Researching Organisational Change and Learning: A Narrative Approach

    Get PDF
This paper explores a qualitative research approach to organisational change and learning based on the gathering and reporting of stories. Particular emphasis is placed on reporting research findings in the voices of the organisational actors involved in the research. The paper starts by identifying learning, socialisation and diversity as a context for research and goes on to examine the power relations implicit in organisational learning. A pluralistic approach to the use of storytelling in organisational analysis is discussed and a research process is described. Issues of how research findings are represented are examined as are some unresolved and potentially unresolvable problems with narrative based research

Identification of low order manifolds: Validating the algorithm of Maas and Pope

    Get PDF
The algorithm of Maas and Pope (1992) is presented as a method for identification of invariant reduced-order manifolds for stable systems which exhibit dynamics with a time-scale separation. While this method has been published previously in the literature, theoretical justification for the algorithm was not presented in the original work. Here, it will be shown rigorously that the algorithm correctly identifies the slow manifold. Before the theoretical results are presented, a brief background on the behavior of singularly perturbed systems is presented. The algorithm of Maas and Pope (1992) is then introduced. This method will be applied to two different examples, a distillation column and a two-phase chemical reactor. For each of these examples, the resulting reduced-order description will be compared to other standard methods of producing reduced-order models. In addition, some preliminary thoughts on how this method can be used to form reduced-order models are presented

Immunological parameters in girls with Turner syndrome

    Get PDF
Disturbances in the immune system has been described in Turner syndrome, with an association to low levels of IgG and IgM and decreased levels of T- and B-lymphocytes. Also different autoimmune diseases have been connected to Turner syndrome (45, X), thyroiditis being the most common. Besides the typical features of Turner syndrome (short stature, failure to enter puberty spontaneously and infertility due to ovarian insufficiency) ear problems are common (recurrent otitis media and progressive sensorineural hearing disorder). Levels of IgG, IgA, IgM, IgD and the four IgG subclasses as well as T- and B-lymphocyte subpopulations were investigated in 15 girls with Turners syndrome to examine whether an immunodeficiency may be the cause of their high incidence of otitis media. No major immunological deficiency was found that could explain the increased incidence of otitis media in the young Turner girls
