    A pseudospectral method for the simulation of 3-D ultrasonic and seismic waves in heterogeneous poroelastic borehole environments

    We present a novel approach for the comprehensive, flexible and accurate simulation of poroelastic wave propagation in 3-D cylindrical coordinates. An important application of this method is the realistic modelling of complex seismic wave phenomena in fluid-filled boreholes, which represents a major, as of yet largely unresolved, problem in exploration geophysics. To this end, we consider a numerical mesh consisting of three concentric domains representing the borehole fluid in the centre followed by the mudcake and/or casing, and the surrounding porous formation. The spatial discretization is based on a Chebyshev expansion in the radial direction and Fourier expansions in the vertical and azimuthal directions as well as a Runge–Kutta integration scheme for the time evolution. Trigonometric interpolation and a domain decomposition method based on the method of characteristics are used to match the boundary conditions at the fluid/porous-solid and porous-solid/porous-solid interfaces as well as to reduce the number of gridpoints in the innermost domain for computational efficiency. We apply this novel modelling approach to the particularly challenging scenario of near-surface borehole environments. To this end, we compare 3-D heterogeneous and corresponding rotationally invariant simulations, assess the sensitivity of Stoneley waves to formation permeability in the presence of a casing and evaluate the effects of an excavation damage zone behind a casing on sonic log recordings. Our results indicate that only first arrival times of fast modes are reasonably well described by rotationally invariant approximations of 3-D heterogenous media. We also find that Stoneley waves are indeed remarkably sensitive to the average permeability behind a perforated PVC casing, and that the presence of an excavation damage zone behind a casing tends to dominate the overall signature of recorded seismograms

    The safety assessment of Campotosto Lake dams following 2016-2017 seismic sequence in Central Italy. Focus on Poggio Cancelli embankment dam

    The Campotosto Lake is one of the biggest reservoirs of Europe, with a storage capacity exceeding 200 million of m3. The natural original lake was confined with three large dams owned by Enel. In the recent past, the lake and the dams have been subjected to a series of seismic events known as the seismic sequence of L'Aquila in 2009 and the seismic sequence of Central Italy in 2016-17. Following the last one, Enel promptly decided to temporarily lower the water level to carry out surveys, measurements and automatic monitoring activities. Based on available data, in order to verify, ensure and asseverate the safety conditions of the dams and the lake’s slopes, a series of multi-disciplinary studies and in-depth analysis were specifically conducted. Detailed studies were developed for the Poggio Cancelli embankment dam: geotechnical surveys, geophysical in situ tests and “advanced” laboratory tests in order to define at best the foundation soil characteristics, thus reasonably excluding the liquefaction risk applying sophisticated methods of analysis. Moreover, InSAR analysis allowed to retrieve the displacement history of the sites and confirmed the topographic measurements taken before and after the earthquakes. Displacement data, together with the real accelerograms recorded at the dam toe were used for a back analysis of the settlements by means of a FEM model of the dam. With this validated model, it was possible to simulate the seismic response of the embankment in the catastrophic scenario represented by the worst expected earthquake at the site. However, recent and important research contributed to establish the position and associated potential magnitude of the Campotosto fault. They indicate that the seismic scenario adopted by our analysis is precautionary, therefore our results are conservative. Seismic assessments on the other dams and InSAR analysis of the slopes surrounding the reservoir were also carried out. All these studies were concluded in 2020 showing good results and satisfactory safety factors, allowing Enel to set up again Campotosto reservoir to normal water levels

    Empathic and cognitive processing in people with schizophrenia: a study on an Italian sample

