    Multicolor Photometry of the Uranus Irregular Satellites Sycorax and Caliban

    We report on accurate BVRI photometry for the two Uranus irregular satellites Sycorax and Caliban. We derive colours, showing that Sycorax is bluer than Caliban. Our data allows us to detect a significant variability in the Caliban's light-curve, which suggests an estimated period of about 3 hours. Despite it is the brighter of the two bodies, Sycorax does not display a strong statistically significant variability.     Selection criteria and robust optimization of a traction PM-Assisted Synchronous Reluctance motor

    In the coming years, the electrification and the deployment of the electric motors in the urban transports will become a more and more widespread reality. The optimization stage of the electric motors usually does not consider in detail the real driving conditions of the car in which the motor is installed. It follows that the actual motor performance in operating points, particularly as regards the torque ripple and the efficiency, might be worse than expected. A robust solution is a required target. This paper deals with the design and optimization of a high-speed permanent-magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motor for traction applications, taking into account both city and highway driving cycles. A procedure is employed in order to evaluate the most representative operating points, which have to be considered when a global optimization is required. An analysis of the solution robustness has been performed. Both results and advantages of the adopted methodology are highlighted

    Contribution of natural milk culture to microbiota, safety and hygiene of raw milk cheese produced in alpine malga

    Processing of alpine milk in malga farms is carried out under conditions that can favor contamination by coliforms, coagulase-positive staphylococci, or pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes. With the aim to improve the hygienic characteristics and safety of cheese produced in four malga farms the use of lyophilized Natural Milk Culture prepared with selected strains was tested.. Two cheesemaking tests were carried out in the same day always starting from the same milk: in the first case following the malga recipe that uses either Natural Whey Culture or without the addition of a starter, in the second one using a Natural Milk Culture. Cheesemaking were carried out in four malga farms located in the west area of Trentino region within the same week. For hygienic and safety evaluation, aerobic colony count, coagulase-positive staphylococci, Escherichia coli, staphylococcal toxins, Listeria monocytogenes, and Salmonella spp, pH and aw were determined in raw milk from evening and morning milking, curd in vat, curd after extraction and two months-ripened cheese. Pathogens or toxins, high values of coagulase- positive staphylococci and E. coli were not found in cheese samples. However, in the curd coagulase-positive staphylococci reached values almost of 5 Log CFU/g in the two malga without starter cultures. The use of Natural Milk Culture reduced E. coli counts. In addition, DNA was extracted from cheese samples and from Natural Milk Culture and the composition of the microbial community determined by Next Generation Sequencing method. The determination of cheese microbial communities demonstrated that the use of Natural Milk Culture exerted different effects in the different malga, in any case preserving bacterial biodiversity

    New water-soluble carbamate ester derivatives of resveratrol

    Low bioavailability severely hinders exploitation of the biomedical potential of resveratrol. Extensive phase-II metabolism and poor water solubility contribute to lowering the concentrations of resveratrol in the bloodstream after oral administration. Prodrugs may provide a solution—protection of the phenolic functions hinders conjugative metabolism and can be exploited to modulate the physicochemical properties of the compound. We report here the synthesis and characterization of carbamate ester derivatives of resveratrol bearing on each nitrogen atom a methyl group and either a methoxy-poly(ethylene glycol)-350 (mPEG-350) or a butyl-glucosyl promoiety conferring high water solubility. Ex vivo absorption studies revealed that the butyl-glucosyl conjugate, unlike the mPEG-350 one, is able to permeate the intestinal wall. In vivo pharmacokinetics confirmed absorption after oral administration and showed that no hydrolysis of the carbamate groups takes place. Thus, sugar groups can be attached to resveratrol to obtain soluble derivatives maintaining to some degree the ability to permeate biomembranes, perhaps by facilitated or active transport

    Proteinuria in focal segmental glomerulosclerosis: role of circulating factors and therapeutic approach.

    The clinical course of primary Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is frequently complicated by nephrotic range proteinuria and progression to renal failure. The high recurrence rate of the disease in transplanted kidney suggests the hypothesis that such patients have a circulating factor that alters glomerular capillary permeability. In recent years some authors found that serum from patients with FSGS increases glomerular permeability to albumin and partially identified the permeability factor (PF) as a protein of 30-50 Kd m.w. The removal of this protein by means of Plasma Exchange (PE) or plasma Immunoadsorption by Protein A (IA) decreased proteinuria. In this report we provide preliminary data about the prevalence of PF and the therapeutic effect of its removal by IA, in 3 pts with recurrence in the transplanted kidney, and 4 with FSGS of the native kidneys. They were resistant to corticosteroids (CS) and immunosuppressive (IS) therapy. 10 IA sessions were performed in 4 weeks: if a remission was achieved IA was gradually tapered. The level of PF in the serum was measured by an in vitro assay to determine the glomerular permeability to albumin. The FSGS was histologically proven in all cases and the degree of evolution was evaluated. PF levels, serum creatinine, daily proteinuria and serum albumin were monitored. The 3 patients with recurrent FSGS had a normalization of the PF levels; 2 had a clinical remission. In FSGS of native kidneys PF was elevated in 3/4 cases; 1 had a clinical remission; 2 with extensive sclerohyalinosis and 1 without PF levels did not improve. Our results confirm that most patients with FSGS have high PF serum levels and suggest that its removal can be beneficial

