Experiencia de innovación docente universitaria en la enseñanza de la hidrología

    Get PDF

Evaluating the impact of dredging strategies at tidal inlets: Performance assessment

    Get PDF
Despite relevant advances achieved in recent years, sediment transport and sedimentation problems at tidal inlets are still worldwide issues to be addressed. Furthermore, dredging strategies are carried out following traditional layouts, such as channel deepening, lasting short periods of time despite the high economic expenditures and the potential environmental impacts. This work proposes a new dredging strategy for tidal inlets and analyzes its morphodynamic evolution by means of numerical modeling. This numerical model, used to perform hydro-morphodynamic simulations, is applied to a highly altered tidal inlet (Punta Umbría inlet, Southern Spain) with a navigational capacity being continuously compromised. After calibrated and tested, the model is applied to different dredging strategies, including channel deepening, littoral drift barrier and shoal removal. Among these strategies, the shoal removal, which is a new soft-engineering strategy, is found to be the most efficient to improve the navigational channel operativity, defined as the percentage of navigable hours per year for different vessel drafts; this operativity improves up to 60% compared to the other strategies. This solution, which reduce the frequency of maintenance interventions and hence the environmental impacts, may be suitable for other inlets with compromised navigational capacities due to the presence of ebb shoals. The relation between the main maritime drivers and the morphodynamic changes is analyzed, concluding that the morphodynamic evolution of the navigational channels is closely related not only to the wave energetic content, but largely to the wave directionality. Finally, the shoal removal also increases the flow velocities at the inlet modifying the stability of the mouth and hampering its long-term closure. The potential environmental impacts derived from the shoal removal are also discussedUnión Europea. Fondos Feder 2007-2013, Project DRAGAPORT G-GI3002/IDI

Beyond Human Interventions on Complex Bays: Effects on Water and Wave Dynamics (Study Case Cádiz Bay, Spain)

    Get PDF
Bays are coastal environments with significant socio-economic importance, which has led to the development of human interventions in their interior that can have an important impact on the water and wave dynamics, which in turn modify their morphodynamics and water renewal capacity. In order to deepen our understanding of these impacts, numerical modeling was used in a bay in southern Spain to analyze the effect of inner harbor expansion and channel deepening, including the baroclinic and wave propagation effects, as well as variations in salinity and temperature. The results show that the deepening of the channel decreases the amplitude and speed of the tidal wave as it propagates through the bay, reducing the effects of friction and increasing the flushing time. The system evolves from convergent to a damping system that can potentially reduce the effects produced by projected sea level rise. In addition, the seasonal variability of salinity and temperature is reduced, increasing the bed shear stresses and resulting in increased turbidity that can affect the biogeochemistry of the bay. Finally, wave heights decrease along the main waterway, although the yearly-average wave energy flux is only slightly modified on the interior beaches of the bay. However, significant variations are observed during storms, which could affect the morphodynamics of these beaches.Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness CTM2017-89531-R CTM2017-82274-R"Programa Iberoamericano de Ciencia y Tecnologia para el Desarrollo", CYTED PROTOCOL 917PTE053

