    Mexico's Banking Crisis: Devaluation and Asset Concentration Effects

    The sharp 1994-1995 Mexican peso devaluation was followed by a financial-sector crisis, forcing the Mexican government to retake control of several banks and to grant substantial assistance to many other banks. This paper uses daily stock price data to test several hypotheses concerning the impact of devaluation. First, we use event-study methodology to test whether some sectors of Mexican economy were 'devaluation-gaining' while other sectors were 'devaluation-losing.' Second, we test the linkage between the devaluation and the financial-sector crisis that ensued. Specifically, we test whether devaluation shocks were transmitted through the liability side versus the asset side of bank balance sheets. Our results suggest that governments should consider putting minimum guidelines on bank portfolios

    Medical Staff Organization in Nursing Homes: Scale Development and Validation

    PURPOSE: To construct a multidimensional self-report scale to measure nursing home (NH) medical staff organization (NHMSO) dimensions and then pilot the scale using a national survey of medical directors to provide data on its psychometric properties. DESIGN AND METHODS: Instrument development process consisting of the proceedings from the Nursing Home Physician Workforce Conference and focus groups followed by cognitive interviews, which culminated in a survey of a random sample of American Medical Directors Association (AMDA) affiliated medical directors. Analyses were conducted on surveys matched to Online Survey Certification and Reporting (OSCAR) data from freestanding nonpediatric nursing homes. A total of 202 surveys were available for analysis and comprised the final sample. RESULTS: Dimensions were identified that measured the extent of medical staff organization in nursing homes and included staff composition, appointment process, commitment (physiciancohesion; leadership turnover/capability), departmentalization (physician supervision, autonomy and interdisciplinary involvement), documentation, and informal dynamics. The items developed to measure each dimension were reliable (Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.81 to 0.65).Intercorrelations among the scale dimensions provided preliminary evidence of the construct validity of the scale. IMPLICATIONS: This report, for the first time ever, defines and validates NH medical staff organization dimensions, a critical first step in determining the relationship between physician practice and the quality of care delivered in the NH

    Exploring Ecoacoustic Trajectories in a Giant Sequoia Forest After Wildfire

    Forest management strategies that create spatially diverse fire-caused disturbance outcomes, consistent with historic fire regimes, are a desired condition for fire adapted western United States forests. In this context, the temporal dynamics of forest response to fire can inform the tempo and scale of forest management, including prescribed burning. Here, we investigated the use of ecoacoustic methods to assess ecological condition in a four-year period (2016–2019) after wildfire in a giant sequoia forest landscape within Kings Canyon National Park, California, United States. Audio recorders at nine sites were deployed soon after the 2015 Rough Fire subsided. The monitoring sites were located in regions with different fire histories, representing five fire history categories. We used the Acoustic Complexity Index (ACI) to document biotic chorus complexity. This previously tested ecoacoustic index provided a daily indicator of biotic sound activity in frequencies dominated by avian calls. Patterns in ACI were evaluated using generalized additive mixed models to understand the relationship with time-since-fire and covariates that accounted for season, fire history category, and weather conditions. We showed that time-since fire and fire-history influenced patterns in ACI after accounting for season and air temperature effects. Monitoring sites where prescribed fire preceded the Rough Fire showed the highest predicted ACI and evidence for a relatively consistent seasonal pattern in ecoacoustic activity across subsequent seasons. Sites without prescribed fire and burned by the Rough Fire exhibited the most pronounced successive decreases in ACI in the first and second years after the fire. The daily temporal resolution of the ecoacoustic index also revealed phenological shifts related to time-since-fire and fire history. Sites unburned by the Rough Fire offered some context for how fire changed ecoacoustic activity post-wildfire, however evidence suggested they were also impacted by the presence of the nearby Rough Fire. The patterns in the ecoacoustic index when combined with vegetation surveys offered complementary insights into ecological dynamics of regeneration after fire. Our exploratory analysis showed that using ecoacoustic methods in wildfire monitoring offers a scalable approach to remote sensing of ecological trends. Archived recordings from the monitoring effort afford future opportunities for new or more detailed insights

    Multisite Qualitative Study of Primary Care Physicians’ and Midlevel Providers’ Self-Reported Practices and Perceptions About Maintaining Cognitive Health

