Visco-elastic regularization and strain softening
In this paper it is intended to verify the capacity of regularization of the numerical
solution of an elasto-plastic problem with linear strain softening. The finite element method
with a displacement approach is used. Drucker-Prager yield criteria is considered. The radial
return method is used for the integration of the elasto-plastic constitutive relations. An elastovisco-
plastic scheme is used to regularize the numerical solution. Two constitutive laws have
been developed and implemented in a FE-program, the first represent the radial return
method applied to Drucker-Prager yield criteria and the second is a time integration
procedure for the Maxwell visco-elastic model. Attention is paid to finite deformations. An
associative plastic flow is considered in the Drucker-Prager elasto-plastic model. The
algorithms are tested in two problems with softening. Figures showing the capability of the
algorithms to regularize the solution are presented
Electromagnetic waves around dilatonic stars and naked singularities
We study the propagation of classical electromagnetic waves on the simplest
four-dimensional spherically symmetric metric with a dilaton background field.
Solutions to the relevant equations are obtained perturbatively in a parameter
which measures the strength of the dilaton field (hence parameterizes the
departure from Schwarzschild geometry). The loss of energy from outgoing modes
is estimated as a back-scattering process against the dilaton background, which
would affect the luminosity of stars with a dilaton field. The radiation
emitted by a freely falling point-like source on such a background is also
studied by analytical and numerical methods.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figur
Scalar field perturbation on six-dimensional ultra-spinning black holes
We have studied the scalar field perturbations on six-dimensional
ultra-spinning black holes. We have numerically calculated the quasinormal
modes of rotating black holes. Our results suggest that such perturbations are
stable.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures; v2:typo corrected; v3:ref. corrected; v4:revise
Ultrarelativistic boost of spinning black rings
We study the D=5 Emparan-Reall spinning black ring under an ultrarelativistic
boost along an arbitrary direction. We analytically determine the resulting
shock pp-wave, in particular for boosts along axes orthogonal and parallel to
the plane of rotation. The solution becomes physically more interesting and
simpler if one enforces equilibrium between the forces on the ring. We also
comment on the ultrarelativistic limit of recently found supersymmetric black
rings with two independent angular momenta. Essential distinct features with
respect to the boosted Myers-Perry black holes are pointed out.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures. v2: added multipole expansions at spatial

Decay of charged scalar field around a black hole: quasinormal modes of R-N, R-N-AdS and dilaton black holes
It is well known that the charged scalar perturbations of the
Reissner-Nordstrom metric will decay slower at very late times than the neutral
ones, thereby dominating in the late time signal. We show that at the stage of
quasinormal ringing, on the contrary, the neutral perturbations will decay
slower for RN, RNAdS and dilaton black holes. The QN frequencies of the nearly
extreme RN black hole have the same imaginary parts (damping times) for charged
and neutral perturbations. An explanation of this fact is not clear but,
possibly, is connected with the Choptuik scaling.Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX, 4 figures, considerable changes made and wrong

Quasinormal modes for the SdS black hole : an analytical approximation scheme
Quasinormal modes for scalar field perturbations of a Schwarzschild-de Sitter
(SdS) black hole are investigated. An analytical approximation is proposed for
the problem. The quasinormal modes are evaluated for this approximate model in
the limit when black hole mass is much smaller than the radius of curvature of
the spacetime. The model mirrors some striking features observed in numerical
studies of time behaviour of scalar perturbations of the SdS black hole. In
particular, it shows the presence of two sets of modes relevant at two
different time scales, proportional to the surface gravities of the black hole
and cosmological horizons respectively. These quasinormal modes are not
complete - another feature observed in numerical studies. Refinements of this
model to yield more accurate quantitative agreement with numerical studies are
discussed. Further investigations of this model are outlined, which would
provide a valuable insight into time behaviour of perturbations in the SdS
spacetime.Comment: 12 pages, revtex, refs added and discussion expanded, version to

Ultraspinning instability of anti-de Sitter black holes
Myers-Perry black holes with a single spin in d>5 have been shown to be
unstable if rotating sufficiently rapidly. We extend the numerical analysis
which allowed for that result to the asymptotically AdS case. We determine
numerically the stationary perturbations that mark the onset of the
instabilities for the modes that preserve the rotational symmetries of the
background. The parameter space of solutions is thoroughly analysed, and the
onset of the instabilities is obtained as a function of the cosmological
constant. Each of these perturbations has been conjectured to represent a
bifurcation point to a new phase of stationary AdS black holes, and this is
consistent with our results.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures. v2: Reference added. Matches published versio
Plasmarings as dual black rings
We construct solutions to the relativistic Navier-Stokes equations that
describe the long wavelength collective dynamics of the deconfined plasma phase
of N=4 Yang Mills theory compactified down to d=3 on a Scherk-Schwarz circle
and higher dimensional generalisations. Our solutions are stationary, axially
symmetric spinning balls and rings of plasma. These solutions, which are dual
to (yet to be constructed) rotating black holes and black rings in
Scherk-Schwarz compactified AdS(5) and AdS(6), and have properties that are
qualitatively similar to those of black holes and black rings in flat five
dimensional supergravity.Comment: 40 pages, 40 figures. (v2) Correction to black brane equation of

Truncated states obtained by iteration
Quantum states of the electromagnetic field are of considerable importance,
finding potential application in various areas of physics, as diverse as solid
state physics, quantum communication and cosmology. In this paper we introduce
the concept of truncated states obtained via iterative processes (TSI) and
study its statistical features, making an analogy with dynamical systems theory
(DST). As a specific example, we have studied TSI for the doubling and the
logistic functions, which are standard functions in studying chaos. TSI for
both the doubling and logistic functions exhibit certain similar patterns when
their statistical features are compared from the point of view of DST. A
general method to engineer TSI in the running-wave domain is employed, which
includes the errors due to the nonidealities of detectors and photocounts.Comment: 10 pages, 22 figure
Quasinormal modes of d-dimensional spherical black holes with a near extreme cosmological constant
We derive an expression for the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbations in
near extreme d-dimensional Schwarzschild-de Sitter and Reissner-Nordstrom-de
Sitter black holes. We show that, in the near extreme limit, the dynamics of
the scalar field is characterized by a Poschl-Teller effective potential. The
results are qualitatively independent of the spacetime dimension and field
mass.Comment: 5 pages, REVTeX4, version to be published in Physical Review
