Regularity of solutions to a fractional elliptic problem with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary data
In this work we study regularity properties of solutions to fractional
elliptic problems with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary data when dealing with
the Spectral Fractional Laplacian
Invariants of Combinatorial Line Arrangements and Rybnikov's Example
Following the general strategy proposed by G.Rybnikov, we present a proof of
his well-known result, that is, the existence of two arrangements of lines
having the same combinatorial type, but non-isomorphic fundamental groups. To
do so, the Alexander Invariant and certain invariants of combinatorial line
arrangements are presented and developed for combinatorics with only double and
triple points. This is part of a more general project to better understand the
relationship between topology and combinatorics of line arrangements.Comment: 27 pages, 2 eps figure
Characterization of periodic cavitation in an optical tweezer
Microscopic vapor explosions or cavitation bubbles can be generated
periodically in an optical tweezer with a microparticle that partially absorbs
at the trapping laser wavelength. In this work we measure the size distribution
and the production rate of cavitation bubbles for microparticles with a
diameter of 3 m using high speed video recording and a fast photodiode. We
find that there is a lower bound for the maximum bubble radius m which can be explained in terms of the microparticle size. More than
of the measured are in the range between 2 and 6 m,
while the same percentage of the measured individual frequencies or
production rates are between 10 and 200 Hz. The photodiode signal yields an
upper bound for the lifetime of the bubbles, which is at most twice the value
predicted by the Rayleigh equation. We also report empirical relations between
, and the bubble lifetimes.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
The valuation of clean spread options: linking electricity, emissions and fuels
The purpose of the paper is to present a new pricing method for clean spread options, and to illustrate its main features on a set of numerical examples produced by a dedicated computer code. The novelty of the approach is embedded in the use of a structural model as opposed to reduced-form models which fail to capture properly the fundamental dependencies between the economic factors entering the production process
Matter-antimatter asymmetry without departure from thermal equilibrium
We explore the possibility of baryogenesis without departure from thermal
equilibrium. A possible scenario is found, though it contains strong
constraints on the size of the violation () effects and on the role
of the (baryon number) nonconserving interactions which are needed for it.Comment: Revtex, 4page
Local distribution and abundance of swimming crabs (Callinectes spp. and Arenaeus cribrarius) on a tropical arid beach
Distribution, abundance, and several population features were studied in Ensenada de La Vela (Venezuela) between 1993 and 1998 as a first step in the assessment of local fisheries of swimming crabs. Arenaeus cribrarius was the most abundant species at the marine foreshore. Callinectes danae prevailed at the estuarine location. Callinectes bocourti was the most abundant species at the offshore. Abundances of A. cribrarius and C. danae fluctuated widely and randomly. Ovigerous females were almost absent. Adults of several species were smaller than previously reported. This study suggests that fisheries based on these swimming crabs probably will be restricted to an artisanal level because abundances appear too low to support industrial exploitation
Soybean root and stem rots caused by soil-borne pathogens are diseases commonly found in soybean fields, and one of the most important causes of crop losses. In the present study, the mycelial sensitivity of Fusarium virguliforme, F. tucumaniae, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Macrophomina phaseolina was evaluated on potato dextrose agar media (25 mL) supplemented with different concentrations of manganese phosphite (MnPhi) diluted in water (0, 25, 37.5, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 800 and 1000 µg/mL). Mycelial growth sensitivity was analyzed using logarithmic linear regression analysis. The MnPhi concentration needed to inhibit 50% of the mycelial growth (IC50) ranged from 105 µg/mL (Fusarium spp.) to 409 µg/mL (M. phaseolina). Sclerotia were completely inhibited at 500 µg/mL. The results of our study represent the first report on the direct in vitro fungicidal/fungistatic action of MnPhi against fungi that are causal agents of soil-borne diseases.Fil: Carmona, Marcelo Anibal. Where is the warm H2 ? A search for H2 emission from disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars
Mid-IR emission lines of H2 are useful probes to determine the mass of warm
gas present in the surface layers of disks. Numerous observations of Herbig
Ae/Be stars (HAeBes) have been performed, but only 2 detections of mid-IR H2
toward HD97048 and AB Aur have been reported. We aim at tracing the warm gas in
the disks of 5 HAeBes with gas-rich environments and physical characteristics
close to those of AB Aur and HD97048, to discuss whether the detections toward
these 2 objects are suggestive of peculiar conditions for the gas. We search
for the H2 S(1) emission line at 17.035 \mu\m with VISIR, and complemented by
CH molecule observations with UVES. We gather the H2 measurements from the
literature to put the new results in context and search for a correlation with
some disk properties. None of the 5 VISIR targets shows evidence for H2
emission. From the 3sigma upper limits on the integrated line fluxes we
constrain the amount of optically thin warm gas to be less than 1.4 M_Jup in
the disk surface layers. There are now 20 HAeBes observed with VISIR and TEXES
instruments to search for warm H2, but only two detections (HD97048 and AB Aur)
were made so far. We find that the two stars with detected warm H2 show at the
same time high 30/13 \mu\m flux ratios and large PAH line fluxes at 8.6 and
11.3 \mu\m compared to the bulk of observed HAeBes and have emission CO lines
detected at 4.7 \mu\m. We detect the CH 4300.3A absorption line toward both
HD97048 and AB Aur with UVES. The CH to H2 abundance ratios that this would
imply if it were to arise from the same component as well as the radial
velocity of the CH lines both suggest that CH arises from a surrounding
envelope, while the detected H2 would reside in the disk. The two detections of
the S(1) line in the disks of HD97048 and AB Aur suggest either peculiar
physical conditions or a particular stage of evolution.Comment: accepted for publication in A&A : 10 pages, 6 figure
