Resource Description Framework (RDF) triples containing standard bibliographic information. The specified quality measures are reported in the case of four highly relevant libraries. This work has been partially supported by the ECLIPSE-UA RTI2018-094283-B-C32 (Spanish Ministry of Education and Science)

Breaking boundaries: Exploring gendered challenges and advancing equality for Iranian women careers in tourism.
Política de acceso abierto tomada de: https://v2.sherpa.ac.uk/id/publication/17162While there's growing interest in gender and employment issues in tourism studies, a gap exists when examining the obstacles women face in career pursuits, especially in theocratic societies. Drawing on Risman's gender structure theory, this qualitative study investigates how Iranian women perceive the impact of gender power dynamics on their careers and those of their peers. The findings reveal inhibitory factors affecting women's quest for equal career opportunities, including deeply ingrained societal influences on gender roles, institutionalized gender discrimination, and self-imposed constraints. The findings also demonstrate how gender stereotypes and theocratic structures manifest in the Iranian tourism industry, and how Iranian women working in the tourism sector actively negotiate, resist, and challenge these stereotypes to advance their careers. In a field where most gender-related studies originate from Western perspectives, this study holds particular significance in amplifying the voices of those in non-Western, theocratic societies. The research was funded by the project: Adaptation strategies and alternatives from inland tourism destinations in times of change (ADAPTATUR) (PID2020114186RB-C22), Ministry of Science and Innovation, Government of Spain.

Assisting non-expert speakers of under-resourced languages in assigning stems and inflectional paradigms to new word entries of morphological dictionaries
This paper presents a new method with which to assist individuals with no background in linguistics to create monolingual dictionaries such as those used by the morphological analysers of many natural language processing applications. The involvement of non-expert users is especially critical for under-resourced languages which either lack or cannot afford the recruitment of a skilled workforce. Adding a word to a morphological dictionary usually requires identifying its stem along with the inflection paradigm that can be used in order to generate all the word forms of the new entry. Our method works under the assumption that the average speakers of a language can successfully answer the polar question “is x a valid form of the word w to be inserted?”, where x represents tentative alternative (inflected) forms of the new word w. The experiments show that with a small number of polar questions the correct stem and paradigm can be obtained from non-experts with high success rates. We study the impact of different heuristic and probabilistic approaches on the actual number of questions. This work has been partially funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science & Innovation through project TIN2009-14009-C02-01, by the Spanish Ministry of Economy & Competitiveness through Project TIN2012-32615, by the Generalitat Valenciana through grant ACIF/2010/174 from VALi+d programme, and by the European Commission through Project PIAP-GA-2012-324414 (Abu-MaTran)
Estimation of the real population and its impact on the utilisation of healthcare services in Mediterranean resort regions: an ecological study
BACKGROUND: The demographic structure has a significant influence on the use of healthcare services, as does the size of the population denominators. Very few studies have been published on methods for estimating the real population such as tourist resorts. The lack of information about these problems means there is a corresponding lack of information about the behaviour of populational denominators (the floating population or tourist load) and the effect of this on the use of healthcare services. The objectives of the study were: a) To determine the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) ratio, per person per day, among populations of known size; b) to estimate, by means of this ratio, the real population in an area where tourist numbers are very significant; and c) to determine the impact on the utilisation of hospital emergency healthcare services of the registered population, in comparison to the non-resident population, in two areas where tourist numbers are very significant. METHODS: An ecological study design was employed. We analysed the Healthcare Districts of the Costa del Sol and the island of Menorca. Both are Spanish territories in the Mediterranean region. RESULTS: In the two areas analysed, the correlation coefficient between the MSW ratio and admissions to hospital emergency departments exceeded 0.9, with p < 0.001. On the basis of MSW generation ratios, obtained for a control zone and also measured in neighbouring countries, we estimated the real population. For the summer months, when tourist activity is greatest and demand for emergency healthcare at hospitals is highest, this value was found to be double that of the registered population. CONCLUSION: The MSW indicator, which is both ecological and indirect, can be used to estimate the real population in areas where population levels vary significantly during the year. This parameter is of interest in planning and dimensioning the provision of healthcare services
