Further-Adjusted Long-Term Temperature Series in China Based on MASH
A set of homogenized monthly mean surface air temperature (SAT) series at 32 stations in China back to the 19th century had previously been developed based on the RHtest method by Cao et al., but some inhomogeneities remained in the dataset. The present study produces a further-adjusted and updated dataset based on the Multiple Analysis of Series for Homogenization (MASH) method. The MASH procedure detects 33 monthly temperature records as erroneous outliers and 152 meaningful break points in the monthly SAT series since 1924 at 28 stations. The inhomogeneous parts are then adjusted relative to the latest homogeneous part of the series. The new data show significant warming trends during 1924â2016 at all the stations, ranging from 0.48 to 3.57°C (100 yr)â1, with a regional mean trend of 1.65°C (100 yr)â1; whereas, the previous results ranged from a slight cooling at two stations to considerable warming, up to 4.5°C (100 yr)â1. It is suggested that the further-adjusted data are a better representation of the large-scale pattern of climate change in the region for the past century. The new data are available online at http://www.dx.doi.org/10.11922/sciencedb.516
Applications of Schauderâs Fixed Point Theorem to Semipositone Singular Differential Equations
We study the existence of positive periodic solutions of second-order singular differential equations. The proof relies on Schauderâs fixed point theorem. Our results generalized and extended those results contained in the studies by Chu and Torres (2007) and Torres (2007)
. In some suitable weak singularities, the existence of periodic solutions may help
A Review of Surface Treatments for Sliding Bearings Used at Different Temperature
The boundary lubrication and dry friction of plain bearings at different work temperature are unable to be avoided under the start and stop condition. The poor lubrication is one reason of bearing broken. In order to improve the tribological properties and select the best treatment for different bearings used at different temperature, the studies of different treatment technologies are reviewed in this paper. The review shows that the shortages of bonding fiber woven materials, inlaying solid lubricating materials, electro plating and magnetron sputtering are poor temperature resistance, low load capacity, environment pollution and low production efficiencies respectively. Based on the analyses and summaries, the liquid dope spraying and thermal powder spraying are suggested to deposit coating on the surface of bearing which working temperature is lower than 200 and above 800°C respectively. However, the technology processes, the mechanisms of spraying and self-lubrication materials should be studied further and deeply
High-temperature graphitization characteristics of vitrinite and inertinite
In order to explore the graphitization characteristic differences between vitrinite and inertinite in coal, this study conducted high-temperature thermal simulation experiments (at five temperature points: 1800°C, 2100°C, 2400°C, 2700°C, and 3000°C) using inertinite-rich and vitrinite-rich samples as graphitization precursors. The quantitative comparison for the evolution characteristics of their graphite lattice was carried out using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy (Raman) techniques. HRTEM revealed that an evident increase in carbon layer numbers and degree of extension was observed with increasing treatment temperature, XRD showed the variation of lattice parameters (d002/La/Lc) with temperature, Raman data revealed the variation of lattice defects (R2/R3) with temperature. It was discussed about the differences of graphite lattice construction processes between inertinite and vitrinite, throughout the entire temperature range of the experiment, the d002 spacing of inertinite was always smaller than that of vitrinite, indicating a higher degree of graphitization. vitrinite exhibited a uniform and smooth evolution state throughout the entire heating process, while inertinite exhibited an âinertâ state between 1800°C and 2100°C (d002 values stagnated near at 0.3440 nm). With increasing simulated temperature, the defect level (R2 and R3) of vitrinite rapidly decreased below that of inertinite, throughout the entire temperature range, vitrinite demonstrated superior defect healing ability in terms of both rate and capability compared to inertinite. Under high-temperature thermal simulation, the three-dimensional lattice construction and defect elimination of vitrinite exhibited synchronous evolution characteristics. On the other hand, the formation of the graphite lattice in inertinite showed an evolutionary trend of âfirst three-dimensional lattice construction, followed by gradual defect eliminationâ
Observation of oscillatory relaxation in the Sn-terminated surface of epitaxial rock-salt SnSe topological crystalline insulator
Topological crystalline insulators have been recently predicted and observed
in rock-salt structure SnSe thin films. Previous studies have
suggested that the Se-terminated surface of this thin film with hydrogen
passivation, has a reduced surface energy and is thus a preferred
configuration. In this paper, synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoemission
spectroscopy, along with density functional theory calculations, are used to
demonstrate conclusively that a rock-salt SnSe thin film
epitaxially-grown on \ce{Bi2Se3} has a stable Sn-terminated surface. These
observations are supported by low energy electron diffraction (LEED)
intensity-voltage measurements and dynamical LEED calculations, which further
show that the Sn-terminated SnSe thin film has undergone a surface
structural relaxation of the interlayer spacing between the Sn and Se atomic
planes. In sharp contrast to the Se-terminated counterpart, the observed Dirac
surface state in the Sn-terminated SnSe thin film is shown to yield a
high Fermi velocity, m/s, which suggests a potential mechanism
of engineering the Dirac surface state of topological materials by tuning the
surface configuration.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, supplementary materials include
Microbial-Driven Butyrate Regulates Jejunal Homeostasis in Piglets During the Weaning Stage
