Shear-free perfect fluids with a solenoidal electric curvature
We prove that the vorticity or the expansion vanishes for any shear-free
perfect fluid solution of the Einstein field equations where the pressure
satisfies a barotropic equation of state and the spatial divergence of the
electric part of the Weyl tensor is zero.Comment: 9 page
Shearfree perfect fluids with solenoidal magnetic curvature and a gamma-law equation of state
We show that shearfree perfect fluids obeying an equation of state p=(gamma
-1) mu are non-rotating or non-expanding under the assumption that the spatial
divergence of the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor is zero.Comment: 11 page
Correlations between reflected and transmitted intensity patterns emerging from opaque disordered media
The propagation of monochromatic light through a scattering medium produces
speckle patterns in reflection and transmission, and the apparent randomness of
these patterns prevents direct imaging through thick turbid media. Yet, since
elastic multiple scattering is fundamentally a linear and deterministic
process, information is not lost but distributed among many degrees of freedom
that can be resolved and manipulated. Here we demonstrate experimentally that
the reflected and transmitted speckle patterns are correlated, even for opaque
media with thickness much larger than the transport mean free path, proving
that information survives the multiple scattering process and can be recovered.
The existence of mutual information between the two sides of a scattering
medium opens up new possibilities for the control of transmitted light without
any feedback from the target side, but using only information gathered from the
reflected speckle.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Static circularly symmetric perfect fluid solutions with an exterior BTZ metric
In this work we study static perfect fluid stars in 2+1 dimensions with an
exterior BTZ spacetime. We found the general expression for the metric
coefficients as a function of the density and pressure of the fluid. We found
the conditions to have regularity at the origin throughout the analysis of a
set of linearly independent invariants. We also obtain an exact solution of the
Einstein equations, with the corresponding equation of state , which
is regular at the origin.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, revtex 4. This paper is in honor of Alberto

The extraction of nuclear sea quark distribution and energy loss effect in Drell-Yan experiment
The next-to-leading order and leading order analysis are performed on the
differential cross section ratio from Drell-Yan process. It is found that the
effect of next-to-leading order corrections can be negligible on the
differential cross section ratios as a function of the quark momentum fraction
in the beam proton and the target nuclei for the current Fermilab and future
lower beam proton energy. The nuclear Drell-Yan reaction is an ideal tool to
study the energy loss of the fast quark moving through cold nuclei. In the
leading order analysis, the theoretical results with quark energy loss are in
good agreement with the Fermilab E866 experimental data on the Drell-Yan
differential cross section ratios as a function of the momentum fraction of the
target parton. It is shown that the quark energy loss effect has significant
impact on the Drell-Yan differential cross section ratios. The nuclear
Drell-Yan experiment at current Fermilab and future lower energy proton beam
can not provide us with more information on the nuclear sea quark distribution.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure
Theorems on shear-free perfect fluids with their Newtonian analogues
In this paper we provide fully covariant proofs of some theorems on
shear-free perfect fluids. In particular, we explicitly show that any
shear-free perfect fluid with the acceleration proportional to the vorticity
vector (including the simpler case of vanishing acceleration) must be either
non-expanding or non-rotating. We also show that these results are not
necessarily true in the Newtonian case, and present an explicit comparison of
shear-free dust in Newtonian and relativistic theories in order to see where
and why the differences appear.Comment: 23 pages, LaTeX. Submitted to GR
Dimension in a Radiative Stellar Atmosphere
Dimensional scales are examined in an extended 3+1 Vaidya atmosphere
surrounding a Schwarzschild source. At one scale, the Vaidya null fluid
vanishes and the spacetime contains only a single spherical 2-surface. Both of
these behaviors can be addressed by including higher dimensions in the
spacetime metric.Comment: to appear in Gen. Rel. Gra
32-Channel silicon strip detection module for combined X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometry analysis
A compact detection module for the simultaneous measurement of XRF and XRD in portable analytical applications, in particular in the mining sector, is presented. The detector head is based on 32 silicon strip detectors, fabricated with a low-leakage technology by FBK and readout by two 16-channel low-noise CUBE charge-sensitive amplifiers. The design of the module and its characterization are reported. Multiple configurations are experimentally compared in terms of strip length, spacing, collimation and charge sharing effects. The optimal configuration for a strip length of 6 mm and pitch 0.2 mm is thus identified. It offers an energy resolution of better than 200 eV at 5.9 keV with moderate cooling (−10°C) and peaking time of 14 μs
Taub's plane-symmetric vacuum spacetime revisited
The gravitational properties of the {\em only} static plane-symmetric vacuum
solution of Einstein's field equations without cosmological term (Taub's
solution, for brevity) are presented: some already known properties (geodesics,
weak field limit and pertainment to the Schwarzschild family of spacetimes) are
reviewed in a physically much more transparent way, as well as new results
about its asymptotic structure, possible matchings and nature of the source are
furnished. The main results point to the fact that the solution must be
interpreted as representing the exterior gravitational field due to a {\em
negative} mass distribution, confirming previous statements to that effect in
the literature. Some analogies to Kasner's spatially homogeneous cosmological
model are also referred to.Comment: plain LaTex, four Postscript figure
Extrapolation of Multiplicity distribution in p+p(\bar(p)) collisions to LHC energies
The multiplicity (N_ch) and pseudorapidity distribution (dN_ch/d\eta) of
primary charged particles in p+p collisions at Large Hadron Collider (LHC)
energies of \sqrt(s) = 10 and 14 TeV are obtained from extrapolation of
existing measurements at lower \sqrt(s). These distributions are then compared
to calculations from PYTHIA and PHOJET models. The existing \sqrt(s)
measurements are unable to distinguish between a logarithmic and power law
dependence of the average charged particle multiplicity () on \sqrt(s),
and their extrapolation to energies accessible at LHC give very different
values. Assuming a reasonably good description of inclusive charged particle
multiplicity distributions by Negative Binomial Distributions (NBD) at lower
\sqrt(s) to hold for LHC energies, we observe that the logarithmic \sqrt(s)
dependence of are favored by the models at midrapidity. The dN_ch/d\eta
versus \eta for the existing measurements are found to be reasonably well
described by a function with three parameters which accounts for the basic
features of the distribution, height at midrapidity, central rapidity plateau
and the higher rapidity fall-off. Extrapolation of these parameters as a
function of \sqrt(s) is used to predict the pseudorapidity distributions of
charged particles at LHC energies. dN_ch/d\eta calculations from PYTHIA and
PHOJET models are found to be lower compared to those obtained from the
extrapolated dN_ch/d\eta versus \eta distributions for a broad \eta range.Comment: 11 pages and 13 figures. Substantially revised and accepted for
