    Function and fiber-type specific distribution of hsp60 and αb-crystallin in skeletal muscles: Role of physical exercise

    Skeletal muscle is a plastic and complex tissue, rich in proteins that are subject to continuous rearrangements. Skeletal muscle homeostasis can be affected by different types of stresses, including physical activity, a physiological stressor able to stimulate a robust increase in different heat shock proteins (HSPs). The modulation of these proteins appears to be fundamental in facili-tating the cellular remodeling processes related to the phenomenon of training adaptations such as hypertrophy, increased oxidative capacity, and mitochondrial activity. Among the HSPs, a special attention needs to be devoted to Hsp60 and αB-crystallin (CRYAB), proteins constitutively expressed in the skeletal muscle, where their specific features could be highly relevant in understanding the impact of different volumes of training regimes on myofiber types and in explaining the complex picture of exercise-induced mechanical strain and damaging conditions on fiber pop-ulation. This knowledge could lead to a better personalization of training protocols with an opti-mal non-harmful workload in populations of individuals with different needs and healthy status. Here, we introduce for the first time to the reader these peculiar HSPs from the perspective of exercise response, highlighting the control of their expression, biological function, and specific distribution within skeletal muscle fiber-types

    Retromode imaging modality of epiretinal membranes

    (1) Purpose: To determine the characteristics of macular epiretinal membranes (ERM) using non-invasive retromode imaging (RMI) and to compare retromode images with those acquired via fundus autofluorescence (FAF) and fundus photography. (2) Methods: Prospective observational case-series study including patients with macular ERM with no other ocular disease affecting their morphology and/or imaging quality. We compared RMI, FAF and fundus photography features by cropping and overlapping images to obtain topographic correspondence. (3) Results: In total, 21 eyes (21 patients) affected by ERM were included in this study. The mean area of retinal folds detected by RMI was significantly higher than that detected by FAF (11.85 ± 3.92 mm2 and 5.67 ± 2.15 mm2, respectively, p < 0.05) and similar to that revealed by fundus photography (11.85 ± 3.92 mm2 and 10.58 ± 3.45 mm2, respectively, p = 0.277). (4) Conclusions: RMI appears to be a useful tool in the evaluation of ERMs. It allows for an accurate visualization of the real extension of the retinal folds and provides a precise structural assessment of the macula before surgery. Clinicians should be aware of RMI's advantages and should be able to use them to warrant a wide range of information and, thus, a more personalized therapeutic approach

    Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography to estimate early retinal blood flow changes after uncomplicated cataract surgery

    Background: To investigate macular microvascular changes after uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery according to the cataract severity grade. Methods: Retrospective, cross-sectional study involving 23 eyes of 23 patients who underwent elective cataract extraction. All patients underwent routine ophthalmologic examination, including optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) at baseline (preoperative visit, T0) and seven days postoperatively (T7). OCTA scans were obtained with the spectral domain system Cirrus 5000 (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc., Dublin, CA, USA), and 3 mm × 3 mm raster fovea-centered scans were obtained to evaluate the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) vessel density, perfusion density, and foveal avascular zone (FAZ) parameters. Results: SCP perfusion density significantly increased from 28.3 ± 5.73% to 33.74 ± 4.13% after the surgery (p < 0.001). Similarly, SCP vessel density significantly increased from 15.14 ± 3.41 mm-1 to 18.14 ± 2.57 mm-1 after surgery (p < 0.001). The mean preoperative FAZ area significantly increased from 0.27 ± 0.12 mm to 0.24 ± 0.11 mm seven days postoperatively (p = 0.008). When comparing softer and harder cataracts, no significant variations in SCP vessel density, as well as SCP perfusion density parameters and the FAZ area, perimeter, and circularity index, were noted before and after surgery. Conclusions: Macular SPC vessel density and macular SCP perfusion density increase after uncomplicated cataract surgery regardless of the cataract severity

    Macular impairment in fabry disease: A morpho-functional assessment by swept-source OCT angiography and focal electroretinography

    PURPOSE. Fabry disease (FD) is a multiorgan X-linked condition characterized by a deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme alpha-galactosidase A, resulting in a progressive intralysosomal deposit of globotriaosylceramide. The aim of this study was to evaluate the macular ultrastructure of the vascular network using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and to evaluate macular function using focal electroretinography (fERG) in Fabry patients (FPs). METHODS. A total of 20 FPs (38 eyes, mean age 57 \ub1 2.12 SD, range of 27\u201380 years) and 17 healthy controls (27 eyes, mean age 45 years \ub1 20.50 SD, range of 24\u201365 years) were enrolled in the study. Color fundus photography, swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), OCTA and fERG were performed in all subjects. The OCTA foveal avascular zone (FAZ), vasculature structure, superficial and deep retinal plexus densities (images of 4.5 X 4.5 mm) and fERG amplitudes were measured. Group differences were statistically assessed by Student\u2019s t-test and ANOVA. RESULTS. In the FP group, the FAZ areas of the superficial and deep plexuses were enlarged (P = 0.036, t = 2.138; P < 0.001, t = 3.889, respectively), the vessel density was increased in the superficial plexus, and the fERG amplitude was reduced (P < 0.001, t = 10.647) compared with those in healthy controls. No significant correlations were found between the structural and functional data. CONCLUSIONS. OCTA vascular abnormalities and reduced fERG amplitudes indicate subclinical signs of microangiopathy with early retinal dysfunction in FPs.     Optimizing C-RAN Backhaul Topologies: A Resilience-Oriented Approach Using Graph Invariants

    ABSTRACT: At the verge of the launch of the first commercial fifth generation (5G) system, trends in wireless and optical networks are proceeding toward increasingly dense deployments, supporting resilient interconnection for applications that carry higher and higher capacity and tighter latency requirements. These developments put increasing pressure on network backhaul and drive the need for a re-examination of traditional backhaul topologies. Challenges of impending networks cannot be tackled by star and ring approaches due to their lack of intrinsic survivability and resilience properties, respectively. In support of this re-examination, we propose a backhaul topology design method that formulates the topology optimization as a graph optimization problem by capturing both the objective and constraints of optimization in graph invariants. Our graph theoretic approach leverages well studied mathematical techniques to provide a more systematic alternative to traditional approaches to backhaul design. Specifically, herein, we optimize over some known graph invariants, such as maximum node degree, topology diameter, average distance, and edge betweenness, as well as over a new invariant called node Wiener impact, to achieve baseline backhaul topologies that match the needs for resilient future wireless and optical networks
