Random Topologies and the emergence of cooperation: the role of short-cuts
We study in detail the role of short-cuts in promoting the emergence of
cooperation in a network of agents playing the Prisoner's Dilemma Game (PDG).
We introduce a model whose topology interpolates between the one-dimensional
euclidean lattice (a ring) and the complete graph by changing the value of one
parameter (the probability p to add a link between two nodes not already
connected in the euclidean configuration). We show that there is a region of
values of p in which cooperation is largely enhanced, whilst for smaller values
of p only a few cooperators are present in the final state, and for p
\rightarrow 1- cooperation is totally suppressed. We present analytical
arguments that provide a very plausible interpretation of the simulation
results, thus unveiling the mechanism by which short-cuts contribute to promote
(or suppress) cooperation
Giant Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Pleura: An Analysis of Five Patients

This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Background Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) represents a clinical entity rarely encountered, especially in giant forms. Complete surgical resection for giant tumor of pleura is a challenge. The aim of this article is to present five new cases of giant SFTP, and to discuss their clinical characteristics and the treatment strategy of such neoplasms. Methods We performed a retrospective review of the clinical records of five patients who underwent surgery for a huge SFTP ([18 cm in diameter) between 2007 and 2009. Results Four patients were symptomatic. All five patients underwent angiography and embolization of the tumorsupplying vessels within 24 h of surgery. All giant tumors were removed completely by extended postlateral thoracotomy with moderate intraoperative bleeding. Two wedge resections and one lobectomy were performed in three cases where the parenchyma had been encroached. Tumors in three patients were pathologically benign; those in the other two were malignant. The symptoms disappeared in all cases after surgery. Conclusions Complete resection remains the mainstay of cure for giant SFTP. We recommend preoperative angiography and embolization for giant SFTP which can reduce the risk of hemorrhage and can contribute to piecemeal removal for radical excision
Reduction in regulatory T cells in preterm newborns is associated with necrotizing enterocolitis
BackgroundDespite multifactorial pathogenesis, dysregulation of inflammatory immune response may play a crucial role in necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are involved in immune tolerance early in life. We aimed to investigate the predicting role of Tregs in developing NEC in neonates at high risk.MethodsWe studied six newborns with a diagnosis of NEC (cases) in comparison with 52 controls (without NEC). We further classified controls as neonates with feeding intolerance (FI) and neonates without it (FeedTol). The rate of female and male neonates (sex defined as a biological attribute) was similar. We analyzed the blood frequency of Tregs (not overall numbers) at three time points: 0-3 (T0), 7-10 (T1), and 27-30 (T2) days after birth by flow cytometry. Neonates' sex was defined based on the inspection of external genitalia at birth.ResultsWe observed, at T0, a significantly lower frequency of Tregs in NEC cases (p < 0.001) compared with both FI (p < 0.01) and FeedTol controls (p < 0.01). Multivariate analysis reported that the occurrence of NEC was independently influenced by Treg frequency at birth (ss 2.98; p = 0.039).ConclusionTregs frequency and features in the peripheral blood of preterm neonates, early in life, may contribute to identifying neonates at high risk of developing NEC.ImpactRegulatory T cells may play a pivotal role in regulating the immune response in early life. Reduction of Tregs in early life could predispose preterm newborns to necrotizing enterocolitis.Early markers of necrotizing enterocolitis are still lacking. We demonstrated a predicting role of assessment of regulatory T cells in the diagnosis of this gastrointestinal emergency.Early identification of newborns at high risk of necrotizing enterocolitis through measurement of regulatory T cells may guide clinicians in the management of preterm newborns in order to reduce the development of this severe condition
Markov Chain Methods For Analyzing Complex Transport Networks
We have developed a steady state theory of complex transport networks used to
model the flow of commodity, information, viruses, opinions, or traffic. Our
approach is based on the use of the Markov chains defined on the graph
representations of transport networks allowing for the effective network
design, network performance evaluation, embedding, partitioning, and network
fault tolerance analysis. Random walks embed graphs into Euclidean space in
which distances and angles acquire a clear statistical interpretation. Being
defined on the dual graph representations of transport networks random walks
describe the equilibrium configurations of not random commodity flows on
primary graphs. This theory unifies many network concepts into one framework
and can also be elegantly extended to describe networks represented by directed
graphs and multiple interacting networks.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figure
Analysis of the TGFβ functional pathway in epithelial ovarian carcinoma
Epithelial ovarian carcinoma is often diagnosed at an advanced stage of disease and is the leading cause of death from gynaecological neoplasia. The genetic changes that occur during the development of this carcinoma are poorly understood. It has been proposed that IGFIIR, TGFβ1 and TGFβRII act as a functional unit in the TGFβ growth inhibitory pathway, and that somatic loss-of-function mutations in any one of these genes could lead to disruption of the pathway and subsequent loss of cell cycle control. We have examined these 3 genes in 25 epithelial ovarian carcinomas using single-stranded conformational polymorphism analysis and DNA sequence analysis. A total of 3 somatic missense mutations were found in the TGFβRII gene, but none in IGFRII or TGFβ1. An association was found between TGFβRII mutations and histology, with 2 out of 3 clear cell carcinomas having TGFβRII mutations. This data supports other evidence from mutational analysis of the PTEN and β-catenin genes that there are distinct developmental pathways responsible for the progression of different epithelial ovarian cancer histologic subtypes. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co
AGILE Observations of the Gravitational Wave Event GW150914
We report the results of an extensive search in the AGILE data for a
gamma-ray counterpart of the LIGO gravitational wave event GW150914. Currently
in spinning mode, AGILE has the potential of covering with its gamma-ray
instrument 80 % of the sky more than 100 times a day. It turns out that AGILE
came within a minute from the event time of observing the accessible GW150914
localization region. Interestingly, the gamma-ray detector exposed about 65 %
of this region during the 100 s time intervals centered at -100 s and +300 s
from the event time. We determine a 2-sigma flux upper limit in the band 50 MeV
- 10 GeV, obtained
about 300 s after the event. The timing of this measurement is the fastest ever
obtained for GW150914, and significantly constrains the electromagnetic
emission of a possible high-energy counterpart. We also carried out a search
for a gamma-ray precursor and delayed emission over timescales ranging from
minutes to days: in particular, we obtained an optimal exposure during the
interval -150 / -30 s. In all these observations, we do not detect a
significant signal associated with GW150914. We do not reveal the weak
transient source reported by Fermi-GBM 0.4 s after the event time. However,
even though a gamma-ray counterpart of the GW150914 event was not detected, the
prospects for future AGILE observations of gravitational wave sources are

