    Do loyalty cards enhance loyalty in the pharmaceutical sector?

    This paper aims to analyze the influence of the “Portuguese Pharmacies card” (PP card) on the pharmacies’ customers behaviour. It also intends to examine whether marketing stimuli influence consumers’ buying behavior with regard to non-prescription medicines / health and wellness product / pharmaceutical services (NP/HW/PS) and to understand if the consumer social-demographic characteristics influence purchase decisions and customers’ loyalty. The investigation is based on the results obtained through an online survey. Exploratory descriptive analysis, based on a sample of 385 customers, is used to empirically verify the hypothesis under study. The Marketing of stimuli considered in this research include four communication tools: advertising, sales promotions, word of mouth and the sales force. According to the results obtained, the degree of influence attributed to these various communication tools in the buying decision does not differ significantly in terms of socio-demographic categories. On the other hand, the purchase volume of NP/HW/PS is significantly dependent on the influence of advertising and sales promotions in the purchase decision. Furthermore, impulse buying of NP/HW/PS is significantly dependent on the influence of advertising, promotions and WOM. We conclude that the Portuguese Pharmacies card indeed contributes to customer loyalty in the establishments where it is present.     Manifestation of finite temperature size effects in nanogranular magnetic graphite

    In addition to the double phase transition (with the Curie temperatures T_C=300K and T_{Ct}=144K), a low-temperature anomaly in the dependence of the magnetization is observed in the bulk magnetic graphite (with an average granular size of L=10nm), which is attributed to manifestation of the size effects below the quantum temperature. The best fits of the high-temperature data (using the mean-field Curie-Weiss and Bloch expressions) produced reasonable estimates for the model parameters, such as defects mediated effective spin exchange energy J=12meV (which defines the intragranular Curie temperature T_C) and proximity mediated interactions between neighboring grains (through potential barriers created by thin layers of non-magnetic graphite) with energy J_t=exp(-d/s)J=5.8meV (which defines the intergranular Curie temperature T_{Ct}) with d=1.5nm and s=2nm being the intergranular distance and characteristic length, respectively

    A Comment on Quantum Distribution Functions and the OSV Conjecture

    Using the attractor mechanism and the relation between the quantization of H3(M)H^{3}(M) and topological strings on a Calabi Yau threefold MM we define a map from BPS black holes into coherent states. This map allows us to represent the Bekenstein-Hawking-Wald entropy as a quantum distribution function on the phase space H3(M)H^{3}(M). This distribution function is a mixed Husimi/anti-Husimi distribution corresponding to the different normal ordering prescriptions for the string coupling and deviations of the complex structure moduli. From the integral representation of this distribution function in terms of the Wigner distribution we recover the Ooguri-Strominger-Vafa (OSV) conjecture in the region "at infinity" of the complex structure moduli space.     Acoustic horizons for axially and spherically symmetric fluid flow

    We investigate the formation of acoustic horizons for an inviscid fluid moving in a pipe in the case of stationary and axi-symmetric flow. We show that, differently from what is generally believed, the acoustic horizon forms in correspondence of either a local minimum or maximum of the flux tube cross-section. Similarly, the external potential is required to have either a maximum or a minimum at the horizon, so that the external force has to vanish there. Choosing a power-law equation of state for the fluid, PρnP\propto \rho^{n}, we solve the equations of the fluid dynamics and show that the two possibilities are realized respectively for n>1n>-1 and n<1n<-1. These results are extended also to the case of spherically symmetric flow.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    Instability of hyper-compact Kerr-like objects

    Viable alternatives to astrophysical black holes include hyper-compact objects without horizon, such as gravastars, boson stars, wormholes and superspinars. The authors have recently shown that typical rapidly-spinning gravastars and boson stars develop a strong instability. That analysis is extended in this paper to a wide class of horizonless objects with approximate Kerr-like geometry. A detailed investigation of wormholes and superspinars is presented, using plausible models and mirror boundary conditions at the surface. Like gravastars and boson stars, these objects are unstable with very short instability timescales. This result strengthens previous conclusions that observed hyper-compact astrophysical objects with large rotation are likely to be black holes.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures. To be published in CQ
