    Thank You, Come Again: Examining the Role of Quality and Trust on eCommerce Repurchase Intentions

    As the pertinence of online consumer shopping continues to grow, more and more e-retailers are erecting websites. In this increasingly competitive environment, building customer loyalty and retaining customers is integral to achieving sustained profitability. While one stream of literature has suggested that e-retailers should concentrate on improving quality, another stream has recommended that the focus should be on building trust with customers. This paper represents an early, working attempt to synthesize these parallel streams, investigating how the interplay between three forms of quality (information, system, and service) and trust help to retain customers. Integrating information systems and marketing research, the results of this paper suggest that trust mediates the relationship between each type of quality and both satisfaction and repurchase intentions. Furthermore, of the three types of quality that are examined, service quality engenders the greatest impact on trust, followed by information quality then system quality. The paper concludes with a discussion of this preliminary model as well as directions for the future development of this project

    They Call for Help, But Don\u27t Always Listen: The Development of the User-Help Desk Knowledge Application Model

    The IS help desk function plays a central role in boundary spanning knowledge exchanges within organizations. Help desk employees provide technical support to users in an effort to transfer knowledge and enable users to autonomously apply this knowledge in the future. However, despite their importance, little is known about the factors that affect knowledge application within this context. Adopting interpersonal influence theory, this paper develops a model that examines how dimensions of source credibility - expertise, trustworthiness, and attractiveness impact users’ knowledge application in a help desk environment. The model is tested using a sample of working adults at a large Midwestern hospital who had significant experience requesting help from an IS help desk. Results indicate that all three dimensions of source credibility predict users’ ability to apply the knowledge transferred from a help desk employee. The implications of these results are discussed

    Dietary Plant Sterol Esters Must Be Hydrolyzed to Reduce Intestinal Cholesterol Absorption in Hamsters

    Background: Elevated concentrations of LDL cholesterol are associated with the development of atherosclerosis and therefore are considered an important target for intervention to prevent cardiovascular diseases. The inhibition of cholesterol absorption in the small intestine is an attractive approach to lowering plasma cholesterol, one that is addressed by drug therapy as well as dietary supplementation with plant sterols and plant sterol esters (PSEs). Objective: This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that the cholesterol-lowering effects of PSE require hydrolysis to free sterols (FSs). Methods: Male Syrian hamsters were fed atherogenic diets (AIN-93M purified diet containing 0.12% cholesterol and 8% coconut oil) to which one of the following was added: no PSEs or ethers (control), 5% sterol stearate esters, 5% sterol palmitate esters (PEs), 5% sterol oleate esters (OEs), 5% sterol stearate ethers (STs; to mimic nonhydrolyzable PSE), or 3% FSs plus 2% sunflower oil. The treatments effectively created a spectrum of PSE hydrolysis across which cholesterol metabolism could be compared. Metabolic measurements included cholesterol absorption, plasma and liver lipid concentration, and fecal neutral sterol and bile acid excretion. Results: The STs and the PEs and SEs were poorly hydrolyzed (1.69–4.12%). In contrast,OEs were 88.3% hydrolyzed. The percent hydrolysis was negatively correlated with cholesterol absorption (r=20.85; P \u3c 0.0001) and positively correlated with fecal cholesterol excretion (r = 0.92; P \u3c 0.0001), suggesting that PSE hydrolysis plays a central role in the cholesterol-lowering properties of PSE. Conclusions: Our data on hamsters suggest that PSE hydrolysis and the presence of FSs is necessary to induce an optimum cholesterol-lowering effect and that poorly hydrolyzed PSEs may lower cholesterol through an alternative mechanism than that of competition with cholesterol for micelle incorporation

    Associations between attentional bias and interpretation bias and change in school concerns and anxiety symptoms during the transition from primary to secondary school

