A Tale of Three Cities: Crime and Displacement after Hurricane Katrina
When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in August 2005, it greatly disrupted both the physical and social structures of that community. One consequence of the hurricane was the displacement of large numbers of New Orleans residents to other cities, including Houston, San Antonio, and Phoenix. There has been media speculation that such a grand-scale population displacement led to increased crime in communities that were recipient of large numbers of displaced New Orleans residents. This study was a case study of three cities with somewhat different experiences with Katrina\u27s diaspora. Time series analysis was used to examine the pre- and post-Katrina trends in six Part I offenses (murder, robbery, aggravated assault, rape, burglary, and auto theft) to assess any impact of such large-scale population shifts on crime in host communities. Biological control of tephritid fruit flies in the Americas and Hawaii: A review of the use of parasitoids and predators
Biological control has been the most commonly researched control tactic within fruit fly management programs. For the first time, a review is carried out covering parasitoids and predators of fruit flies (Tephritidae) from the Americas and Hawaii, presenting the main biological control programs in this region. In this work, 31 species of fruit flies of economic importance are considered in the genera Anastrepha (11), Rhagoletis (14), Bactrocera (4), Ceratitis (1), and Zeugodacus (1). In this study, a total of 79 parasitoid species of fruit flies of economic importance are listed and, from these, 50 are native and 29 are introduced. Role of IL-36 Cytokines in the Regulation of Angiogenesis Potential of Trophoblast Cells
IL-36 cytokines (the agonists IL-36α, IL-36β, IL-36γ, and the antagonist IL-36Ra) are expressed in the mouse uterus and associated with maternal immune response during pregnancy. Here, we characterize the expression of IL-36 members in human primary trophoblast cells (PTC) and trophoblastic cell lines (HTR-8/SVneo and JEG-3) and upon treatment with bacterial and viral components. Effects of recombinant IL-36 on the migration capacity of trophoblastic cells, their ability to interact with endothelial cells and the induction of angiogenic factors and miRNAs (angiomiRNAs) were examined. Constitutive protein expression of IL-36 (α, β, and γ) and their receptor (IL-36R) was found in all cell types. In PTC, transcripts for all IL-36 subtypes were found, whereas in trophoblastic cell lines only for IL36G and IL36RN. A synthetic analog of double-stranded RNA (poly I:C) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced the expression of IL-36 members in a cell-specific and time-dependent manner. In HTR-8/SVneo cells, IL-36 cytokines increased cell migration and their capacity to interact with endothelial cells. VEGFA and PGF mRNA and protein, as well as the angiomiRNAs miR-146a-3p and miR-141-5p were upregulated as IL-36 response in PTC and HTR-8/SVneo cells. In conclusion, IL-36 cytokines are modulated by microbial components and regulate trophoblast migration and interaction with endothelial cells. Total or partial replacement of fishmeal with soybean meal in the diet of the Pacific fat sleeper Dormitator latifrons juveniles
Groups of Dormitator latifrons in triplicate (4.1 ± 2.0 g and 6.2 ± 1.0 cm) were fed experimental diets containing four levels of substitution of fishmeal (FM) by soybean meal (SM) (0, 40, 70, and 100%, respectively). The diets were formulated to be isoproteic (35% crude protein) and isolipidic (8.0% crude lipids). The effect of each treatment on growth was evaluated and its implications on the cost of feeding. After 60 days of feeding, there were no significant differences in the fish's proximate composition (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences between the diets (P < 0.05) in the evaluated biological indices: total growth increase (TGI), specific growth rate (SGR), thermal growth coefficient (TGC), and survival (%). Feeding costs decreased significantly as the proportion of soybean meal in the diet increased. The results indicated that substituting FM by up to 100% of SM can promote adequate growth in D. latifrons without affecting body composition and survival while also reducing operative costs during the fattening process.Fil: Badillo Zapata, Daniel. Engineering simulations of a super-complex cultural heritage building: Ica Cathedral in Peru
The Cathedral of Ica, Peru, is one of the four prototype buildings involved in the ongoing Seismic Retrofitting Project, initiative of the Getty Conservation Institute. The complex historical building, which was heavily damaged by earthquakes in 2007 and 2009, can be divided into two substructures: an external masonry envelope and an internal timber frame built by a construction method known as quincha technique. This study makes use of the information available in literature and the results obtained from experimental campaigns performed by Pontificia Universidad Catlica del PerA and University of Minho. Nonlinear behaviour of masonry is simulated in the numerical models by considering specified compressive and tensile softening behaviour, while isotropic homogeneous and linear behaviour is adopted for modelling timber with appropriate assumptions on the connections. A single representative bay was initially studied by performing linear elastic analysis and verifying the compliance with the various criteria specified by the applicable normative to discuss the actual failure of Ica Cathedral. Afterwards, the structural behaviour of the two substructures composing the Cathedral is evaluated independently. Finally, the interaction of these two substructures is investigated by performing structural analysis on the entire structure of Ica Cathedral. Several structural analysis techniques, including eigenvalue, nonlinear static and dynamic analyses, are performed in order to: (1) evaluate the dominant mode shapes of the structure; (2) validate the numerical models by reproducing the structural damage observed in situ; (3) estimate the structural performance; and (4) identify the main failure mechanisms.This work was carried out with funding from the Getty Seismic Retrofitting Project under the auspices of the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI). Metformin Activates an Atypical PKC-CBP Pathway to Promote Neurogenesis and Enhance Spatial Memory Formation
