High power coupled CO2 waveguide laser array
A hollow-bore ridge waveguide technique for phase locking arrays of coupled CO2 rf excited waveguide lasers was demonstrated. Stable phase-locked operation of two- and three-channel arrays has been demonstrated at the 50 W output level. Preliminary experiments with a five-element array generated an output power of 95 W but phase-locked operation was not conclusively demonstrated
Quadruped Gait Learning Using Cyclic Genetic Algorithms
Generating walking gaits for legged robots is a challenging task. Gait generation with proper leg coordination involves a series of actions that are continually repeated to create sustained movement. In this paper we present the use of a Cyclic Genetic Algorithm (CGA) to learn gaits for a quadruped servo robot with three degrees of movement per leg. An actual robot was used to generate a simulation model of the movement and states of the robot. The CGA used the robot\u27s unique features and capabilities to develop gaits specific for that particular robot. Tests done in simulation show the success of the CGA in evolving a reasonable control program and preliminary tests on the robot show that the resultant control program produces a suitable gait
Enhanced Integrin α4β1-Mediated Adhesion Contributes to a Mobilization Defect of Endothelial Progenitor Cells in Diabetes.
Diabetes is associated with a deficit of circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), which has been attributed to their defective mobilization from the bone marrow. The basis for this mobilization defect is not completely understood, and we sought to determine if hyperglycemic conditions enhanced EPC adhesion. We found that culturing EPCs in high glucose media increased adhesion to bone marrow stromal cells. This enhanced adhesion was associated with decreased expression of protein kinase A regulatory subunit 1β (PRKAR1β), activation of protein kinase A (PKA), and phosphorylation of α4-integrin on serine 988. This potentiated adhesion was reversed by treatment with a PKA inhibitor, overexpression of PRKAR1β, or expression of a phosphorylation-defective α4-integrin variant (α4[S988A]). Using a model of type 1 diabetes, we showed that α4(S988A)-expressing mice have more circulating EPCs than their wild-type counterparts. Moreover, diabetic α4(S988A) mice demonstrate enhanced revascularization after hind limb ischemia. Thus, we have identified a novel signaling mechanism activating PKA in diabetes (downregulation of an inhibitory regulatory subunit) that leads to deficits of circulating EPCs and impaired vascular repair, which could be reversed by α4-integrin mutation
The Effects of Stacking on the Configurations and Elasticity of Single Stranded Nucleic Acids
Stacking interactions in single stranded nucleic acids give rise to
configurations of an annealed rod-coil multiblock copolymer. Theoretical
analysis identifies the resulting signatures for long homopolynucleotides: A
non monotonous dependence of size on temperature, corresponding effects on
cyclization and a plateau in the extension force law. Explicit numerical

A variational principle for stationary, axisymmetric solutions of Einstein's equations
Stationary, axisymmetric, vacuum, solutions of Einstein's equations are
obtained as critical points of the total mass among all axisymmetric and
symmetric initial data with fixed angular momentum. In this
variational principle the mass is written as a positive definite integral over
a spacelike hypersurface. It is also proved that if absolute minimum exists
then it is equal to the absolute minimum of the mass among all maximal,
axisymmetric, vacuum, initial data with fixed angular momentum. Arguments are
given to support the conjecture that this minimum exists and is the extreme

The binary black-hole problem at the third post-Newtonian approximation in the orbital motion: Static part
Post-Newtonian expansions of the Brill-Lindquist and Misner-Lindquist
solutions of the time-symmetric two-black-hole initial value problem are
derived. The static Hamiltonians related to the expanded solutions, after
identifying the bare masses in both solutions, are found to differ from each
other at the third post-Newtonian approximation. By shifting the position
variables of the black holes the post-Newtonian expansions of the three metrics
can be made to coincide up to the fifth post-Newtonian order resulting in
identical static Hamiltonians up the third post-Newtonian approximation. The
calculations shed light on previously performed binary point-mass calculations

Mast cell clones: a model for the analysis of cellular maturation.
Cloned mouse mast cells resemble, by ultrastructure, immature mast cells observed in vivo. These mast cell clones can be grown in the absence of any other cells, facilitating direct investigations of their biochemistry and function. We find that cloned mast cells express plasma membrane receptors (Fc epsilon R) that bind mouse IgE with an equilibrium constant (KA) similar to that of normal mouse peritoneal mast cells. In addition, cloned mast cells do not display detectable la antigens and cannot enhance lg secretion when added to lymphocyte cultures or mediate natural killer lysis. In the presence of 1 mM sodium butyrate, cloned mast cells stop dividing and acquire abundant electron-dense cytoplasmic granules similar to those of mature mast cells. Their histamine content increases concomitant with cytoplasmic granule maturation and may exceed that of untreated mast cells by 50-fold. Unlike peritoneal mast cells, cloned mast cells incorporate 35SO4 into chondroitin sulfates rather than heparin. These findings demonstrate that, unlike fully differentiated mouse peritoneal mast cells, cloned immature mouse mast cells contain no heparin and low levels of histamine. In addition, they establish that high-affinity Fc epsilon R are expressed early in mast cell maturation, well before completion of cytoplasmic granule synthesis and mediator storage
A Comparison of Measured and Self-Reported Blood Pressure Status among Low-Income Housing Residents in New York City
Self-report is widely used to measure hypertension prevalence in population-based studies, but there is little research comparing self-report with measured blood pressure among low-income populations. The objective of this study was to compare self-reported and measured blood pressure status among a sample of low-income housing residents in New York City (n=118). We completed a cross-sectional analysis comparing self-report with measured blood pressure status. We determined the sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value (PPV) of each self-report metric. Of the sample, 68.1% was Black, 71.1% had a household income under $25,000/year, and 28.5% did not complete high school. In our study, there was a discrepancy in the prevalence hypertension by self-report (30.5%) versus measurement (39.8%). PPV of self-report was 94.4%. Specificity was 97.2%. Hypertension awareness (sensitivity) was 72.3%. Of individuals not reporting hypertension, 15.9% had measurements in the hypertensive range and 43.9% had measurements in the borderline hypertensive range. Our findings suggest that self-reported and objective measures of hypertension are incongruent among low-income housing residents and may have important implications for population-based research among low-income populations
"Doubled" generalized Landau-Lifshiz hierarchies and special quasigraded Lie algebras
Using special quasigraded Lie algebras we obtain new hierarchies of
integrable nonlinear vector equations admitting zero-curvature representations.
Among them the most interesting is extension of the generalized Landau-Lifshitz
hierarchy which we call "doubled" generalized Landau-Lifshiz hierarchy. This
hierarchy can be also interpreted as an anisotropic vector generalization of
"modified" Sine-Gordon hierarchy or as a very special vector generalization of