[EN] The health situation has led us to explore new teaching models that were previously complementary and that became essential for our activity. Detected the interest in specific training in oncological cosmetics due to the importance and frequency of consultations in community or hospital pharmacy on this topic, our group provides open access online training courses. In a first stage, a SPOC (Small Private Online Course) was carried out as a pilot course in the Moodle platform of the University of Salamanca, in which the interest in the chosen topic and its usefulness was demonstrated. The analysis of the results confirms the flexibility of this format, adaptable to both virtual teaching and hybrid models. The adequate acquisition of competencies is demonstrated by the 95% of correct answers to the questions in the videos and a final evaluation questionnaire score of ≥7.0. Based on this satisfactory experience (average score of 4.7 out of 5 in the student satisfaction survey) and expanding the contents of the course, a MOOC has been developed on the MiriadaX platform targeted to students, pharmaceutical professionals and other general audience interested in this topic.[ES] La situación sanitaria nos ha llevado a explorar nuevos modelos de docencia que anteriormente eran complementarios y que han resultado imprescindibles para nuestra actividad. [EN] The Objetive an Structured Clinical Assessment (OSCE) is a practice that is widely used to assess various skills and knowledge in a structured manner. It has been put into practice in the evaluation of students from different health professions; specifically, this methodology has been implemented in the degree in Pharmacy at the University of Salamanca, although its implementation could be stressful for students. With the aim of easing the completion of the OSCE both for the first time and in future editions, audiovisual material has been produced both prior to the evaluation and during its development, so that it serves as a teaching guide for students, professors an pharmaceutical professionals involved in the subject Supervised Practice. Thus, these resources allowed both the exposition and comment of the different skills and abilities that students will acquire during their supervised intership period, and also to settlement of the basis and correct possible failures for future calls.[ES] La Evaluación Clínica Objetiva y Estructurada (ECOE) es una práctica que se utiliza ampliamente para evaluar diversas habilidades y conocimientos de manera estructurada. Gutiérrez Millán, C.; Valles Martín, E.; Zarzuelo Castañeda, A. This paper investigates the impact of the bridge-pilling modifications on the tidal flow at the strait of a human-altered mesotidal estuary (Cádiz Bay, Spain). The analysis was accomplished by combining (1) field data of current velocities in a cross-section close to the pile of a recently built bridge, and (2) hydrodynamics results from the calibrated and tested DELFT3D numerical model on the study site. The analysis was focused on bridge piling effects at intratidal scale during neap and spring tides. Semidiurnal (D2), quarti-diurnal (D4) and sixth-diurnal (D6) bands were examined. The ratio of quarter-diurnal to semidiurnal amplitudes (D4/D2) is largest (¿1) near the bottom of the channel due to friction, and the ratio D6/D2 is largest (¿1.5) close to the pile and in the shallowest part of the cross-section, due to internal asymmetry and tidal advective accelerations. Comparing neap and spring tides, the most marked asymmetries are found in the latter. These asymmetries occur around the wake of the pile, alternating from flood to ebb. The location of the bridge pile causes a decrease in the amplitude of D2 (50%), and a phase lag in the tidal wave of 30 min. The D6 amplitude increases up to almost 100% due to distortion of the tidal wave induce by the wake created at the pile. Moreover, the pile reduces about 1 m the depth where the pycnocline is observed. Additionally, the pile can be considered as an obstacle for the sediment flux. These effects can be extrapolated to similar infrastructures, such as wind or wave energy farms, that can potentially modify the estuarine dynamics.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad CTM2017-89531-RJunta de Andalucía - Transformación Económica, Industria, Conocimiento y Universidades A-TEP-88-UGR2

We also thank the staff and researchers of the Agency of Public Works of the Andalusia Regional Government for their dedication and professionalism, and A. Lira for her help during the GIS analysis. The authors are grateful for the comments of two anonymous reviewers who have helped to significantly improve the article.Engineering infrastructures require regular maintenance and/or repair activities that have important social, environmental, and economic impacts. Despite their growing importance, few studies have focused on fully integrated analyses. This work presents a general methodological approach to design databases of engineering maintenance activities for their assessment. This methodology was applied to the case of dredging projects in the ports managed by the Andalusian Regional Government (Spain). The resulting database contains 87 fields of information obtained from the analysis of 70 activities performed between 1993 and 2015. This database is free, public, and available to the scientific community, and it was implemented in PostgreSQL using the PostGIS extension for spatial data; therefore, it can be integrated in a GIS. The assessment of deviations from the initial projects and the comparison between locations enhanced our methodology, which represents a valuable tool not only for scientists and managers to improve the decision-making process when planning future strategies, but also to evaluate the environmental impacts.European Union (EU)Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness PCIN-2017-10
