In Canada, historic naval ships are not as plentiful as in the United States but their history is just as rich. Although Canada’s naval tradition is a young one, officially starting with the Naval Act in 1910, the legacy is a lasting one that continues to thrive up to the present with the commissioning of the new City Class Frigates. Canadians have chosen to preserve three of the many ships that saw service in WWII. Two of them, the corvette HMCS Sackville and COS Acadia are in Halifax and the other, the destroyer HMCS Haid, is in Toronto. The post-war vessel HMCS Bras D’Or is also preserved. It is very likely that other ships will be saved in this way with current plans to bring HMCS Fraser to Kingston, Ontario. It is sometimes hard to believe that you can actually still stand on the decks of some of the most famous ships in Canada but there is no doubt about the thrill of such an act once you are aboard. The following photo essay gives you a glimpse into HMCS Haida’s past but to really feel it you should come aboard

How should funders decide what mentoring programs to support? The mentoring field has grown and diversified immensely in recent decades. There are now thousands of mentoring programs, as well as many multi-service initiatives that incorporate elements of mentoring, across the country. Some mentoring models have been rigorously evaluated, while others have yet to be tested at scale. There is, in fact, a rich research base to draw from to determine which types of mentoring make sense for which youth, and under which circumstances. But navigating that research is a challenge for even the most determined funder, policymaker or program leader

Prison Privatization: Driving Influences and Performance Evaluation

    Get PDF
United States conservatism and neoliberalism have created a market for prison privatization. The business of making money from incarcerated bodies is in direct conflict with the goals of the justice system. Driving economic and political forces are examined and used to explain the rising prison-industrial complex. Private prison performance is measured by recidivism, cost, inmate rights, and quality of confinement. This paper suggests that prison privatization must be reformed or abolished to improve the corrections system in the United States
