    Fight and air exposure times of caught and released salmonids from the South Fork Snake River

    Catch-and-release regulations are among the most common types of fishing regulations. In recent years, concerns have arisen regarding the exposure of fish to air during catch-and-release angling. The purpose of our study was to quantify the length of time angled fish were exposed to air by anglers in a typical catch-and-release fishery and relate it to the lengths of time reported to produce negative effects. In total, 312 individual anglers were observed on the South Fork Snake River, Idaho, from May through August 2016. Fight time varied from 1.1 s to 230.0 s, and average fight time was 40.0 s (SD=36.8). Total air exposure times varied from 0.0 s to 91.8 s and averaged 19.3 s (SD=15.0). Though not statistically significant, a trend in reduced fight times was observed when anglers were guided and increased air exposure times when a net was used and a picture was taken. Results of the current study suggest that anglers expose fish to air for periods that are much less than those reported to cause mortality

    Assessment of Cannabidiol and ∆9-Tetrahydrocannabiol in Mouse Models of Medulloblastoma and Ependymoma

    Children with medulloblastoma and ependymoma are treated with a multidisciplinary approach that incorporates surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy; however, overall survival rates for patients with high-risk disease remain unsatisfactory. Data indicate that plant-derived cannabinoids are effective against adult glioblastoma; however, preclinical evidence supporting their use in pediatric brain cancers is lacking. Here we investigated the potential role for ∆9- tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) in medulloblastoma and ependymoma. Dose- dependent cytotoxicity of medulloblastoma and ependymoma cells was induced by THC and CBD in vitro, and a synergistic reduction in viability was observed when both drugs were combined. Mechanistically, cannabinoids induced cell cycle arrest, in part by the production of reactive oxygen species, autophagy, and apoptosis; however, this did not translate to increased survival in orthotopic transplant models despite being well tolerated. We also tested the combination of cannabinoids with the medulloblastoma drug cyclophosphamide, and despite some in vitro synergism, no survival advantage was observed in vivo. Consequently, clinical benefit from the use of cannabinoids in the treatment of high-grade medulloblastoma and ependymoma is expected to be limited. This study emphasizes the importance of preclinical models in validating therapeutic agent efficacy prior to clinical trials, ensuring that enrolled patients are afforded the most promising therapies available

    Herbivores can indirectly affect ecosystem productivity by modifying feedbacks that occur between dominant plants and below-ground properties, especially through altering nutrient availability in soil. The aim of this study was to examine, under controlled conditions, the effect of simulated browsing by large herbivores on the growth characteristics of downy birch (Betula pubescens), a dominant tree species of native regenerating forests in northern Britain, and to determine how effects of browsing on tree growth cascaded through to soil microbial communities, thereby affecting nutrient availability in soil. Downy birch seedlings were grown in mesocosms for 2 years and subjected to simulated browsing in the form of defoliation and clipping treatments. Upon destructive harvest, a number of measures of both tree growth characteristics and soil biological and nutrient properties were made. Clipping of birch trees significantly reduced total root biomass (27%), fine root biomass (29%), coarse root biomass (27%) and above-ground biomass (18%), whereas defoliated trees were significantly shorter than non-defoliated trees. Despite these significant and negative effects of browsing on tree growth, soil biological properties remained largely unaffected, other than rates of N mineralisation, which were greater under defoliated trees. We conclude that other factors, such as herbivore effects on litter quantity and quality which feedback to soil biological properties in the longer-term are more important in determining ecosystem responses to browsing

    Biodiversity benefits of coal mine water remediation schemes for bird life

    Lagoons and reedbeds are established components of mine water treatment systems for iron-rich coal mine drainage. This study coupled modified British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) Breeding Bird Survey monitoring with habitat survey to assess the presence and usage of two UK coal mine water treatment systems by bird species. Over thirty species were documented at the two sites including four red listed, eight amber listed and eighteen green listed species (under the BTO Birds of Conservation Concern designation). There were statistically significant associations of bird group with specific habitat types suggesting that a mosaic of habitats at coal mine treatment systems benefits bird diversity and that these sites may have conservation potential at the landscape level