The AMMA mulid network for aerosol characterization in West Africa
Three ground based portable low power consumption microlidars (MULID) have
been built and deployed at three remote sites in Banizoumbou (Niger), Cinzana
(Mali) and M'Bour (Senegal) in the framework of the African Monsoon
Multidisciplinary Analyses (AMMA) project for the characterization of aerosols
optical properties. A description of the instrument and a discussion of the
data inversion method, including a careful analysis of measurement
uncertainties (systematic and statistical errors) are presented. Some case
studies of typical lidar profiles observed over the Banizoumbou site during
2006 are shown and discussed with respect to the AERONET 7-day
back-trajectories and the biomass burning emissions from the Combustion
Emission database for the AMMA campaign
Co-evolution of density and topology in a simple model of city formation
We study the influence that population density and the road network have on
each others' growth and evolution. We use a simple model of formation and
evolution of city roads which reproduces the most important empirical features
of street networks in cities. Within this framework, we explicitely introduce
the topology of the road network and analyze how it evolves and interact with
the evolution of population density. We show that accessibility issues -pushing
individuals to get closer to high centrality nodes- lead to high density
regions and the appearance of densely populated centers. In particular, this
model reproduces the empirical fact that the density profile decreases
exponentially from a core district. In this simplified model, the size of the
core district depends on the relative importance of transportation and rent

Background model systematics for the Fermi GeV excess
The possible gamma-ray excess in the inner Galaxy and the Galactic center
(GC) suggested by Fermi-LAT observations has triggered a large number of
studies. It has been interpreted as a variety of different phenomena such as a
signal from WIMP dark matter annihilation, gamma-ray emission from a population
of millisecond pulsars, or emission from cosmic rays injected in a sequence of
burst-like events or continuously at the GC. We present the first comprehensive
study of model systematics coming from the Galactic diffuse emission in the
inner part of our Galaxy and their impact on the inferred properties of the
excess emission at Galactic latitudes and 300 MeV to 500
GeV. We study both theoretical and empirical model systematics, which we deduce
from a large range of Galactic diffuse emission models and a principal
component analysis of residuals in numerous test regions along the Galactic
plane. We show that the hypothesis of an extended spherical excess emission
with a uniform energy spectrum is compatible with the Fermi-LAT data in our
region of interest at CL. Assuming that this excess is the extended
counterpart of the one seen in the inner few degrees of the Galaxy, we derive a
lower limit of ( CL) on its extension away from the GC. We
show that, in light of the large correlated uncertainties that affect the
subtraction of the Galactic diffuse emission in the relevant regions, the
energy spectrum of the excess is equally compatible with both a simple broken
power-law of break energy GeV, and with spectra predicted by the
self-annihilation of dark matter, implying in the case of final
states a dark matter mass of GeV.Comment: 65 pages, 28 figures, 7 table
