Low frequency vibration isolation technology for microgravity space experiments
The dynamic acceleration environment observed on Space Shuttle flights to date and predicted for the Space Station has complicated the analysis of prior microgravity experiments and prompted concern for the viability of proposed space experiments requiring long-term, low-g environments. Isolation systems capable of providing significant improvements in this environment exist, but have not been demonstrated in flight configurations. This paper presents a summary of the theoretical evaluation for two one degree-of-freedom (DOF) active magnetic isolators and their predicted response to both direct and base excitations, that can be used to isolate acceleration sensitive microgravity space experiments
Magnetic bearings with zero bias
A magnetic bearing operating without a bias field has supported a shaft rotating at speeds up to 12,000 rpm with the usual four power supplies and with only two. A magnetic bearing is commonly operated with a bias current equal to half of the maximum current allowable in its coils. This linearizes the relation between net force and control current and improves the force slewing rate and hence the band width. The steady bias current dissipates power, even when no force is required from the bearing. The power wasted is equal to two-thirds of the power at maximum force output. The Consequences of Obesity on Trauma, Emergency Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care
The era of the acute care surgeon has arrived and this "new" specialty will be expected to provide trauma care, emergency surgery, and surgical critical care to a variety of patients arriving at their institution. With the exception of practicing bariatric surgeons, many general surgeons have limited experience caring for obese patients. Obese patients manifest unique physiology and pathophysiology, which can influence a surgeon's decision-making process. Following trauma, obese patients sustain different injuries than lean patients and have worse outcomes. Emergency surgery diseases may be difficult to diagnose in the obese patient and obesity is associated with increased complications in the postoperative patient. Caring for an obese patient in the surgical ICU presents a distinctive challenge and may require alterations in care. The following review should act as an overview of the pathophysiology of obesity and how obesity modifies the care of trauma, emergency surgery, and surgical critical care patients
Propulsion Electric Grid Simulator (PEGS) for Future Turboelectric Distributed Propulsion Aircraft
NASA Glenn Research Center, in collaboration with the aerospace industry and academia, has begun the development of technology for a future hybrid-wing body electric airplane with a turboelectric distributed propulsion (TeDP) system. It is essential to design a subscale system to emulate the TeDP power grid, which would enable rapid analysis and demonstration of the proof-of-concept of the TeDP electrical system. This paper describes how small electrical machines with their controllers can emulate all the components in a TeDP power train. The whole system model in Matlab/Simulink was first developed and tested in simulation, and the simulation results showed that system dynamic characteristics could be implemented by using the closed-loop control of the electric motor drive systems. Then we designed a subscale experimental system to emulate the entire power system from the turbine engine to the propulsive fans. Firstly, we built a system to emulate a gas turbine engine driving a generator, consisting of two permanent magnet (PM) motors with brushless motor drives, coupled by a shaft. We programmed the first motor and its drive to mimic the speed-torque characteristic of the gas turbine engine, while the second motor and drive act as a generator and produce a torque load on the first motor. Secondly, we built another system of two PM motors and drives to emulate a motor driving a propulsive fan. We programmed the first motor and drive to emulate a wound-rotor synchronous motor. The propulsive fan was emulated by implementing fan maps and flight conditions into the fourth motor and drive, which produce a torque load on the driving motor. The stator of each PM motor is designed to travel axially to change the coupling between rotor and stator. This feature allows the PM motor to more closely emulate a wound-rotor synchronous machine. These techniques can convert the plain motor system into a unique TeDP power grid emulator that enables real-time simulation performance using hardware-in-the-loop (HIL)
The Universal Phase Space of AdS3 Gravity
We describe what can be called the "universal" phase space of AdS3 gravity,
in which the moduli spaces of globally hyperbolic AdS spacetimes with compact
spatial sections, as well as the moduli spaces of multi-black-hole spacetimes
are realized as submanifolds. The universal phase space is parametrized by two
copies of the Universal Teichm\"uller space T(1) and is obtained from the
correspondence between maximal surfaces in AdS3 and quasisymmetric
homeomorphisms of the unit circle. We also relate our parametrization to the
Chern-Simons formulation of 2+1 gravity and, infinitesimally, to the
holographic (Fefferman-Graham) description. In particular, we obtain a relation
between the generators of quasiconformal deformations in each T(1) sector and
the chiral Brown-Henneaux vector fields. We also relate the charges arising in
the holographic description (such as the mass and angular momentum of an AdS3
spacetime) to the periods of the quadratic differentials arising via the Bers
embedding of T(1)xT(1). Our construction also yields a symplectic map from
T*T(1) to T(1)xT(1) generalizing the well-known Mess map in the compact spatial

Generality of shear thickening in suspensions
Suspensions are of wide interest and form the basis for many smart fluids.
For most suspensions, the viscosity decreases with increasing shear rate, i.e.
they shear thin. Few are reported to do the opposite, i.e. shear thicken,
despite the longstanding expectation that shear thickening is a generic type of
suspension behavior. Here we resolve this apparent contradiction. We
demonstrate that shear thickening can be masked by a yield stress and can be
recovered when the yield stress is decreased below a threshold. We show the
generality of this argument and quantify the threshold in rheology experiments
where we control yield stresses arising from a variety of sources, such as
attractions from particle surface interactions, induced dipoles from applied
electric and magnetic fields, as well as confinement of hard particles at high
packing fractions. These findings open up possibilities for the design of smart
suspensions that combine shear thickening with electro- or magnetorheological

Strong Charge Fluctuations in the Single-Electron Box: A Quantum Monte Carlo Analysis
We study strong electron tunneling in the single-electron box, a small
metallic island coupled to an electrode by a tunnel junction, by means of
quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We obtain results, at arbitrary tunneling
strength, for the free energy of this system and the average charge on the
island as a function of an external bias voltage. In much of the parameter
range an extrapolation to the ground state is possible. Our results for the
effective charging energy for strong tunneling are compared to earlier -- in
part controversial -- theoretical predictions and Monte Carlo simulations
Limiting Carleman weights and anisotropic inverse problems
In this article we consider the anisotropic Calderon problem and related
inverse problems. The approach is based on limiting Carleman weights,
introduced in Kenig-Sjoestrand-Uhlmann (Ann. of Math. 2007) in the Euclidean
case. We characterize those Riemannian manifolds which admit limiting Carleman
weights, and give a complex geometrical optics construction for a class of such
manifolds. This is used to prove uniqueness results for anisotropic inverse
problems, via the attenuated geodesic X-ray transform. Earlier results in
dimension were restricted to real-analytic metrics.Comment: 58 page