    The transition from primary to secondary school is often associated with a period of heightened anxiety and worry. For most children, any feelings of anxiety subside relatively quickly but for a small minority, emotional difficulties can continue into the first year of secondary school and beyond. This study recruited 109 children and measured their anxiety symptoms and school concerns toward the end of primary school and again at the end of their first term of secondary school. We investigated for the first time whether pre-transition measures of attentional and interpretation bias, and the magnitude of change in attentional bias toward and away from threat stimuli were associated with pre- and post-transition measures of anxiety and school concerns, and the change in these measures over time. Over 50% of the current sample exceeded clinical levels of anxiety at pre-transition. However, anxiety symptoms and school concerns had significantly reduced by post-transition. Higher levels of pre-transition anxiety or school concerns, and a greater magnitude of change in attentional bias towards threat stimuli predicted a larger reduction in anxiety symptoms and school concerns across the transition period. A greater interpretation bias toward threat was associated with higher pre-transition anxiety symptoms and school concerns but not post-transition scores, or the change in these scores. While many children experience heightened anxiety prior to school transition, this appears to be largely temporary and self-resolves. Nonetheless, the current findings highlight the importance of monitoring children’s anxiety and concerns, and related cognitive processes during this important transition period

    Greater Strength Drives Difference in Power between Sexes in the Conventional Deadlift Exercise

    Limited research exists comparing sex differences in muscular power. The primary purpose of this research was to determine if differences exist in power and velocity in the conventional deadlift (CDL). A secondary purpose was to examine the relationship among power, velocity, strength, and fat free mass (FFM). Eighteen strength trained athletes with ≥1 year CDL experience (women: n = 9, 29 ± 2 years, 162.3 ± 1.8 cm, 62 ± 2.4 kg, 23.3 ± 3.2 % body fat (%BF); men: n = 9, 29 ± 3 years, 175.6 ± 1.8 cm, 85.5 ± 1.4 kg, 14.8 ± 2.4 %BF), and ≥1.5 one repetition maximum (1-RM) CDL: body mass (BM) ratio (women: 1.6 ± 0.1 1-RM CDL: BM; men: 2.3 ± 0.1 1-RM CDL: BM), performed baseline (body composition, 1-RM CDL) and experimental sessions, in which velocity and power were measured at 30%, 60%, and 90% 1-RM. Repeated measures ANOVA and bivariate correlations were conducted. Men produced higher absolute average and peak power across all loads, but higher average velocity at only 30% 1-RM. When normalized to FFM, men produced higher peak and average power; however, women produced higher peak and average velocities across all loads. FFM and 1-RM were correlated with power. Greater power observed in men is driven by larger muscle mass, which contributes to greater strength

    Baryogenesis from Primordial Blackholes after Electroweak Phase Transition

    Incorporating a realistic model for accretion of ultra-relativistic particles by primordial blackholes (PBHs), we study the evolution of an Einstein-de Sitter universe consisting of PBHs embedded in a thermal bath from the epoch ∼10−33\sim 10^{-33} sec to ∼5×10−9\sim 5\times 10^{-9} sec. In this paper we use Barrow et al's ansatz to model blackhole evaporation in which the modified Hawking temperature goes to zero in the limit of the blackhole attaining a relic state with mass ∼mpl\sim m_{pl}. Both single mass PBH case as well as the case in which blackhole masses are distributed in the range 8×102−3×1058\times 10^2 - 3\times 10^5 gm have been considered in our analysis. Blackholes with mass larger than ∼105\sim 10^5 gm appear to survive beyond the electroweak phase transition and, therefore, successfully manage to create baryon excess via X−XˉX-\bar X emissions, averting the baryon number wash-out due to sphalerons. In this scenario, we find that the contribution to the baryon-to-entropy ratio by PBHs of initial mass mm is given by ∼ϵζ(m/1gm)−1\sim \epsilon \zeta (m/1 {gm})^{-1}, where ϵ\epsilon and ζ\zeta are the CP-violating parameter and the initial mass fraction of the PBHs, respectively. For ϵ\epsilon larger than ∼10−4\sim 10^{-4}, the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe can be attributed to the evaporation of PBHs.Comment: Latex2e file with seven figures included as postscript file
