    This paper studies a distinction that was proposed in previous works between to-tal and partial adjectives. In pairs of adjectives such as safe-dangerous, clean-dirty and healthy-sick, the first (“total”) adjective describes lack of danger, dirt, malady etc., while the second (“partial”) adjective describes the existence of such properties. It is shown that the semantics of adjective phrases with modifiers such as almost, slightly, and completely is sensitive to whether the adjective is total or partial. The interpretation of such modified constructions is accounted for using a novel scale structure for total and partial adjectives. It is proposed that the standard value of a total adjective is always fixed as the lower bound of the corresponding partial adjec-tive. By contrast, the standard value of partial adjectives can take any point on the relative scale. The effects of this theoretical distinction on the behavior of modified constructions are studied in detail, and their ramifications for the semantic theory of adjectives are discussed. Some other phenomena are surveyed that show evidence for total and partial adjectival constructions with various comparatives and exceptive phrases.

    The use of atomic force microscopy in determining the stiffness and adhesion force of human dentin after exposure to bleaching agents

    Introduction: Oxidant bleaching agents may induce several alterations on mineralized teeth tissues. Our aim is to study, at the ultrastructural level, mechanical modifications induced on dentin after exposure to different bleaching agents. Methods: Nanoindentation performed with atomic force microscopy was used to measure changes in dentin stiffness as well as the adhesion force between the tip and the tissue both in intertubular and peritubular dentin. For each specimen, dentin localization, and bleaching agent, 100 independent nanoindentations were performed. Carbamide peroxide (30%) and hydrogen peroxide (35%) were used as bleaching agents. Results: A significant reduction of both stiffness and adhesion force was found for both carbamide and hydrogen peroxide in peritubular and intertubular dentin. Conclusions: The use of bleaching agents led to a significant reduction in dentin local (at the nanoscale) mechanical properties

    Building and breaking a large igneous province: An example from the High Arctic

    The genesis of the Amerasia Basin in the Arctic Ocean has been difficult to discern due to overprint of the Cretaceous High‐Arctic Large Igneous Province (HALIP). Based on detailed analysis of bathymetry data, new Arctic magnetic and gravity compilations, and recently published radiometric and seismic data, we present a revised plate kinematic model of the northernmost Amerasia Basin. We show that the smaller Makarov Basin is formed by rifting and seafloor spreading during the latest Cretaceous (to middle Paleocene). The opening progressively migrated into the Alpha Ridge structure, which was the focus of Early‐to‐Middle Cretaceous HALIP formation, causing breakup of the proto‐Alpha Ridge into the present‐day Alpha Ridge and Alpha Ridge West Plateau. We propose that breakup of the Makarov Basin was triggered by extension between the North America and Eurasian plates and possibly North Pacific plate rollback