    The aim of this study was to explore the relationships among empathy processes in terms of self-report empathy evaluation and recognition of emotional cues and Theory of Mind components. We used the Empathy Quotient – short form (EQ-s), the Pictures of Facial Affect (POFA) system, a (ToM) Irony appreciation task and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), respectively. The Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale (PANSS) and Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) were also used to investigate the relationship with symptomatology and functioning. The sample consisted of 30 participants with diagnosis of schizophrenia. Our results found no significant correlations between EQ-s and other cognitive or clinical variables. PoFA total score and recognition of fear correlated with time spent to give a correct response to the ToM irony comprehension. Time spent to correctly respond to both ToM and physical vignettes correlated with negative symptoms. Positive, negative and cognitive clusters of the PANSS correlated with the GAF. The relationships we found among the considered constructs suggest that empathic processing acts on functionality improving the personal efficiency, in terms of readiness and rapidity, to cope with one’s environment, in the multifaceted social setting. Given that emotion perception in particular has been connected to social competence, independent living and community functioning, it is conceivable that emotion processing may be a potential catalyst within the mindreading process, which can have an impact both on symptomatology and social functioning

    Geophysical signature of a World War i tunnel-like anomaly in the Forni Glacier (Punta Linke, Italian Alps)

    Global warming and the associated glacier retreat recently revealed the entrance to an ice\u2013rock tunnel, at an altitude of 3c3600 m a.s.l., in the uppermost portion of the Forni Glacier in the Central Italian Alps. The tunnel served as an entrance to an Austro-Hungarian cableway station excavated in the rocks during the Great War just behind the frontline. A comprehensive geophysical survey, based on seismic and ground-penetrating radar profiling, was then undertaken to map other possibleWorldWar I (WWI) remains still embedded in the ice. The ice\u2013rock interface was reconstructed over the entire saddle and in the uppermost portion of the glacier. A prominent linear reflector was surprisingly similar to the common response of buried pipes. The reflector orientation, almost longitudinal to the slope, does not seem to be compatible with a glacial conduit or with other natural features. Numerical simulations of a series of possible targets constrained interpretation to a partly water-filled rounded shape cavity. The presence of a preserved WWI tunnel connecting Mount Vioz and Punta Linke could be considered a realistic hypothesis. The Forni glacier could be still considered polythermal and comprised of cold ice without basal sliding in its top portion

    A Sustainable Hydroxypropyl Cellulose-Nanodiamond Composite for Flexible Electronic Applications

    Designing fully green materials for flexible electronics is an urgent need due to the growing awareness of an environmental crisis. With the aim of developing a sustainable, printable, and biocompatible material to be exploited in flexible electronics, the rheological, structural and charge transport properties of water-based hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC)-detonation nanodiamond (DND) viscous dispersions are investigated. A rheological investigation disclosed that the presence of the DND affects the orientation and entanglement of cellulose chains in the aqueous medium. In line with rheological analyses, the NMR diffusion experiments pointed out that the presence of DND modifies the hydrodynamic behavior of the cellulose molecules. Despite the increased rigidity of the system, the presence of DND slightly enhances the ionic conductivity of the dispersion, suggesting a modification in the charge transport properties of the material. The electrochemical analyses, performed through Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), revealed that the HPC-DND system is remarkably stable in the explored voltage range (−0.1 to +0.4 V) and characterized by a lowered bulk resistance with respect to HPC. Such features, coupled with the printability and filmability of the material, represent good requirements for the exploitation of such systems in flexible electronic applications

    Sensitivity of Household Transmission to Household Contact Structure and Size

    Study the influence of household contact structure on the spread of an influenza-like illness. Examine whether changes to in-home care giving arrangements can significantly affect the household transmission counts.We simulate two different behaviors for the symptomatic person; either s/he remains at home in contact with everyone else in the household or s/he remains at home in contact with only the primary caregiver in the household. The two different cases are referred to as full mixing and single caregiver, respectively.The results show that the household's cumulative transmission count is lower in case of a single caregiver configuration than in the full mixing case. The household transmissions vary almost linearly with the household size in both single caregiver and full mixing cases. However the difference in household transmissions due to the difference in household structure grows with the household size especially in case of moderate flu.These results suggest that details about human behavior and household structure do matter in epidemiological models. The policy of home isolation of the sick has significant effect on the household transmission count depending upon the household size