    Behind the Mirror: Chirality Tunes the Reactivity and Cytotoxicity of Chloropiperidines as Potential Anticancer Agents

    The pressing demand for sustainable antitumor drugs prompted us to investigate 3-chloropiperidines as potential mustard-based anticancer agents. In this study, an explorative set of variously decorated monofunctional 3-chloropiperidines (M-CePs) was efficiently synthesized through a fast and affordable route providing high yields of pure racemates and enantiomers. Consistently with their reactivity, M-CePs were demonstrated to alkylate DNA in vitro. On a panel of carcinoma cell lines, M-CePs exhibited low nanomolar cytotoxicity indexes, which showed their remarkable activity against pancreatic cancer cells and in all cases performed strikingly better than the chlorambucil control. Very interestingly, stereochemistry modulated the activity of M-CePs in unexpected ways, pointing to additional molecular mechanisms of action beyond the direct damage of genomic DNA. This encouraging combination of efficacy and sustainability suggests they are valid candidates for anticancer agent development

    The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to sample the blow microbiome of small cetaceans

    Recent studies describe the use of UAVs in collecting blow samples from large whales to analyze the microbial and viral community in exhaled air. Unfortunately, attempts to collect blow from small cetaceans have not been successful due to their swimming and diving behavior. In order to overcome these limitations, in this study we investigated the application of a specific sampling tool attached to a UAV to analyze the blow from small cetaceans and their respiratory microbiome. Preliminary trials to set up the sampling tool were conducted on a group of 6 bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) under human care, housed at Acquario di Genova, with approximately 1 meter distance between the blowing animal and the tool to obtain suitable samples. The same sampling kit, suspended via a 2 meter rope assembled on a waterproof UAV, flying 3 meters above the animals, was used to sample the blows of 5 wild bottlenose dolphins in the Gulf of Ambracia (Greece) and a sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy), to investigate whether this experimental assembly also works for large whale sampling. In order to distinguish between blow-associated microbes and seawater microbes, we pooled 5 seawater samples from the same area where blow samples\u2019 collection were carried out. The the respiratory microbiota was assessed by using the V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene via Illumina Amplicon Sequencing. The pooled water samples contained more bacterial taxa than the blow samples of both wild animals and the sequenced dolphin maintained under human care. The composition of the bacterial community differed between the water samples and between the blow samples of wild cetaceans and that under human care, but these differences may have been mediated by different microbial communities between seawater and aquarium water. The sperm whale\u2019s respiratory microbiome was more similar to the results obtained from wild bottlenose dolphins. Although the number of samples used in this study was limited and sampling and analyses were impaired by several limitations, the results are rather encouraging, as shown by the evident microbial differences between seawater and blow samples, confirmed also by the meta-analysis carried out comparing our results with those obtained in previous studies. Collecting exhaled air from small cetaceans using drones is a challenging process, both logistically and technically. The success in obtaining samples from small cetacean blow in this study in comparison to previous studies is likely due to the distance the sampling kit is suspended from the drone, which reduced the likelihood that the turbulence of the drone propeller interfered with successfully sampling blow, suggested as a factor leading to poor success in previous studies

    The role of rehabilitation in the management of late-onset Pompe disease: a narrative review of the level of evidence

    Late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD) is characterized by progressive muscle weakness, respiratory muscle dysfunction, and minor cardiac involvement. Although in LOPD, as in other neuromuscular diseases, controlled low impact sub-maximal aerobic exercise and functional ability exercise can improve general functioning and quality of life, as well as respiratory rehabilitation, the bulk of evidence on that is weak and guidelines are lacking. To date, there is no specific focus on rehabilitation issues in clinical recommendations for the care of patients with Pompe disease, and standard practice predominantly follows general recommendation guidelines for neuromuscular diseases. The Italian Association of Myology, the Italian Association of Pulmonologists, the Italian Society of Neurorehabilitation, and the Italian Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, have endorsed a project to formulate recommendations on practical, technical, and, whenever possible, disease-specific guidance on rehabilitation procedures in LOPD, with specific reference to the Italian scenario. In this first paper, we review available evidence on the role of rehabilitation in LOPD patients, particularly addressing the unmet needs in the management of motor and respiratory function for these patients
