    Congenital vulvar teratoma in a newborn

Herein the authors describe a congenital teratoma, and to their knowledge it is the first reported case of vulvar site in a newborn. Tumor was removed on the fourth day of life, and she was completely normal 18 months after the operation. Because of possible malignancy or recurrence, complete surgical excision of the tumor and the careful follow-up is the treatment of choice. Copyright (C) 2001 by W.B. Saunders Company

    The acute effects of cold, CO2 containing forearm water both on skin microcirculation and pain thresholds

    Purpose: The study was arranged to investigate the immediate effects of high concentrated CO2 containing cold water bath on the microcirculation of the skin, on the pain thresholds (pressure, heat, cold) and on the local subjective heat sensitivity and the thermal comfort perception. Material and method: 17 healthy male subjects got unilateral forearm baths with mineral water containing 3500 mg/l CO2 and with tap water respectively. Both baths were carried out at a temperature of 18-19degreesC and the duration of the baths was 16 minutes. Results: During the application Of CO2 bath, a 2 fold increase in the skin microcirculation values was measured via Laser Doppler Flowmetry in comparison with the initial values. However, during tap water bath application, skin blood flow values were decreased 50%. The difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Furthermore the subjects mentioned that they felt warmer (p < 0.05) and more comfortable (p < 0.01) with CO2 containing water bath. But despite the improvement in the values there were not any statistically significant differences between the baths for the pressure pain threshold (+16.7%; p<0.01), the cold pain threshold (-41.6%; p < 0.05) and the heat pain threshold (+2.5%, n.s.). Conclusion: Our findings indicate that CO2 containing cold water bath is more effective in increasing the skin microcirculation, inhibiting the cold dependent vasoconstriction and leading to a warm and more comfortable subjective sensation in comparison with tap water. The analgesic effects were similar for both baths

    Alternative postharvest treatments to control decay of table grapes during storage

    The aim of this study is to determine efficacy of some alternative postharvest treatments to sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) in maintaining quality and reducing fungal decay during cold storage of table grapes. The table grapes cv. Pafi was subjected to the following treatments after harvest: (1) Hot water dips at 24 °C, 45 °C, 50 °C or 55 °C for 3 min followed by packaging in perforated polyethylene (PPE) bags; (2) Packaging with ethanol vapor generating sachets of Antimold (R) 30 or Antimold (R) 60 in PPE bags; (3) Packaging with SO2 generating pad in PPE bags; (4) Packaging in PPE bags. Berries were stored at 0 °C for 3 months. Antimold (R) 60 sachet was more effective in reducing fungal decay than control and the SO(2) generating pad treatment without adverse effect on quality parameters during 3 months of cold storage. Stem browning occurred at slightly higher level in grapes dipped in hot water or packaged with Antimold®30 sachet and might limit their use, despite providing effective control of fungal decay

    Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) Polymorphisms in Pediatric Patients Presenting With Hodgkin's Lymphoma

    Vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphisms are found more commonly in some tumor types than in healthy individuals, suggesting that some polymorphisms (Cdx2, Fok1, Bsm1, Apa1, Taq1) contribute to tumor development. There is no previous report on VDR polymorphism in Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) patients. VDR polymorphism patterns in 95 pediatric HL cases with 100 healthy controls were compared. No statistically significant difference was found between the patient group and control group in terms of Cdx2, Fok1, Bsm1, Apa1, and Taq1 polymorphisms (P > 0.5). Our findings suggest that VDR polymorphisms may not play a role in HL development
