Using Different Approaches to Evaluate Individual Social Equity in Transport
Inequalities not only exist in the field of economics in relation to income and wealth, but also in other areas, such as the transport sector, where access to and use of different transport modes varies markedly across population groups, and which provides the means to access everyday living activities. A key concern within the transport sector is that inequality has extended beyond the traditional measures of travel, and now covers a wide range of effects relating to social exclusion, freedom, well-being and being able to access reasonable opportunities and resources. In order to address the aforementioned issues, an important question to resolve is what type of methods can be used to measure inequalities in transport most effectively. Therefore, this study aims to apply different approaches, including the Capabilities Approach (CA) and a further six inequality indices, namely the Gini coefficient, the Atkinson index, the Palma ratio, the Pietra ratio, the Schutz coefficient and the Theil index, to the case study using the relatively migrant-rich lower-income neighbourhood of Tuqiao, in Beijing, in order to assess individual transport-related social inequity issues. The findings suggest that the CA is useful in assessing transport-related inequalities where there are significant barriers to the take up of accessibility, for example where there are high levels of disadvantaged groups and disaggregated analysis can be undertaken. The Palma ratio appears to have a larger effect than the Gini coefficient and the other inequality indices when measuring transport-related social inequity. In addition, we also found that most income inequality methods adapted from econometrics may be better suited to measuring transport-related social inequity between different regions, cities or countries, or within the same area, but at different points in time, rather than to measuring a single neighbourhood as a whole. Finally, we argue that to what extent politicians or transport planners can use appropriate management tools to measure transport-related social inequalities may be significant in terms of the progress that can be made in the fight against social inequity in the transport field
Deviation contribution plots of multivariate statistics
As data analytic techniques evolve and the accessibility of process measurements improves, data-driven process monitoring has enjoyed a quick development in both theoretical and application perspectives recently. Although abundant process measurements will facilitate data-driven process monitoring and lead to better monitoring indices, it becomes difficult to identify the underlying variables that are responsible for a fault directly with the monitoring indices as the scope of measured variables is getting broader. To restrain the scope and identify the source of fault, contribution plots are commonly used in fault diagnosis in order to quantify the influence of process variables in presence of fault. Nevertheless, as sophisticated monitoring techniques become more and more complicated, deriving corresponding contribution plots is challenging. The concept of deviation contribution plots is proposed to address this issue. By extending the original definition of contribution for linear processes, the deviation contribution is defined to quantify the contribution of deviations in originally measured variables to the deviation of monitoring indices. The ability of proposed deviation contribution plots to identify influential variables in monitoring algorithms based on nonlinear feature extractions is verified by both numerical simulation and the Tennessee Eastman Process benchmark case study
Competing Ground States in Triple-layered Sr4Ru3O10: Verging on Itinerant Ferromagnetism with Critical Fluctuations
Sr4Ru3O10 is characterized by a sharp metamagnetic transition and
ferromagnetic behavior occurring within the basal plane and along the c-axis,
respectively. Resistivity at magnetic field, B, exhibits low-frequency quantum
oscillations when B||c-axis and large magnetoresistivity accompanied by
critical fluctuations driven by the metamagnetism when B^c-axis. The complex
behavior evidenced in resistivity, magnetization and specific heat presented is
not characteristic of any obvious ground states, and points to an exotic state
that shows a delicate balance between fluctuations and order.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure
Destruction of the Mott Insulating Ground State of Ca_2RuO_4 by a Structural Transition
We report a first-order phase transition at T_M=357 K in single crystal
Ca_2RuO_4, an isomorph to the superconductor Sr_2RuO_4. The discontinuous
decrease in electrical resistivity signals the near destruction of the Mott
insulating phase and is triggered by a structural transition from the low
temperature orthorhombic to a high temperature tetragonal phase. The magnetic
susceptibility, which is temperature dependent but not Curie-like decreases
abruptly at TM and becomes less temperature dependent. Unlike most insulator to
metal transitions, the system is not magnetically ordered in either phase,

Long-Range Plasmon Assisted Energy Transfer Between Fluorescent Emitters
We demonstrate plasmon assisted energy transfer between fluorophores located
at distances up to m on the top of a thin silver film. Thanks to the
strong confinement and large propagation length of surface plasmon polaritons,
the range of the energy transfer is almost two orders of magnitude larger than
the values reported in the literature so far. The parameters driving the energy
transfer range are thoroughly characterized and are in very good agreement with

MT1-MMP sheds LYVE-1 on lymphatic endothelial cells and suppresses VEGF-C production to inhibit lymphangiogenesis
Lymphangiogensis is involved in various pathological conditions, such as arthritis and cancer metastasis. Although many factors have been identified to stimulate lymphatic vessel growth, little is known about lymphangiogenesis inhibitors. Here we report that membrane type 1-matrix metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP) is an endogenous suppressor of lymphatic vessel growth. MT1-MMP-deficient mice exhibit spontaneous corneal lymphangiogenesis without concomitant changes in angiogenesis. Mice lacking MT1-MMP in either lymphatic endothelial cells or macrophages recapitulate corneal lymphangiogenic phenotypes observed in Mmp14−/− mice, suggesting that the spontaneous lymphangiogenesis is both lymphatic endothelial cells autonomous and macrophage associated. Mechanistically, MT1-MMP directly cleaves LYVE-1 on lymphatic endothelial cells to inhibit LYVE-1-mediated lymphangiogenic responses. In addition, MT1-MMP-mediated PI3Kδ signalling restrains the production of VEGF-C from prolymphangiogenic macrophages through repressing the activation of NF-κB signalling. On the exceptional damage-tolerance of gradient metallic materials
An experimental study is described on the fracture toughness and micro-mechanisms associated with the initiation and propagation of cracks in metallic nickel containing marked gradients in grain size, ranging from ∼30 nm to ∼4 μm. Specifically, cracks are grown in a gradient structured (GS) nickel with grain-size gradient ranging from the coarse macro-scale to nano-scale (CG → NG) and vice versa (NG → CG), with the measured crack-resistance R-curves compared to the corresponding behavior in uniform nano-grained (NG) and coarse-grained (CG) materials. It is found that the gradient structures display a much-improved combination of high strength and toughness compared to uniform grain-sized materials. However, based on J-integral measurements in the gradient materials, the crack-initiation toughness is far higher for cracks grown in the direction of the coarse-to-nano grained gradient than vice versa, a result which we ascribe primarily to excessive crack-tip blunting in the coarse-grained microstructure. Both gradient structures, however, display marked rising R-curve behavior with exceptional crack-growth toughnesses exceeding 200 MPa.m½