SummaryAlthough endogenous recruitment of adult neural stem cells has been proposed as a therapeutic strategy, clinical approaches for achieving this are lacking. Here, we show that metformin, a widely used drug, promotes neurogenesis and enhances spatial memory formation. Specifically, we show that an atypical PKC-CBP pathway is essential for the normal genesis of neurons from neural precursors and that metformin activates this pathway to promote rodent and human neurogenesis in culture. Metformin also enhances neurogenesis in the adult mouse brain in a CBP-dependent fashion, and in so doing enhances spatial reversal learning in the water maze. Thus, metformin, by activating an aPKC-CBP pathway, recruits neural stem cells and enhances neural function, thereby providing a candidate pharmacological approach for nervous system therapy.Video Abstrac
ABANDONO DE LA LACTANCIA MATERNA EXCLUSIVA EN MADRES INMIGRANTES RESIDENTES EN TALCA
Main objective: to find out the dimensions related to the abandonment of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) before 6 months of life of the infant.
Method: qualitative study with a theoretical-methodological approach based on symbolic interactionism using semi-structured in-depth interviews with a sample of case-types of ten migrant users who discontinued exclusive breastfeeding before 6 months of life of their newborn, residents of the Maule Region. We also incorporated the views of three midwives, one nutritionist and one nurse currently working in Municipal Family Health Center (CESFAM) in the commune of Talca, Chile. The sample was selected according to general criteria (people capable of providing a cognitive, evaluative and behavioural response) and specific criteria. Content analysis was carried out using grounded theory tools. The reliability of this study was based on empirical saturation and triangulation by researcher. Approval by the Scientific Ethics Committee of the University of Talca N°042023.
Main results: the dimensions related to the abandonment of EBF in inmigrants are: breastfeeding culture, breastfeeding history and work. The interviewees perceive health care in Chile as empathetic, positive and attentive.
Conclusions: work is the most representative motif among the main ones related to the abandonment of EBF, job instability and the need to remain economically active impacts negatively the breastfeeding process.Objetivo principal: conocer las dimensiones relacionadas con el abandono de la lactancia materna exclusiva (LME) antes de los seis meses de vida del lactante.
Método: estudio cualitativo, con enfoque teórico metodológico orientado desde la perspectiva del interaccionismo simbólico que aplica entrevistas en profundidad semiestructuradas, con una muestra de casos-tipos, a diez usuarias inmigrantes que residen en la Región del Maule que suspendieron la LME antes de los seis meses de vida de su recién nacido. Para la triangulación de datos se incorporó la visión de tres matronas, una nutricionista y una enfermera que trabajan actualmente en Centros de Salud Familiar Municipal (CESFAM) de la comuna de Talca, Chile. Criterios para selección de la muestra: generales (personas capaces de entregar una respuesta cognitiva, evaluativa y conductual) y específicos. Análisis de contenido con herramientas de la teoría fundamentada. La confiabilidad se resguardó con la saturación empírica y la triangulación por investigador. Aprobación por el Comité de Ética científica de la Universidad de Talca N°042023.
Principales resultados: las dimensiones relacionadas al abandono de la LME en inmigrantes fueron: cultura de lactancia, historia de lactancia y trabajo. Las entrevistadas perciben la atención de salud en Chile como empática, positiva y atenta.
Conclusiones: el trabajo es el principal motivo relacionado al abandono de la LME, la inestabilidad laboral y la necesidad de permanecer económicamente activa impacta negativamente el proceso de amamantamiento
Biology and use of the Pacific fat sleeper Dormitator latifrons (Richardson, 1844): state of the art review
The present work is a review of the literature on the native Mexican fish Dormitator latifrons. The aim is to contribute to the integration and systematization of current knowledge to make it easier to identify existing knowledge gaps and breakthroghs Moreover, promote the successful cultivation and protection of this species whose consumption is increasing in Latin America. A review of the articles related to D. latifrons published in international and regional databases was carried out. The articles reviewed focus on taxonomy and systematics, phylogenetic, geographic distribution, ecology, physiology, reproduction, development, pathology, health, and the technologies used to cultivate this fish species. The conclusion is that, even though the cultivation of D. latifrons is of commercial interest in some countries, there are still significant gaps in our knowledge of biology and, consequently, the domestication potential of the species. Filling these gaps will require systematic research efforts on protecting natural populations and improving mass cultivation techniques.Fil: Vega Villasante, Fernando.
