    Karyotypic description of four species of Trigona (Jurine, 1807) (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Meliponini) from the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil

    The genus Trigona contains at least 31 species, but there have been few cytogenetic studies of this group. In this work, four species of Trigona (T. branneri, T. chanchamayoensis, T. hyalinata, and T. recursa) from the municipality of Cuiabá, in the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil, were studied. In all of the species, the females had 2n = 34 chromosomes and the males had n = 17. The C-banding patterns showed that the karyotypes of these species consisted mainly of acrocentric and pseudoacrocentric chromosomes. These cytogenetic findings should useful in future phylogenetic studies of this group

    New cases of supernumerary chromosomes in characiform fishes

    Supernumerary chromosomes were described for five species of Neotropical characiform fishes. These extra chromosomes were small, acrocentric and fully heterochromatic in Leporinus friderici from two different localities as well as in Leporinus sp., but metacentric and fully heterochromatic in Cyphocharax modesta and Prochilodus nigricans. In Characidium cf. zebra, this element was small, acrocentric and euchromatic. GC-rich DNA blocks were observed in the supernumerary chromosome of Leporinus sp. using chromomycin A3. The widespread occurrence of these extra chromosomal elements suggests their independent origins.São descritos os cromossomos supranumerários observados em cinco espécies de peixes pertencentes a quatro famílias distintas de caraciformes neotropicais. Esses cromossomos mostraram-se pequenos, totalmente heterocromáticos e acrocêntricos em Leporinus friderici e Leporinus sp. e metacêntricos e totalmente heterocromáticos em Cyphocharax modesta e Prochilodus nigricans. Em Characidium cf. zebra um pequeno extra acrocêntrico é visto totalmente eucromático. Um pequeno segmento rico em pares de bases GC pôde ser observado no cromossomo extra de Leporinus sp. após a coloração com cromomicina A3. Alguns aspectos relacionados à origem desses cromossomos extras entre os caraciformes são discutidos

    Cheirodontinae constitutes a group of 17 genera and 55 species still poorly studied cytogenetically, being that most data available in the literature is for the Alto Paraná basin. In this study Odontostilbe pequira, Serrapinnus kriegi, Serrapinnus calliurus and Serrapinnus microdon from Alto Paraguay basin was characterized cytogenetically. The modal diploid number 2n=52 found for these species, as well as most of the data cited in the literature, is an evidence of a conservadorism in chromosome number for the group.Cheirodontinae constitui um grupo de 17 gêneros e 55 espécies ainda pouco estudadas citogeneticamente, sendo que a maioria dos dados disponíveis na literatura é da bacia do Alto Paraná. No presente estudo são caracterizadas cromossomicamente as espécies Odontostilbe pequira, Serrapinnus kriegi, Serrapinnus calliurus e Serrapinnus microdon da bacia do Alto Paraguai. O número diplóide modal 2n=52 encontrado para estas espécies, bem como a maioria dos dados citados na literatura, evidencia um conservadorismo do número cromossômico para o grupo
