Holmen Skog is one of Sweden's largest forest companies and has its business area from VÀsterbotten down to eastern SmÄland. They find that they have problems recruiting and attracting new forest machine operators to the industry. The task was then to investigate whether this could be due to shift work. This was done in the form of a questionnaire where the questions were directed towards the experience of shift work and psychosocial work environment. The survey was sent out in 2019 for two weeks in March to 54 machine managers, of whom 37 chose to answer (68.5 percent). The results have been worked out during the weeks in April 2019 and showed a large spread in the answers to several of the questions. Most machine operators (89%) state that they have some type of negative side effect due to shift work and many have problems with fatigue (40%). The conclusion of the survey is that the machine operators find it difficult to combine shift work with other things such as leisure activities and family. Many also find that it is poorly paid and that they have too long travel distances to and from work. One shift could be a solution to some of the problems

RISE Research Institutes of Sweden is a group of research and technology organisations. RISE is a leading innovation partner working global cooperation with academia, enterprise and society to create value, growth and competitiveness through research excellence and innovation. In the area of Energy, RISE has developed innovation Roadmaps covering: Energy Efficient Transport Electric Power System Energy Efficient and Smart Buildings Sustainable Thermal Processes Efficient Energy Use in Industry Decarbonisation of Basic Industries These Roadmaps describe development pathways for technologies, non-technical elements (market design, user behaviours, policies, etc.) and key actors that deliver on a plausible, desirable vision for each respective innovation area in 2030. These Roadmaps are intended to support RISE’s strategic planning and development, but should be relevant reading for anyone interested in energy innovation in Sweden
