Inhibition of histone deacetylase as a treatment for cardiac hypertrophy
The present invention provides for methods of treating and preventing cardiac hypertrophy. Class II HDACs, which are known to participate in regulation of chromatin structure and gene expression, have been shown to have beneficial effects on cardiac hypertrophy. Surprisingly, the present invention demonstrates that HDAC inhibitors inhibit cardiac hypertrophy by inhibiting fetal cardiac gene expression and interfering with sarcomeric organization.Board of Regents, University of Texas Syste
Quantum discord in spin-cluster materials
The total quantum correlation (discord) in Heisenberg dimers is expressed via
the spin-spin correlation function, internal energy, specific heat or magnetic
susceptibility. This allows one to indirectly measure the discord through
neutron scattering, as well as calorimetric or magnetometric experiments. Using
the available experimental data, we found the discord for a number of binuclear
Heisenberg substances with both antiferro- and ferromagnetic interactions. For
the dimerized antiferromagnet copper nitrate Cu(NO_3)_2*2.5H_2O, the three
independent experimental methods named above lead to a discord of approximately
0.2-0.3 bit/dimer at a temperature of 4 K. We also determined the temperature
behavior of discord for hydrated and anhydrous copper acetates, as well as for
the ferromagnetic binuclear copper acetate complex [Cu_2L(OAc)]*6H_2O, where L

AlGaAs heterojunction lasers
The characterization of 8300 A lasers was broadened, especially in the area of beam quality. Modulation rates up to 2 Gbit/sec at output powers of 20 mW were observed, waveform fidelity was fully adequate for low BER data transmission, and wavefront measurements showed that phase aberrations were less than lamda/50. Also, individually addressable arrays of up to ten contiguous diode lasers were fabricated and tested. Each laser operates at powers up to 30 mW CW in single spatial mode. Shifting the operating wavelength of the basic CSP laser from 8300 A to 8650 A was accomplished by the addition of Si to the active region. Output power has reached 100 mW single mode, with excellent far field wave front properties. Operating life is currently approx. 1000 hrs at 35 mW CW. In addition, laser reliability, for operation at both 8300 A and 8650 A, has profited significantly from several developments in the processing procedures
High-power AlGaAs channeled substrate planar diode lasers for spaceborne communications
A high power channeled substrate planar AlGaAs diode laser with an emission wavelength of 8600 to 8800 A was developed. The optoelectronic behavior (power current, single spatial and spectral behavior, far field characteristics, modulation, and astigmatism properties) and results of computer modeling studies on the performance of the laser are discussed. Lifetest data on these devices at high output power levels is also included. In addition, a new type of channeled substrate planar laser utilizing a Bragg grating to stabilize the longitudinal mode was demonstrated. The fabrication procedures and optoelectronic properties of this new diode laser are described
Cavity-enhanced optical Hall effect in two-dimensional free charge carrier gases detected at terahertz frequencies
The effect of a tunable, externally coupled Fabry-P\'{e}rot cavity to
resonantly enhance the optical Hall effect signatures at terahertz frequencies
produced by a traditional Drude-like two-dimensional electron gas is shown and
discussed in this communication. As a result, the detection of optical Hall
effect signatures at conveniently obtainable magnetic fields, for example by
neodymium permanent magnets, is demonstrated. An AlInN/GaN-based high electron
mobility transistor structure grown on a sapphire substrate is used for the
experiment. The optical Hall effect signatures and their dispersions, which are
governed by the frequency and the reflectance minima and maxima of the
externally coupled Fabry-P\'{e}rot cavity, are presented and discussed. Tuning
the externally coupled Fabry-P\'{e}rot cavity strongly modifies the optical
Hall effect signatures, which provides a new degree of freedom for optical Hall
effect experiments in addition to frequency, angle of incidence and magnetic
field direction and strength
Interplay of static and dynamic effects in 6He+ 238U Fusion
We investigate the influence of the neutron halo and the breakup channel in
6He + 238U fusion at near-barrier energies. To include static effects of the
2n-halo in 6He nuclei, we use a single-folding potential obtained from an
appropriate nucleon-238U interaction and a realistic 6He density. Dynamical
effects arising from the breakup process are then included through
coupled-channel calculations. These calculations suggest that static effects
dominate the cross section at energies above the Coulomb barrier, while the
sub-barrier fusion cross section appears to be determined by coupling to the
breakup channel. This last conclusion is uncertain due to the procedure
employed to measure the fusion cross-section.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
Large K-exciton dynamics in GaN epilayers: the non-thermal and thermal regime
We present a detailed investigation concerning the exciton dynamics in GaN
epilayers grown on c-plane sapphire substrates, focussing on the exciton
formation and the transition from the nonthermal to the thermal regime. The
time-resolved kinetics of LO-phonon replicas is used to address the energy
relaxation in the excitonic band. From ps time-resolved spectra we bring
evidence for a long lasting non-thermal excitonic distribution which accounts
for the rst 50 ps. Such a behavior is con rmed in di erent experimental
conditions, both when non-resonant and resonant excitation are used. At low
excitation power density the exciton formation and their subsequent
thermalization is dominated by impurity scattering rather than by acoustic
phonon scattering. The estimate of the average energy of the excitons as a
function of delay after the excitation pulse provides information on the
relaxation time, which describes the evolution of the exciton population to the
