Has the Naturalistic Fallacy Refutation Truly Defeated Classical Natural Law Theory?

This paper considers and distinguishes two objections which ordinarily are thought to oppose a realistic conception of ethics: G. E. Moore’s naturalistic fallacy and Hume’s law. After having presented both objections, having developed their presuppositions and consequences and having answered each of them, the paper concludes that it is possible to hold today a realistic conception of ethics. It is structured in the style of a disputed question, divided in six articles

Discovery and retrieval of Geographic data using Google

Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Geospatial TechnologiesThe growth of content in the Internet makes the existence of effective ways to retrieve the desired information fundamental. Search engines represent applications that fulfil this need. In these last years it has been clearly increased the number of services and tools to add and use the geographic component of the content published on the World Wide Web, what represents a clear trend towards the so called GeoWeb. This web paradigm promotes the search of content based also in their geographical component. Here is presented a study about the possibilities of using the different services and tools that Google offers to discover and retrieve geographic information. The study is based in the use of Keyhole Markup Language files (KML) to express geographic data and the analysis of their discovery and indexing. This discovery process is done by crawlers and the study tried to obtain objective measures about the time and effectiveness of the process simulating a real case scenario. In the other side the different KML elements that could allocate information and metadata were analyzed. In order to better understand which of these elements are effectively used in the indexing process a test data set composed by KML files containing information in these elements were launched and the obtained results analyzed and commented. With the experiment’s results the use of these services and tools are analyzed as a general solution for Geographic Information Retrieval. Finally some considerations about future studies that could improve these tools usage are exposed

Saint Thomas Aquinas’ Theology and His Commentary on the Book of Psalms

This is a brief commentary of the Spanish bilingual edition of Aquinas’ Commentary to the Book of Psalms, by Carlos Casanova and Enrique Alarcón, with the outstanding introductions to each of its four volumes. It deals with the relevance of Biblical studies for the understanding of Aquinas’ theological work, the hermeneutical tools used by Aquinas when commenting the Book of Psalms, the contemporary representatives of the school of Biblical Thomism and the main lessons a reader could draw from Aquinas’ reading of the Book of Psalms. This is a brief commentary of the Spanish bilingual edition of Aquinas’ Commentary to the Book of Psalms, by Carlos Casanova and Enrique Alarcón, with the outstanding introductions to each of its four volumes. Traditions which converge in Aquinas’ stand on sins of lust contra naturam

The paper holds that in Aquinas’ study of sins against nature converge ostensibly the biblical and the patristic traditions, but also converge tacitly the Greek philosophical and Romanist traditions. It deals with the problem of what belonging to a moral tradition means and refutes the Gadamerian, relavistic answer to this problem. It ends by showing with John Paul II that only a metaphysical, not merely hermeneutical understanding of the tradition is compatible with the Catholic faith.

A critical ethnographic study of the resistance of Midwest Latinx youth: Towards a politics of immigration and education

    Get PDF
This three-year critical ethnographic study explores the lived experiences of Latinx youth in a racist nativist state. Data collected through participant observations, interviews, and artifacts reveals that the culture of schooling and anti-immigration politics contribute to Latinx youth developing ideological hegemony; commonsense ideas about the current social order and deficit ideas about their community and peers. Their participation in a Latinx youth community-youth based organization I call Movimiento La Libertad introduces them to a process of ideological struggle. This process supports the deconstruction of ideological hegemony and the re-construction of counter-hegemonic ideology. The pedagogy is key instrument in this process. I refer to the pedagogy as, a humanizing pedagogy of knowledge. This pedagogy increases their awareness of the history of Latinx youth social activism which encourages and supports their involvement in social movements. However, data shows Latinx youth social activism can be empowering and traumatic. Therefore, I argue for a humanizing pedagogy to include healing practices to address the social, psychological, behavioral, and spiritual trauma triggers during social activism, and support Latinx youth well-being

Ideas, esencias, conceptos y Arte Divino ¿Se puede compatibilizar un aspecto central de la concepción platónica de las Ideas con una metafísica de corte aristotélico?

This paper first expounds the Aristotelian conception of universals. Afterwards, it determines (a) that in the metaphysics of the Stagirite there is place for divine Ideas as archetypes, and (b) which are the relations that exist between things and Ideas. It concludes, in the light of the above, with a reconsideration of the Aristotelian critique of Plato’s theory of anamnesis.

Nonviscous Modes of Viscoelastically Damped Vibrating Systems

Nonviscously damped vibrating systems are characterized by dissipative mechanisms depending on the time history of the response velocity, introduced in the physical models using convolution integrals involving hereditary kernel functions. One of the most used damping viscoelastic models is Biot’s model, whose hereditary functions are assumed to be exponential kernels. The free-motion equations of these types of nonviscous systems lead to a nonlinear eigenvalue problem enclosing certain number of the so-called nonviscous modes with nonoscillatory nature. Traditionally, the nonviscous modes (eigenvalues and eigenvectors) for nonproportional systems have been computed using the state-space approach, computationally expensive. This number of real eigenvalues is directly related to the rank of the damping matrices associated with the exponential kernels. The state-space approach has traditionally been used up to now as the only method to compute the nonviscous modes for nonproportionally damped systems. Motivated by this open problem, we propose in this chapter to describe the available numerical methods for classically damped systems and present the recent methods for nonclassically damped systems. It is shown that the problem of finding the nonviscous modes can be reduced to solve as a set of linear eigenvalue problems. The presented methods are compared through a numerical example
