    Instability and Periodic Deformation in Bilayer Membranes Induced by Freezing

    The instability and periodic deformation of bilayer membranes during freezing processes are studied as a function of the difference of the shape energy between the high and the low temperature membrane states. It is shown that there exists a threshold stability condition, bellow which a planar configuration will be deformed. Among the deformed shapes, the periodic curved square textures are shown being one kind of the solutions of the associated shape equation. In consistency with recent expe rimental observations, the optimal ratio of period and amplitude for such a texture is found to be approximately equal to (2)^{1/2}\pi.Comment: 8 pages in Latex form, 1 Postscript figure.     Comparison of Different Methods for the Calculation of the Microvascular Flow Index

    The microvascular flow index (MFI) is commonly used to semiquantitatively characterize the velocity of microcirculatory perfusion as absent (0), intermittent (1), sluggish (2), or normal (3). There are three approaches to compute MFI: (1) the average of the predominant flow in each of the four quadrants (MFIby quadrants), (2) the direct assessment during the bedside video acquisition (MFIpoint of care), and (3) the mean value of the MFIs determined in each individual vessel (MFIvessel by vessel). We hypothesized that the agreement between the MFIs is poor and that the MFIvessel by vessel better reflects the microvascular perfusion. For this purpose, we analyzed 100 videos from septic patients. In 25 of them, red blood cell (RBC) velocity was also measured. There were wide 95% limits of agreement between MFIby quadrants and MFIpoint of care (1.46), between MFIby quadrants and MFIvessel by vessel (2.85), and between MFIby point of care and MFIvessel by vessel (2.56). The MFIs significantly correlated with the RBC velocity and with the fraction of perfused small vessels, but MFIvessel by vessel showed the best R2. Although the different methods for the calculation of MFI reflect microvascular perfusion, they are not interchangeable and MFIvessel by vessel might be better

    Magnetoresistive detection of perpendicular switching in a magnetic insulator

    Spintronics offers promising routes for efficient memory, logic, and computing technologies. The central challenge in spintronics is electrically manipulating and detecting magnetic states in devices. The electrical control of magnetization via spin-orbit torques is effective in both conducting and insulating magnetic layers. However, the electrical readout of magnetization in the latter is inherently difficult, limiting its use in practical applications. Here, we demonstrate magnetoresistive detection of perpendicular magnetization reversal in an electrically insulating ferrimagnet, terbium iron garnet (TbIG). To do so, we use TbIG|Cu|TbCo, where TbCo is a conducting ferrimagnet and serves as the reference layer, and Cu is a nonmagnetic spacer. Current injection through Cu|TbCo allows us to detect the magnetization reversal of TbIG with a simple resistance readout during an external magnetic field sweep. By examining the effect of measurement temperature, TbCo composition, and Cu thickness on the sign and amplitude of the magnetoresistance, we conclude that the spin-dependent electron scattering at the TbIG|Cu interface is the underlying cause. Technologically-feasible magnetoresistive detection of perpendicular switching in a ferrimagnetic garnet is a breakthrough, as it opens broad avenues for novel insulating spintronic devices and concepts

    Topic detection and tracking (TDT) applications aim to organize the temporally ordered stories of a news stream according to the events. Two major problems in TDT are new event detection (NED) and topic tracking (TT). These problems focus on finding the first stories of new events and identifying all subsequent stories on a certain topic defined by a small number of sample stories. In this work, we introduce the first large-scale TDT test collection for Turkish, and investigate the NED and TT problems in this language. We present our test-collection-construction approach, which is inspired by the TDT research initiative. We show that in TDT for Turkish with some similarity measures, a simple word truncation stemming method can compete with a lemmatizer-based stemming approach. Our findings show that contrary to our earlier observations on Turkish information retrieval, in NED word stopping has an impact on effectiveness. We demonstrate that the confidence scores of two different similarity measures can be combined in a straightforward manner for higher effectiveness. The influence of several similarity measures on effectiveness also is investigated. We show that it is possible to deploy TT applications in Turkish that can be used in operational settings. © 2010 ASIS&T

    Non-spherical shapes of capsules within a fourth-order curvature model

    We minimize a discrete version of the fourth-order curvature based Landau free energy by extending Brakke's Surface Evolver. This model predicts spherical as well as non-spherical shapes with dimples, bumps and ridges to be the energy minimizers. Our results suggest that the buckling and faceting transitions, usually associated with crystalline matter, can also be an intrinsic property of non-crystalline membranes.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures (LaTeX macros EPJ), accepted for publication in EPJ

    Successful Reduction of Creatine Kinase and Myoglobin Levels in Severe Rhabdomyolysis Using Extracorporeal Blood Purification (CytoSorb®)

    Rhabdomyolysis, if severe, can lead to acute kidney injury (AKI). Myoglobin is an iron and oxygen-binding protein that is freely filtered by the glomerulus. Precipitation of myoglobin in the nephrons' distal parts is responsible for tubular damage with AKI as a consequence. Extracorporeal clearance of myoglobin is conventionally attempted by the use of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) with high cut-off dialysis membranes to limit the extent of the damage. We describe a case of a 56-year-old man with traumatic crush injury and a persistent source of muscle ischaemia unresponsive to high dose CRRT with EMiC-2 filter. Due to therapy failure, he was subsequently treated with the addition of a haemoadsorber (CytoSorb®) to the circuit. This reduced myoglobin and creatine kinase

    Coil Formation in Multishell Carbon Nanotubes: Competition between Curvature Elasticity and Interlayer Adhesion

    To study the shape formation process of carbon nanotubes, a string equation describing the possible existing shapes of the axis-curve of multishell carbon tubes (MCTs) is obtained in the continuum limit by minimizing the shape energy, that is the difference between the MCT energy and the energy of the carbonaceous mesophase (CM). It is shown that there exists a threshold relation of the outmost and inmost radii, that gives a parameter regime in which a straight MCT will be bent or twisted. Among the deformed shapes, the regular coiled MCTs are shown being one of the solutions of the string equation. In particular,the optimal ratio of pitch pp and radius r0r_0 for such a coil is found to be equal to 2Ď€2\pi , which is in good agreement with recent observation of coil formation in MCTs by Zhang et al.Comment: RevTeX, no figure, 12 pages, to appear in Phys.