    Finite Element Modeling of Ultrasonic Waves in Viscoelastic Media

    Linear viscoelasticity theory offers a minimal framework within which to construct a consistent, linear and causal model of mechanical wave dispersion. The term dispersion is used here to imply temporal wave spreading and amplitude reduction due to absorptive material properties rather than due to geometrical wave spreading. Numerical modeling of wave propagation in absorptive media has been the subject of recent research in such areas as material property measurement [1] [2], seismology [3] [4] [5] and medical ultrasound [6] [7]. Previously, wave attenuation has been included in transient finite element formulations via a constant damping matrix [8] or functionally in terms of a power law relation [9]. The formulation presented here is based on representing the viscoelastic shear and bulk moduli of the medium as either a discrete or continuous spectrum of decaying exponentials [10]. As a first test of the correctness of the viscoelastic finite element formulation, the finite element results for a simple hypothetical medium are compared with an equivalent Laplace-Hankel transform domain solution.</p

    Elevated gas hydrate saturation within silt and silty clay sediments in the Shenhu area, South China Sea

Gas hydrate saturations derived from observed pore water chloride values in core samples range from 10 to 45% of the pore space at 190–221 m below seafloor (mbsf). Gas hydrate saturations estimated from resistivity (Rt) using wireline logging results are similar and range from 10 to 40.5% in the pore space. Gas hydrate saturations were also estimated by P wave velocity obtained during wireline logging by using a simplified three-phase equation (STPE) and effective medium theory (EMT) models. Gas hydrate saturations obtained from the STPE velocity model (41.0% maximum) are slightly higher than those calculated with the EMT velocity model (38.5% maximum). Methane analysis from a 69 cm long depressurized core from the hydrate-bearing sediment zone indicates that gas hydrate saturation is about 27.08% of the pore space at 197.5 mbsf. Results from the five methods show similar values and nearly identical trends in gas hydrate saturations above the base of the gas hydrate stability zone at depths of 190 to 221 mbsf. Gas hydrate occurs within units of clayey slit and silt containing abundant calcareous nannofossils and foraminifer, which increase the porosities of the fine-grained sediments and provide space for enhanced gas hydrate formation. In addition, gas chimneys, faults, and fractures identified from three-dimensional (3-D) and high-resolution two-dimensional (2-D) seismic data provide pathways for fluids migrating into the gas hydrate stability zone which transport methane for the formation of gas hydrate.     Risk Factors of Household Transmission of Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 among Patients Treated with Antivirals: A Prospective Study at a Primary Clinic in Japan

    Background: Household transmission of influenza can affect the daily lives of patients and their families and be a trigger for community transmission, thus it is necessary to take precautions to prevent household transmission. We aimed to determine the risks of household transmission of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza virus from an index patient who visited a primary clinic and was treated with antiviral drugs. Methods: We followed up all the patients who were diagnosed with influenza A by rapid diagnostic test with a questionnaire or interview from July 2009 to April 2010. Secondary cases were defined as patients visiting the clinic or other clinics and being positive for influenza A by rapid diagnostic test within 7 days of onset of an index patient. Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the association between household transmission and the studied variables. Results: We recruited 591 index patients and 1629 household contacts. The crude secondary attack rate was 7.3 % [95% confidence interval (CI): 6.1–8.7]. Age of index patients (0–6 years old: odds ratio 2.56; 95 % CI: 1.31–4.01; 7–12 years old: 2.44, 1.31–3.72; 30–39 years old 3.88; 2.09–5.21; 40 years old or more 2.76; 1.17–4.53) and number of household members with five or more (3.09, 2.11–4.07), medication started 48 hours from the onset of fever (2.38, 1.17–3.87) were significantly associated with household transmission.