Microbe-derived butyrate plays an important role in the gut health of young mammals during the weaning stage. A greater understanding of how butyrate regulates intestinal development is necessary for overcoming post-weaning diarrheal diseases. We aimed to investigate whether jejunal microbial metabolite butyrate modulates the apoptosis/proliferation balance and immune response in piglets during the post-weaning period of the first 3 weeks of life. On the one hand, during the first week post-weaning, the relative abundances of the dominant bacterial families Erysipelotrichaceae (P < 0.01) and Lachnospiraceae (P < 0.01) were increased, which induced decreases in both butyrate production (P < 0.05) and its receptor (G-protein coupled receptor 43) expression (P < 0.01). The resulting intestinal inflammation (inferred from increased TNF-α and IFN-γ expression) contributed to the onset of cell apoptosis and the inhibition of cell-proliferation along the crypt-villus axis, which were followed by impaired jejunal morphology (i.e., increased crypt-depth) (P < 0.05) and intestinal dysfunction (i.e., decreased creatine kinase, and lactate dehydrogenase) (P < 0.05). On the other hand, during the second week post-weaning, the relative abundances of Lactobacillaceae (P < 0.01) and Ruminococcaceae (P < 0.05) were increased. The increases were accompanied by increased butyrate production (P < 0.05) and its receptor expression (P < 0.01), leading to the inhibition of cell apoptosis and the stimulation of cell proliferation via decreased pro-inflammatory cytokines and thereby the improvement of intestinal development and function. Herein, this study demonstrates that microbial-driven butyrate might be a key modulator in the maintenance of intestinal homeostasis after weaning. The findings suggest that strategies to promote butyrate production can maintain the apoptosis/proliferation balance via minimizing intestinal inflammation, and thereby improving post-weaning jejunal adaptation toward gut health

Climatic warming in China during 1901-2015 based on an extended dataset of instrumental temperature records
Monthly mean instrumental surface air temperature (SAT) observations back to the nineteenth century in China are synthesized from different sources via specific quality-control, interpolation, and homogenization. Compared with the first homogenized long-term SAT dataset for China by Cao et al. (2013), which contained 18 stations mainly located in the middle and eastern part of China, the present dataset includes homogenized monthly SAT series at 32 stations, with an extended coverage especially towards western China. Missing values are interpolated by using observations at nearby stations including those from neighboring countries. Cross validation shows that the mean bias error (MBE) is generally small and falls between 0.45°C and -0.35°C. Multiple homogenization methods and available metadata are applied to assess the consistency of the time series and to adjust inhomogeneity biases. The homogenized annual mean SAT series show a range of trends between 1.1 and 4.0°C/century in northeastern China, between 0.4 and 1.9°C/century in southeastern China, and between 1.4 and 3.7°C/century in western China to the west of 105E (from the beginning years of the stations to 2015). The unadjusted data include unusually warm records during the 1940s and hence tend to underestimate the warming trends at a number of stations. The mean SAT series for China based on the Climate Anomaly Method shows a warming trend of 1.56°C/century during 1901-2015, larger than those based on other currently available datasets
Aerosol vertical distribution and optical properties over China from long-term satellite and ground-based remote sensing
The seasonal and spatial variations of vertical distribution and optical properties of aerosols over China are studied using long-term satellite observations from the CloudâAerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) and ground-based lidar observations and Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) data. The CALIOP products are validated using the ground-based lidar measurements at the Semi-Arid Climate and Environment Observatory of Lanzhou University (SACOL). The Taklamakan Desert and Tibetan Plateau regions exhibit the highest depolarization and color ratios because of the natural dust origin, whereas the North China Plain, Sichuan Basin and Yangtze River Delta show the lowest depolarization and color ratios because of aerosols from secondary formation of the anthropogenic origin. Certain regions, such as the North China Plain in spring and the Loess Plateau in winter, show intermediate depolarization and color ratios because of mixed dust and anthropogenic aerosols. In the Pearl River Delta region, the depolarization and color ratios are similar to but higher than those of the other polluted regions because of combined anthropogenic and marine aerosols. Long-range transport of dust in the middle and upper troposphere in spring is well captured by the CALIOP observations. The seasonal variations in the aerosol vertical distributions reveal efficient transport of aerosols from the atmospheric boundary layer to the free troposphere because of summertime convective mixing. The aerosol extinction lapse rates in autumn and winter are more positive than those in spring and summer, indicating trapped aerosols within the boundary layer because of stabler meteorological conditions. More than 80âŻ% of the column aerosols are distributed within 1.5âŻkm above the ground in winter, when the aerosol extinction lapse rate exhibits a maximum seasonal average in all study regions except for the Tibetan Plateau. The aerosol extinction lapse rates in the polluted regions are higher than those of the less polluted regions, indicating a stabilized atmosphere due to absorptive aerosols in the polluted regions. Our results reveal that the satellite and ground-based remote-sensing measurements provide the key information on the long-term seasonal and spatial variations in the aerosol vertical distribution and optical properties, regional aerosol types, long-range transport and atmospheric stability, which can be utilized to more precisely assess the direct and indirect aerosol effects on weather and climate
