Generating time series reference models based on event analysis

    Get PDF
Creating a reference model that represents a given set of time series is a relevant problem as it can be applied to a wide range of tasks like diagnosis, decision support, fraud detection, etc. In some domains, like seismography or medicine, the relevant information contained in the time series is concentrated in short periods of time called events. In this paper, we propose a technique for generating time series reference models based on the analysis of the events they contain. The proposed technique has been applied to time series from two medical domains: Electroencephalography, a neurological procedure to record the electrical activity produced by the brain and Stabilometry, a branch of medicine studying balance-related functions in human beings

Two Different Approaches of Feature Extraction for Classifying the EEG Signals

The electroencephalograph (EEG) signal is one of the most widely used signals in the biomedicine field due to its rich information about human tasks. This research study describes a new approach based on i) build reference models from a set of time series, based on the analysis of the events that they contain, is suitable for domains where the relevant information is concentrated in specific regions of the time series, known as events. In order to deal with events, each event is characterized by a set of attributes. ii) Discrete wavelet transform to the EEG data in order to extract temporal information in the form of changes in the frequency domain over time- that is they are able to extract non-stationary signals embedded in the noisy background of the human brain. The performance of the model was evaluated in terms of training performance and classification accuracies and the results confirmed that the proposed scheme has potential in classifying the EEG signals

    Modelling Stabilometric Time Series

Stabilometry is a branch of medicine that studies balance-related human functions. Stabilometric systems generate time series. The analysis of these time series using data mining techniques can be very useful for domain experts. In the field of stabilometry, as in many other domains, the key nuggets of information in a time series are concentrated within definite time periods known as events. In this paper, we propose a technique for creating reference models for stabilometric time series based on event analysis. After testing the technique on time series recorded by top-competition sportspeople, we conclude that stabilometric models can be used to classify individuals by their balance-related abilitie

Such as we know it, globalization does not solve the problems or address the questions of living together on the Earth. Thus, in the current context, the struggle for democracy involves three essential aspects: the reinvention of the emancipatory power of knowledge, with more and better sciences, social sciences, and other argumentative knowledges; the reintroduction of the school as the privileged site for the learning of a full citizenship; and the establishment and defense of a society of recognition, in which the valorization of the other as interlocutor corresponds to the planetary throbbing of our species.

Natural variability of lotic Mediterranean ecosystems or wildfire perturbations: who will win?

    Get PDF
This study evaluates the impacts of wildfires in lotic Mediterranean ecosystems. It was carried out at Monchique ridge after big wildfires occurred during 2002 and 2003. Deferential impacts were evaluated comparing historical results obtained before the wildfires (1999 and 2001), with the post fire ones (2006 and 2007). Physical and chemical parameters of the water, habitat morphology, diatoms, macrophytes, macroinvertebrates and fishes were evaluated at 10 collecting places, before and after wildfires. High recovering rates were observed to the vegetation, but it is still possible to found fire impacts over macrophytes and river morphology. Wildfires, contributed to canopy decrease and, consequently to the growth of plants that usually are controlled by shadow. As a result, vegetation biodiversity tend to increase. River banks tend also to be invaded by terrestrial plants. Higher post fires recover rates were observed to the more aquatic communities (diatoms, macroinvertebrates and fishes). For those communities, comparing spring situations before and after the fires no substantial differences were observed. Sometimes differences between consecutive years are even higher. So it can be concluded that magnitude of wildfire impacts is less than the natural inter-annual variability of Mediterranean rivers. Long-term effects of forest fires, resulting from large woody debries, were also detected by morphological alterations, like debries dams. Habitat diversity increase and impacts on aquatic communities are expected

To identify the prevalence of risk behaviors to eating disorders in teenagers from Palmas-TO and its relation to body dissatisfaction and sociodemographic characteristics. It’s a quantitative descriptive research performed with student teenagers from high school. The data collect happened remote. The Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) was used for eating behavior evaluation and the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) to evaluate body self-realization. The sample was constituted by 58 participants, majorly females with ages between 15 and 17 years, studying in second year. We found that 17,2% of the sample had a positive score on EAT-26, while 8,6% showed some level of body dissatisfaction according to BSQ. There were no associations between sex, age, height and BMI with the scores on EAT-26 and BSQ. A positive association between body dissatisfaction and overweight or obesity was observed (p=0,007). Furthermore, it was found that adolescents with some level of body dissatisfaction had higher median score on EAT-26 (p=0,03).Identificar a prevalência de comportamentos de risco para transtornos alimentares em adolescentes de Palmas-TO e sua associação com a insatisfação corporal e características sociodemográficas.