    IntroductionTo facilitate national efforts to maintain cognitive health through public health practice, the Healthy Brain Initiative recommended examining diverse groups to identify stakeholder perspectives on cognitive health. In response, the Healthy Aging Research Network (HAN), funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), coordinated projects to document the perspectives of older adults, caregivers of people with dementia, and primary care providers (PCPs) on maintaining cognitive health. Our objective was to describe PCPs’ perceptions and practices regarding cognitive health.MethodsHAN researchers conducted 10 focus groups and 3 interviews with physicians (N = 28) and advanced practice providers (N = 21) in Colorado, Texas, and North Carolina from June 2007 to November 2008. Data were transcribed and coded axially.ResultsPCPs reported addressing cognitive health with patients only indirectly in the context of physical health or in response to observed functional changes and patient or family requests. Some providers felt evidence on the efficacy of preventive strategies for cognitive health was insufficient, but many reported suggesting activities such as games and social interaction when queried by patients. PCPs identified barriers to talking with patients about cognitive health such as lack of time and patient reactions to recommendations.ConclusionCommunicating new evidence on cognitive health and engaging older adults in making lasting lifestyle changes recommended by PCPs and others may be practical ways in which public health practitioners can partner with PCPs to address cognitive health in health care settings

    Decadal changes in fire frequencies shift tree communities and functional traits

    Global change has resulted in chronic shifts in fire regimes. Variability in the sensitivity of tree communities to multi-decadal changes in fire regimes is critical to anticipating shifts in ecosystem structure and function, yet remains poorly understood. Here, we address the overall effects of fire on tree communities and the factors controlling their sensitivity in 29 sites that experienced multi-decadal alterations in fire frequencies in savanna and forest ecosystems across tropical and temperate regions. Fire had a strong overall effect on tree communities, with an average fire frequency (one fire every three years) reducing stem density by 48% and basal area by 53% after 50 years, relative to unburned plots. The largest changes occurred in savanna ecosystems and in sites with strong wet seasons or strong dry seasons, pointing to fire characteristics and species composition as important. Analyses of functional traits highlighted the impact of fire-driven changes in soil nutrients because frequent burning favoured trees with low biomass nitrogen and phosphorus content, and with more efficient nitrogen acquisition through ectomycorrhizal symbioses. Taken together, the response of trees to altered fire frequencies depends both on climatic and vegetation determinants of fire behaviour and tree growth, and the coupling between fire-driven nutrient losses and plant traits

    Impaired Growth and Force Production in Skeletal Muscles of Young Partially Pancreatectomized Rats: A Model of Adolescent Type 1 Diabetic Myopathy?

    This present study investigated the temporal effects of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) on adolescent skeletal muscle growth, morphology and contractile properties using a 90% partial pancreatecomy (Px) model of the disease. Four week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to Px (n = 25) or Sham (n = 24) surgery groups and euthanized at 4 or 8 weeks following an in situ assessment of muscle force production. Compared to Shams, Px were hyperglycemic (>15 mM) and displayed attenuated body mass gains by days 2 and 4, respectively (both P<0.05). Absolute maximal force production of the gastrocnemius plantaris soleus complex (GPS) was 30% and 50% lower in Px vs. Shams at 4 and 8 weeks, respectively (P<0.01). GP mass was 35% lower in Px vs Shams at 4 weeks (1.24±0.06 g vs. 1.93±0.03 g, P<0.05) and 45% lower at 8 weeks (1.57±0.12 vs. 2.80±0.06, P<0.05). GP fiber area was 15–20% lower in Px vs. Shams at 4 weeks in all fiber types. At 8 weeks, GP type I and II fiber areas were ∼25% and 40% less, respectively, in Px vs. Shams (group by fiber type interactions, P<0.05). Phosphorylation states of 4E-BP1 and S6K1 following leucine gavage increased 2.0- and 3.5-fold, respectively, in Shams but not in Px. Px rats also had impaired rates of muscle protein synthesis in the basal state and in response to gavage. Taken together, these data indicate that exposure of growing skeletal muscle to uncontrolled T1DM significantly impairs muscle growth and function largely as a result of impaired protein synthesis in type II fibers
