    Destruction of the Mott Insulating Ground State of Ca_2RuO_4 by a Structural Transition

    We report a first-order phase transition at T_M=357 K in single crystal Ca_2RuO_4, an isomorph to the superconductor Sr_2RuO_4. The discontinuous decrease in electrical resistivity signals the near destruction of the Mott insulating phase and is triggered by a structural transition from the low temperature orthorhombic to a high temperature tetragonal phase. The magnetic susceptibility, which is temperature dependent but not Curie-like decreases abruptly at TM and becomes less temperature dependent. Unlike most insulator to metal transitions, the system is not magnetically ordered in either phase, though the Mott insulator phase is antiferromagnetic below T_N=110 K.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys.     HACCP/RMP Adoption in the New Zealand Meat Industry

    In New Zealand, the Animal Products Act 1999 requires that all animal product primary processing businesses must have a risk management programme (RMP) based on the principles of Hazards Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP). However, due to market access requirements, many primary food exporters have voluntarily adopted HACCP systems for food safety management since the 1990s. This paper studies the process of HACCP/RMP adoption and the transition from voluntary HACCP to mandatory RMP in New Zealand Meat Industry. The main issues explored are plants' motivations, implementation problems, costs and benefits associated with the implementation of HACCP/RMP.     Approximation methods for hybrid diffusion systems with state-dependent switching processes : numerical algorithms and existence and uniqueness of solutions

    By focusing on hybrid diffusions in which continuous dynamics and discrete events coexist, this work is concerned with approximation of solutions for hybrid stochastic differential equations with a state-dependent switching process. Iterative algorithms are developed. The continuous-state dependent switching process presents added difficulties in analyzing the numerical procedures. Weak convergence of the algorithms is established by a martingale problem formulation first. This weak convergence result is then used as a bridge to obtain strong convergence. In this process, the existence and uniqueness of the solution of the switching diffusions with continuous-state-dependent switching are obtained. Different from the existing results of solutions of stochastic differential equations in which the Picard iterations are utilized, Euler's numerical schemes are considered here. Moreover, decreasing stepsize algorithms together with their weak convergence are given. Numerical experiments are also provided for demonstration

    Single Top Quark Production and Decay at Next-to-leading Order in Hadron Collision

    We present a calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections, with one-scale phase space slicing method, to single top quark production and decay process ppˉ,pptbˉ+Xbνbˉ+Xp\bar{p},pp\to t\bar{b}+X\to b\ell\nu\bar{b}+X at hadron colliders. Using the helicity amplitude method, the angular correlation of the final state partons and the spin correlation of the top quark are preserved.     Specific Heat of Sr4Ru3O10

    We have measured the specific heat of single crystals of the triple-layer Ruddlesden-Popper material, Sr4Ru3O10, grown both in an image furnace and by flux-growth. The flux grown sample has a sharp mean-field-like anomaly at the onset of magnetic order, Tc = 102 K, but a much broader anomaly, indicative of residual heterogeneity, is observed for the image furnace sample. Even for the flux grown sample, however, the anomaly is at least an order of magnitude smaller than one would expect for complete ordering of the spins. Neither sample exhibits an anomaly at Tm ~ 50 K, where magnetic measurements suggest that basal plane antiferromagnetism sets in. Anomalous behavior (e.g. consistent with a term in the specific heat ~ T^3/2 as would be observed for a three-dimensional ferromagnet with weak exchange) is observed at low temperatures for both samples, indicative of the unusual magnetic order in this material.Comment: 14 pages including 4 figure

    Suppression of magnetism in Ba5AlIr2O11: interplay of Hund's coupling, molecular orbitals and spin-orbit interaction

    The electronic and magnetic properties of Ba5_5AlIr2_2O11_{11} containing Ir-Ir dimers are investigated using the GGA and GGA+SOC calculations. We found that strong suppression of the magnetic moment in this compound recently found in [J. Terzic {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 91}, 235147 (2015)] is not due to charge-ordering, but is related to the joint effect of the spin-orbit interaction and strong covalency, resulting in the formation of metal-metal bonds. They conspire and act against the intra-atomic Hund's rule exchange interaction to reduce total magnetic moment of the dimer. We argue that the same mechanism could be relevant for other 4d4d and 5d5d dimerized transition metal compounds

    Orbitally-driven Behavior: Mott Transition, Quantum Oscillations and Colossal Magnetoresistance in Bilayered Ca3Ru2O7

    We report recent transport and thermodynamic experiments over a wide range of temperatures for the Mott-like system Ca3Ru2O7 at high magnetic fields, B, up to 30 T. This work reveals a rich and highly anisotropic phase diagram, where applying B along the a-, b-, and c-axis leads to vastly different behavior. A fully spin-polarized state via a first order metamagnetic transition is obtained for B||a, and colossal magnetoresistance is seen for B||b, and quantum oscillations in the resistivity are observed for B||c, respectively. The interplay of the lattice, orbital and spin degrees of freedom are believed to give rise to this strongly anisotropic behavior.Comment: 26 pages and 8 figure
